Coming down off the Halloween high (don’t you just love chocolate?), I find myself heading straight towards a turkey. I mean a literal turkey, thankfully devoid of feathers. Preparing this tra-ditional feast has me poring over books looking for something familiar with a twist to add a little excitement to the meal. My sister has always declared this her very favorite holiday—just food, family, friends and did I mention food? Really, she’s got a point. When else do we sit down, take stock of our lives with no commercial expectations and simply give thanks.
At Fernwood we have so much for which to be grateful: successful fall fundraising (congratulations Tamara and Karin), art in the classroom (good work docents and Carmen), box-tops by the bucket (whoo-hoo, Mary), a library continually stocked with books (thank you volun-teers and Gini), and directories to contact friends (good work, Andrea).
Now we have such a great lead-in to our holidays with our spaghetti feed dinner. Thank you Shannon, Tammy and Becky for organizing this event and encouraging us to further build our community. November is also the time we salute our veterans. Thank you to all who choose to wear a uniform keeping our local communities and the whole of our country a bastion of hope, freedom and opportunity.
Looking ahead, we have the book fair masterfully planned by Pam, Gini and Pravina. We are so excited to add books to our home libraries, class libraries and subsequently the Fernwood library. While we’re looking ahead, please make sure to mark your calendars for Bingo on 25 January 2013 (whoa, are we that close to the new year!) where I’m sure Jen, Karin and Kari will give us an evening to remember.

Volunteering at school is a great way to get involved and allows us to provide fun and memorable experiences for our children. Any amount of time you can contribute is appreciated. Wondering what to do over the break?
Here are some science suggestions…
Learn about skyscrapers and build your own
out of Legos or other materials.
Start a leaf collection. Sort them by color, size,
edges, veins, etc.
Visit the Seattle Aquarium and learn about sea
life.
Learn about nutrition with the My Plate.gov and plan and make dinner.
Use ink & paper to make fingerprints. Compare with a friend.
Visit the Brightwater Education Center and learn about water quality
(Tour reservation online: Open 10-4)
Experiment with building paper airplanes and test how well they fly.

Thanks to everyone, teachers included, for a great first fundraiser!!! We sold about $30,000 in cookie
dough, which means Fernwood makes about $18,000!!! That is amazing!
Please remember, cookie dough pick up will be
on Wednesday, November 7 starting at about 2:30-4:00pm. ALL ORDERS MUST BE PICKED UP THAT DAY!!! You will be receiving a reminder and we
are looking for volunteers that day!!!
We are now into Entertainment books full swing! The kids have until November 7th to sell books. The orders will be coming home starting conference week. Remember the kids have two
chances to go in the money machine if they sell 8 books by October 30th and another 8 by November
7th! The money Machine dates are October 31st and November 14th, both at lunch time.
Remember that all the fundraising we do with
these two drives goes towards, art docent, teacher grants, field trips, science fair, and a whole lot of
other things that would be possible for out PTSA to do with our school if we didn’t have this money.

Parent donations are vital to the success of Fernwood’s upcoming auction
A committee of volunteers is working hard to make Fernwood’s March 23 auction a memorable event, but there’s
one critical factor to the auction’s success that is out of their control: donations from Fernwood families. While
some private schools require all enrolled students to make donations of items worth hundreds of dollars,
Fernwood’s auction is dependent on the generosity and creativity of the local community.
So how can you help?
The most pressing need at this time is for big-ticket items like vacation packages. If you have a vacation home or
timeshare that you are willing to open up for a specified period of time, please contact Sarah Fujita at
[email protected]. You can also purchase tickets at http://www.fernwoodelementary.schoolauction.net/
auction2013 .
Also important – and easy for anyone to donate -- are creative experience packages and gift baskets. If you have
never been to a school auction before and aren’t sure what donations might be appropriate, or if you’re just
stumped for ideas about what you might be able to donate, we have a few suggestions for you.
Food-Related Packages
You don’t need to be a master chef to donate a food-related experience or basket – just one specialty meal is all it
takes. For example, you can offer to prepare a full Theme Meal for a set number of people, either catering it at the
buyer’s house or hosting it in your own home. This would also be a great donation for two people or a group to
make together, with one person providing the location and the others purchasing the ingredients and doing the
cooking.
The meal doesn’t need to be high-end gourmet. Who wouldn’t want to plan a fun get-together with friends with
someone else providing the food and drinks? Possible meal
themes include:
Italian
Mexican
Indian
Ethiopian
Fondue
Pizza
Chili
Summer Barbecue/Pool Party
Cocktails and Appetizers
Ice Cream Sundaes

