Dear Friends,

Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated our 25th anniversary, and a great celebration it was! We indulged in looking back not only at ourhistory, but also to our patron Blessed Junipero’s account of walking into this beautiful place, down what is now the Conejo Grade. Weheard once again the story of how Fr. Kidney started our parish with the support and blessing of Msgr. Hughes at St. Mary Magdalen, and the generosity and cooperation of St. John’s Seminary, our next door neighbors. We were reminded that beautiful as it is ourbuilding is not the church: we are! The years have flown by, and while it is pleasant to look back, and healthy to be grateful, we mustalso bear in mind our motto “siempre adelante / always forward.”

We truly stand on the shoulders of giants, those courageous men and women who precede us. We are beneficiaries of their faith, and Icouldn’t help think of it as I read this weekend’s second reading from the letter to the Hebrews

All these1 died in faith. They did not receive what had been promisedbut saw it and greeted it from afar and acknowledged themselves to be strangers and aliens on earth, for those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland.

They were always moving forward, “seeking a homeland”, and so are we. As church, we are companions on the journey, helping eachother on the way. Like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we are

looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and maker is God.

But what about those to whom we are sent every Sunday when we’re dismissed to “go announce the gospel with our lives”? I meanour families and friends and fellow parishioners, yes, but I also mean the rest of Camarillo—those who are “de-churched”, or werenever “churched”, those who don’t even realize that they need the Good News of faith in Jesus Christ because they have a pretty good, pretty comfortable life. It is becoming increasingly clear that our call, our focus, our responsibility as we begin the next 25 years, is togo out and find them! We have something precious, something wonderful to invite them to. We invite them to nothing less thanmembership in the Body of Christ—and the Body is incomplete without them.

The letter to the Hebrews continues:

If they had been thinking of the land from which they had come, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better homeland, a heavenly one.

This idea of going out and finding “the lost” can challenge our idea of who we are, and what Padre Serra Parish is. It pulls us out ofour comfort zone. I love the idea of the Body of Christ complete and whole with all of humanity; but I find the idea of inviting peopleto it a bit unpalatable. Perhaps I need to grow in faith. Hebrews again:

By faith Abraham obeyed . . . he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise.

It sounds as if Abraham’s faith gave him the ability to move outside his comfort zone. Won’t ours do the same for us? What if we putit to the test? There is a lot at stake! Remember that we are reminded in Luke’s gospel today that

Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.

Surely we have been entrusted with much. Let’s be about the business of sharing it!

Siempre Adelante,

Dominic MacAllerDirector of Liturgy and Music

Faith Formation ... Faith Formation ... Building Households of FaithBuilding Households of Faith

Each year we have about 600 children and teens come to church afterschool to make friends, have fun and learn about our Catholic faith. Thisis not just for sacrament preparation; it is for every year from age 3through high school. Church, it is a good thing!

Little Church It all begins here at age 3. Little Church is a loving experience of churchfor our preschool through kindergarten age children. During the 9:00 and11:00 liturgies on Sundays, the children gather to make friends and learnabout God through gospel stories, prayer, songs, crafts and snacks.

First and Second GradeChildren in grades 1 and 2 meet in small groups called Centers, eachwith about 10 children and 2 adults and a teenager. They meet 3 times amonth to learn about and grow in their relationship with Jesus and theirunderstanding of our faith traditions.

Third, Fourth and Fifth GradeThird, fourth and fifth graders meet at the parish about three times amonth to learn about our Catholic faith in a way that fosters fun, fellowship and discipleship with a focus on service to the poor and themeaning of the gospel message in their daily lives.

First CommunionToward the end of the second consecutive year of Faith Formation, children preparing to receive their First Reconciliation and FirstCommunion attend 2 half-day retreats with their parents.

Faith Factor LiveFFL is our junior high youth ministry for 6th through 8th graders. Thesekids have a blast reading scripture, playing, praying, listening to musicand being crazy.

LIFELiving in Faith to the Extreme is our high school youth gathering. Theseteens meet most Monday nights to make connections, share their insightsand concerns, and grow in faith.

Youth ConfirmationThis two-year process for high school teens includes catecheticalsessions, hands-on ministry, large and small group faith sharing, community events, retreats and service experiences that all culminate inreceiving the sacrament.

In the Deanery and BeyondPadre Serra Parish ~ Adult Formation Opportunity“Catholicism” and YouHow has the Catholic faith tradition developed and expanded sincethe time of Jesus? How can we respond to our call to take Christ’slife to all nations as members of the Mystical Body? We will resumein September for Year 2 of our (5) monthly gatherings ofparishioners who are involved in the “Catholicism” program here atPadre Serra.

Each session’s DVD is a beautifullyfilmed overview of important aspects of our faith, and is narrated byFr. Robert Barron. We do have a Study Guide available to preparefor each session and for reference afterward.

We guarantee that you will discover for yourself a deeperappreciation for the beauty and significance of our Catholic faith asyou experience these outstanding presentations and then share yourinsights with others.Questions: Jeanne Gaffney 484-6201 Thank you from Holyland Olivewood

Protectthe Children

Be prepared for an emergencyNo matter how well you childproof your home or try to preventaccidents, one of the best things you can do is prepare yourself for anemergency. To help keep your kids safe, it's smart to learncardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the abdominal thrustprocedure (Heimlich maneuver). It’s helpful to assemble a first aidkit with emergency instructions and to keep important numbers nearyour phone such as poison control office, your pediatrician, yourwork, and a neighbor or nearby relative; and as soon as your child isold enough to know his/her own name and address, teach him or herto dial 9-1-1 to call for help in case of an emergency.
