A Message from Archbishop Gomez:Blessed Junípero is one of my spiritual heroes and a giantfigure in the evangelization of the New World. He is one ofCalifornia’s founders and he is associated with the origins ofLos Angeles and its original name, El Pueblo de Nuestra Señorade Los Ángeles de Porciúncula, “The Town of Our Lady of theAngels of Porciuncula.” Of the nine missions Padre Serrafounded in California, two are located in the Archdiocese of LosAngeles — the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and SanBuenaventura. It’s wonderful to think that this new saint once walked the roadthat is now the Hollywood Freeway and called it El CaminoReal, “The King’s Highway.”I believe Padre Serra’s canonization will help the Church’s newevangelization. It will remind us that our state and our countryand all the Americas, are built on Christian foundations.

Sponsor a TeenDear Friends,
Every year Brett Becker and I take between 100 and 115 highschool teens on an incredible 3-day retreat as part of theirpreparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. The cost is$170. Additionally, we take this same bunch to Youth Day inAnaheim. The day includes bus transportation, a t-shirt (so wedon’t lose anybody!), and event ticket. The cost is $85.
If you would like to sponsor a teen whose family is not in aposition to afford these extra expenses – please make yourdonation payable to Padre Serra Parish, in the memo portionwrite Sponsor a Teen donation.
With joy and gratitude I am able say to a worried parent thattheir parish family has this taken care of this expense for them.I ask them to make a similar donation in the future for anotheryoung person.
Blessings,
Eve CollierFaith Formation Minister

Week 3: Food ~Eat food that loves us back
We are what we eat. Food so powerfullyaffects, positively or negatively, our health, weight, energy, focus, and minds. It’s never toolate to make positive changes. Now is the time!
The commission to come after Jesus and to fishfor men and women requires healthy bodiesand clear minds. Can we connect our diet andexercise to Jesus’ mission to build up thekingdom?

Wholiness Plan: Food ~ Eating food that loves us back
As I suspected, my Wellness Survey revealed food as an area to focus my attention and set goals. Foodhas always been a struggle for me, whether it’s for emotional comfort, celebration or convenience.Since having my children (my youngest is 16), I’ve ridden the roller coaster of weight loss and gain. But as I have gotten older, I am not as concerned only with the numbers on the scale as I am with thenumbers related to cholesterol, sugar, sodium, etc. Now I worry more about issues like blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, and dementia and understand the importance of making real changes, today. Thisrequires a lot of faith, friends, and especially fortitude.
Our readings today also reflect a sense of urgency. We hear messages about destruction, mortality andthe time of fulfillment. But we also have messages of repentance and of God’s love, mercy andforgiveness. When Jonah tells the people of Ninevah that in forty days God will destroy their city, theyproclaim a fast. In the second reading, Paul’s focus is on the end of the world, a reminder of ourmortality. And Jesus tells us that the kingdom of God is at hand now.
These statements cause me to straighten up and listen, especially when it comes to my health. Lastweek we were reminded that our lives are gifts from God and that our bodies are temples for the HolySpirit to reside. How we treat our body affects our physical, emotional, spiritual health and ultimatelyimpacts how we serve God, and for how long. I don’t know about you but that’s a game changer forme.
Like the people of Ninevah who fasted and the apostles who abandoned their nets, what do we need tofast from or abandon in order to regain control of our health? Do we need to fast or abandon fromconvenience food, trigger foods, idleness, laziness, negative self-talk, procrastination, excuses?
Our Wholiness Plan is not a weight loss diet. The plan is about creating a healthier person. It’s ajourney to wellness and to balance and wholeness of body, mind and spirit. Our goal is to eat real, whole food, as God has given to us. Awareness, learning, and support through the Wholiness Plan hasinspired me to make incremental changes that will ultimately lead to establishing healthier habits andmaking better choices.
Sharing individual stories, struggles, advice, and successes with some of you has been a joy and astrength. I ask for your prayers on this journey. Pleaseknow that you have mine as we continue these next threeweeks. Remember we’re in this together.

Teresa RunyonFaith Life Minister