with friends, delivering a different goody to the recipient once a month for a year or for the coming school year.
Potential treat themes include:
Cookies (for example, three dozen cookies a month, with a different flavor each time)
Cakes/Cupcakes (one different cake or a dozen cupcakes each month)
Pies
Breads
Jams, Jellies and Preserves
Another idea for food-related donations is to put together a Theme Basket with your favorite foods, cooking
supplies and/or accessories. Here are just a few examples:
Mexican Fiesta: margarita glasses, a tortilla warmer, a chip-and-dip tray, margarita mix, tequila, tortilla chips, an
assortment of salsas, Mexican spices, etc.
Wine and Cheese Party: wine glasses, a decanter, a nice corkscrew, a cheese platter and cheese cutter, and an
assortment of wines.
Coffee Lovers: ground coffee, mugs, coffee gift cards, and a coffee-maker or espresso machine.
Baker’s Basket: cookie sheets, cake pans, mixing spoons and spreaders, cake and cookie mixes, canned frosting,
bags of chocolate chips and other stir-ins, and assorted sprinkles and cake decorations.
Experience Packages
So maybe cooking just isn’t your passion. Everyone has some area of expertise, and yours can be the basis of a
fantastic auction item. Just offer up your services or provide a learning experience for one or more people. Need
some ideas? Consider these:
Many of these experiences can also be presented as Theme Baskets. For example, instead of hosting a scrapbooking
party or photography lessons, you can put together a basket of scrapbooking or photography supplies – or donate a
basket of supplies that includes a certificate for a party or lesson.
The possibilities for auction donations are truly endless. If the above suggestions don’t spark your imagination, keep
watching for more ideas in the months to come. If you have questions about donations, don’t hesitate to contact

We need your help . . . and there are several ways you can help including:
1. DONATE ITEMS FOR PRIZES/BINGO GIFT BASKETS -
We need your donations to help make it a successful, fun-filled evening!
Each teacher/classroom will be assigned a theme. We’re requesting that you donate an item or items that match the theme for your child’s class*. The donations will then be assembled into prize baskets for our fun Bingo Night. Starting in November, there will be a collection box in your child’s classroom. In the meantime, keep an eye out for those holiday bargains! We are also collecting baskets or other decorative carry-alls/containers to hold the prizes. Deadline for donations is Friday, January 11th.
*We will also be doing a raffle at the event so if you have something to donate that might not match the theme of your child’s classroom, please feel free to drop it in the main office – there will be a general collection/donation box there in November.
2. VOLUNTEER -
We need volunteers for set up, clean up and for duties during the event..

BINGO THEME DETAILS
ARTS & CRAFTS: Kids’ craft kits, paints and paint brushes, construction paper, fun foam, modeling clay, PlayDoh, glitter, oil pastels, chalk, stamps and ink, scrapbooking papers and embellishments, paper-cutting tools, hole punches, art books, jewelry making kits, color pencils, sketchbooks, charcoal, drawing pencils, framing certificates, etc.
PLAY TIME: The sky is the limit – anything and everything related to play . . . art supplies, indoor and outdoor games, sports equipment, books, crafts, cooking and baking supplies. Gift cards to places like roller and ice skating rinks, bowling, Jump Planet, Chuck E Cheese, etc.
INDOOR PLAY: Books for all ages (plus magazines, bookmarks, bookstore gift cards, reading lights, and toys and collectibles from popular books), dress-up clothes, puppets, sing-along recordings, board games, Legos, educational toys, magic tricks, craft or science kits.
MOVIE NIGHT: All the necessities for a movie night - DVDs, popcorn and seasonings, popcorn bowls, movie-theater candy, video-store gift cards, movie theater gift cards, Netflix membership, pizza gift cards, blankets & pillows, bean bag chairs, etc.
SNACKS & MUNCHIES: Cookies, candy, chocolate, chips, crackers, nuts, popcorn, beef jerky, granola bars, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, beverages, ice cream gift cards, and anything else to cure the munchies! Snack supplies too – popcorn tubs, ice cream bowls, cookie jars, cookie cutters, hot cocoa mugs, gumball machines, etc.
OUTDOOR PLAY: All things you can do outside – all seasons . . . BOTHELL SPIRIT: All things Bothell including spirit gear from Fernwood, Skyview or Bothell High School, plus gift cards or donated items from businesses in Bothell, tickets for things to do in Bothell, etc.
**We are putting together a gift card tree for the grand prize winner of our BLACKOUT game – if you have a gift card you would like to contribute to this we’d appreciate it.

