Magic squares!

Maths and numbers can be magic!

Look at the magic square. The total along any line,

horizontal, vertical or diagonal is the same.

This is the ‘magic number’.For this square it is 34.

To solve a magic square the first thing you have to do is to find out the ‘magic number’

for that square.

Also you cannot use the same number twice in a square.

Page 13: P4 Home learning w/c 22.6 · P4 Home learning w/c 22.6.20 Hello Primary 4, Parents and Carers! Welcome to the last week of home learning for this term! We hope that you enjoyed the

Have a go at these magic squares! Remember you cannot use the same number twice in a square.

Mild – a, b, c, d – find the magic number by adding the 3 numbers in one of the lines together.

Spicy - e, f, g – the magic number that each line should make is given to you.

Hot challenge – h – make your own! Maybe try using numbers 1 – 9.

Target toss- place a bucket or bag on the floor and then take 10 steps back. Using sock pairs rolled into a ball, try to get as many as you can into the bucket.

Speed bounce- using a rolled up Jumper or towel, make a ‘log’. Then jump either side of it as quickly as you can.

Ball pass- bounce a ball against the wall, using a mixture of chest passes and underarm throws.

Mild•Choose any of the activities above.

•Do 12 jumps, tosses or passes. What is half of 12?

•Time yourself for 1 minute. You can use a smartphone for this. How many did you do in 1 minute?

•Ask someone else in your house to start a stopwatch. Start your exercise. Stop when you think 1 minute is up. Were you right?

•Target toss- take 10 steps back from the target. Can you measure the distance between yourself and the target using: hands? Pencils (same length)? Lego pieces? Choose your own unit of measurement!

Hot•Choose any of the activities above.

•Choose one of these numbers: 32, 40, 48, 56, 64. Now do the number of tosses, jumps or passes for the number you chose. What is 1/8 of this number?

•Do your chosen exercise for 1 minute (timed). Keep count of how many jumps, tosses or passes you managed. If you got an odd number, add 1 more on to make it even. Now calculate half of this amount. Can a family member do half of your total in less than half the time?

•Do the speed bounce- see how many jumps you can do in 15 seconds. Now measure the distance you were jumping (from one side of the log to the other) in cm. Multiply that by the number of jumps you did. What distance did you travel (in jumps) in total?

Spicy•Choose any of the activities above.

•Do 24 jumps, tosses or passes. What is half of 24? What is a quarter?

•Ask someone else in your house to start a stopwatch. Start your exercise. Stop when you think 1 minute is up. Were you right? Try this for 5 minutes.

•Target toss- take 10 steps back from the target. Measure this distance in cm using rulers or a measuring tape. If you don’t have one you can download one here: https://printable-ruler.net/printable-measuring-tape/

WritingThis week we will be looking at acrostic poems.

What is an acrostic poem?

• It is a poem where the first letter of each line spells out the theme of the poem• It does not need to rhyme

Here is an example:

M oondust sparkles in the air like glitterO ver there is the flag left by astronautsO h, we’ll need to go home soonN ext time we will go to Mars!

We would like you to write a poem about the summer holidays. On the next page there are two templates. You can use either “SUMMER” or “HOLIDAY”, or challenge yourself by writing a long poem and use both!

You could try to use a simile or a metaphor for one of your lines ☺

* REMEMBER * Your lines do not need to rhyme but should keep to the theme.

Similes and MetaphorsWhen we say something is like something else we are using a simile.

Similes contain the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

They can be used to make our writing more interesting or humorous.

Can you complete these similes? (answers on the next page).

As keen…. As bold…. As quick…. As cool….

like a runaway horse.

gleamed like pearls.

as round as the full moon.

like charging bulls.

sparkled like diamonds.

Her face was

Ella’s eyes

He bolted out of the room

Grandmother’s false teeth

The children ran

Can you link the ideas below to make similes'?

A simile is where two things are directly compared because they share a common feature. The word AS or LIKE is used to compare the two words. Eg. As cold AS a dog's nose

A metaphor also compares two things, but it does so more directly WITHOUT using as or like. Eg. The shop was a little gold-mine.

Task 1. Copy these sentences into your book.At the end of the sentence, write in brackets whether the sentence is an example of a metaphor or simile.Eg. The clouds were fluffy like cotton wool. (SIMILE)

As slippery as an eel.

Arnie was a man-mountain.

He was a lion in battle.

She is as pretty as a picture.

The striker was a goal machine.

The torch lit up the room as if the sun had risen early.

The moon was a misty shadow.

Task 2. Make up similes of your own by copying and finishing these sentences.

For example:

As good as gold

As heavy as

As cold as

As hard as

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch artist.

He only sold one painting during his lifetime.

Now his paintings are very valuable.

He liked to use bright colours. He used bold brush strokes in his paintings. He used colours to express feelings rather than the true colours he saw.

His paintings of sunflowers are among his most famous works.
