Congratulations to the 2016 Employee of the Year award

recipient, Olga M. Olga is a shift leader in the Meadow Wing program,

and she has been working at PAC for over 9 years. “I am very happy to

be recognized for my hard work, but I was so surprised to be given this

award” she says. Rowena Macaraeg, her supervisor, describes “Olga is

very smart and an incredible leader. She does a great job of managing

the Meadow Wing program during the evening shift. She is caring and

really tries her best to help residents in the most compassionate and

patient manner.” Sue Jordan, Executive Director, announced the

Employee of the Year at the Annual Holiday party in December. “I am

very proud of Olga! She is a quiet but effective leader who takes charge.

She is dependable, hardworking, and thinks of way to do her best work

on the job. A wonderful role model, Olga definitely embodies all the

attributes of an Employee of the Year,” Sue commented.

The Employee of the Year was chosen from all the Employees of

the Month for 2016. Some criteria include being dependable and

hard-working, displaying consistently exceptional quality, integrity

and ethic on the job, demonstrating outstanding customer service, and

exhibiting a positive and professional attitude.

Let’s Get Physical! Is your New Year’s resolution to be more active and to keep

up your physical health? We will be keeping track of resident

attendance in our daily exercise class throughout this month, and

we will reward the resident who attends exercise class, the weekly

walking group, and the fitness room the most times throughout the

month of January with a special Fitness Award in February!

We offer many opportunities for residents to get and to stay fit,

so take advantage of the fitness programs and let’s get physical!

Also join us for our daily indoor walking groups.

Residents are encouraged to continue taking regular walks as part

of a healthy lifestyle. Walking indoors at Palo Alto Commons is a

great way to circumvent the cold weather. Of course, whether

indoors or outdoors, residents should always practice safe walking.

Calculation of the distance walked per lap around our hallways:

1 lap = 1/10 mile 5 laps = 1/2 mile 10 laps = 1 mile

Rafaela P. Congratulations to the January

Employee of the Month, Rafaela P.!

Rafaela is a personal care attendant

in the Assisted Living program, and

she has been working at Palo Alto

Commons for 5 years. “I feel

surprised, because I didn’t think I

would be Employee of the Month,”

she says. Born in Jalisco, Mexico,

Rafaela has lived in the Bay Area for

over 20 years. In her spare time, she

loves being outdoors and in nature—

hiking and going to the beach.

Rafaela also enjoys spending her time off with her husband and

four children. “I really enjoy my job. I love to see the residents

happy to see me each morning and giving me compliments,” she

adds. Charito Amoranto, Rafaela’s supervisor, says “She is very

kind-hearted, hardworking, and really wants to help the residents

and to provide the best care and customer service possible.

Rafaela has a good attitude, and she does her job well.”

We will attend a concert outing to see the California Pops

Orchestra on Sunday, February 12, at the Flint Center at DeAnza

College. The concert is entitled, “Magical Broadway Musical

Hits”. Come enjoy music from the early years of Gershwin and

friends’ toe-tapping song-and-dance extravaganzas to the heart-

warming classic hits of the 50’s and 60’s!

Please sign up by January 23, if you are interested, so that

we can purchase tickets well in advance to accommodate our

resident group. Tickets will cost approximately $45.00 and will be

billed to resident accounts at the time of purchase, so please be

committed to attending if you sign up.

Join us for the 7th Annual Palo Alto Commons Resident

Spelling Bee!!! This special event will take place on Monday,

January 30, at 2:00pm, in the living room. The spelling bee is one of

three “bees” (also, the geography and history bees) we host at Palo

Alto Commons each year. The event is held in a similar manner as

a traditional spelling bee, and all residents are invited to join in the

fun and friendly competition!

If you are interested in participating, please sign up at the

front desk by Friday, January 27, so that we can reserve a spot for

In order to use the pool at the Avant, residents and their

doctors must sign a Pool Agreement and Consent form. You may

obtain this form from Deeann in the activity department.

Palo Alto Commons residents may only use the Avant pool

during the following scheduled programs. Please see Deeann if you

have any questions about this program.

Mondays & Thursdays at 10:25am

Residents attending these classes should meet at the above

indicated time, and we will attend the classes at the Avant together

as a group.


Committee & Other News The monthly residents meeting is a great avenue for

residents to bring up important concerns and new ideas to the PAC

management. The January meeting will take place on Monday,

January 23, at 2:20pm, in the dining room. BE THERE!

The menu committee meets with Sherry each month to

review past menus and plan for future dining menus. This

committee is an unique opportunity for our residents to play a

direct and active role in the menu-planning process in our

community. The January menu committee meeting will take

place on Thursday, January 12, at 3:00pm, in the hobby room.

Additionally, if you would like to talk to a professional about your

dietary and nutritional needs, a registered dietician visits Palo Alto

Commons monthly as well. The dietician will be here on Tuesday,

January 17. Please see Sherry if you would like more information.

The Men’s Lunch will take place on Monday, January 23,

at 12:30pm, in the activity room. All male residents are invited to

the Men’s Lunch!


LUNCH OUTING: Cibo Join us on our January luncheon

outing to Cibo Restaurant in Palo Alto.

Cibo serves up classic American food, such

as yummy sandwiches, salads, chicken/beef/

pork, and other delicious dishes! This

lunch outing will take place on Tuesday,

January 17, at 11:45am. The price of your

lunch (including tax & gratuity) will be billed

to your resident account, so don’t worry

about bringing your wallets or purses! Please

sign up at the front desk if you are interested

in joining us. See Deeann if you would like

to take a look at the menu prior to signing up! If you have

recommendation for future lunch outings, let us know!!