PTA Reflections 2012PTA Reflections 2012--2013 ~ "THE MAGIC OF A MOMENT. . ."2013 ~ "THE MAGIC OF A MOMENT. . ." Dear Students, Parents/Guardians and Teachers: The national Reflections Art Program for the 2012 - 2013 school year is underway. Reflections is a cultural arts program of the National PTA. The program encourages students to express their thoughts and feelings through creative arts. Students produce work at home or school within the context of the given theme in any of the following seven categories: Literature: Poetry, prose, play, short story, or song lyrics Visual Arts: Drawing, painting, coloring, picture collages, computer generated, metal etching or punch work, or fiber work (original needlepoint etc.) Note: 2 dimensional work only Photography: Color or black and white photos up to 11.14 inches including the following techniques: photogram, collage, retouched, montage, computer generated, sandwich and multiple exposures. Musical Composition: An original score with or without lyrics Choreography / Dance: An originally choreographed dance performed on video Film / Video: Fiction or nonfiction video created as an animation, a narrative, a documentary, or a music video
This year’s theme is “THE MAGIC OF A MOMENT…”“THE MAGIC OF A MOMENT…” and means that a student
needs to submit projects based on how he/she interprets it. If interested in participating, please contact the PTSA Reflections chair, Erin Anderson at [email protected] with student's name, grade, teacher and category of interest. Rules for the chosen category (or categories) and official entry form(s) will be given to the student. Each student may submit an entry in each category if they choose. However, only one entry per category is allowed. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, interpretation of the theme, neatness, and composition. The deadline for all entries is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2012 (no exceptions).

Join My Circle!
My name is Brian Johanski. My son, Kieran, is enrolled in the AM Kindergarten session with Ms. Heathman. For the past two years Kieran and I have participated in a program at the Northshore YMCA called “Adventure Guides.” The Adventure Guides is a Father-Child program for kids PreK - 3rd grade and is designed to help foster a lifetime of companionship and strengthen the relationship between fathers and their children (and it’s a LOT OF FUN!). Together we build, play games, learn new skills, and enjoy the great outdoors with other parents and kids. Within the overall program, smaller groups (“Circles”) are created, allowing participants to share similar experiences, build friendship, and enjoy quality one-on-one time. Circles come together to participate in several events throughout the year, including three weekend camp-outs at some of Washington's beautiful summer camps!
Some of the longest lasting friendships begin on the playground in elementary school. I’d like to reinforce these friendships by forming a new Adventure Guides Circle for fathers/children interested in strengthening their relationship and having fun! The Circle would primarily center on Fernwood Elementary Kindergarteners but, of course, is open to others who are interested as well.

Do you have a special talent or skill that you would love to share with our school? Do you like to be well informed about the happenings at Fernwood? Are you looking for a way to get to know the other families at Fernwood? Or, do you want to support the many great things Fernwood does, but don't necessarily want to be physically involved? Either way, you can't beat the experiences that are given to our families when you become a member!
One of the new programs we are implementing this year is geared toward the male figures in our children's lives. The program is called Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) and we are looking for a great Dad or two who has a student here at Fernwood and would like to lead this awesome program!
Some of the great things this new program provides are: Positive male role models for our students, demonstrating by their very presence that education
is important. Improvements and building upon the relationship between the community and our school.
Hundreds of additional "in school" volunteer hours annually for our school. Fellowship with a great group of males who want to have a bigger role within the PTSA and have
ownership in it. Some Dads in the program in other schools have said that "when you get a few Dads/Step-Dads together and they see the positive impact this program provides, the energy is addicting and suddenly you have more Dads than you have days for them to have the opportunity to be a Big Dog!"
