Pastor’s Message A Culture of Death Proverbs 8:35-36 “For whoever finds me finds life … all who hate me love death.” We have become a culture of death. We despise wisdom. We reject the life God gives. On June 27 a 21-year old college student was found guilty of murder for delivering a baby in her sorority house, putting it in a plastic bag and leaving it outside. Critical in her conviction and sentencing were text messages she sent to the person she believed to be the father: “No more baby” and “Taken care of.” But, while we might shudder at the exposure of her actions and attitude, we tend, at the same time, to yawn at the sight of hundreds of placard waving protesters jumping up and down with delight over the Supreme Courts announcement that Texas abortion regulations are unconstitutional. They are giddy with joy. “No more baby”, taken care of.” Seriously what’s the difference? And let’s not forget the murder of 49 innocent people at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida. If I am not mistaken, Omar Mateen was texting during his orgy of violence. He could have easily (I imagine) texted his worshiped Isis leaders, “No more gays, “Taken care of.” He was proud of his actions. The Supreme Court demonstrators were proud. The young woman who disposed of her baby with callous cruelty was proud – or at least she had no shame. We have become a culture of death. It seems that death is our answer for everything. We solve our problems and those of the world through death. The Supreme Court, the young woman, Omar Mateen all believed they were doing the right thing. Death has become the god we serve. This is not wisdom. This is obviously not life. It is reality because we reject the wisdom of God in Jesus Christ. We reject his death that would bring us life, life in God. Death, that is murder, the unjust taking of innocent human life, is never the answer. Only one death has ever solved anything. Jesus died on the cross that we might be reconciled to God and live. He rose again that we might share his life and be sanctified in sacrificial love. In this confused, chaotic, and cruel world we need to be a counter-culture, a culture of life, of life in Christ. He is our answer. Soli Deo Gloria ~ Pastor Jeff

Pastor’s Message

A Culture of Death

Proverbs 8:35-36 “For whoever finds me finds life … all who hate me love death.” We have become a culture of death. Response to the Feast for

Fintonia from Rev. Christopher White

of Gateway EPC

Friends,

Thanks again for you work and prayers for the Feast for Fintonia. We accomplished both our goals: 1). We shared the vision and folks heard a compelling mission description from Samual and Scott (thanks, Scott!) 2). we raised over $9300 for the work in Fintonia. Our goal was $6000 for the roof, and we are very grateful for God’s providence through the generosity of the ministry network. Thanks to all who invited folks, helped us set up, and joined us! If you’d like to see the video with Samuel (who visited VBS @ Harmony a few years ago), the link is https://youtu.be/Gx8Ucm0TAMw. From Missions …

From the City Rescue Mission Dear Harmony Church Family, Thank you so very much for your recent donation to City Rescue Mission Women’s Ministry at Hope Place! We were thrilled to receive such wonderful help to our ministry. Thank you especially to the Youth Group who initiated the project of collecting hygiene items. Thank you also for the comforters and bedding sets and for the coffee. You blessed us in an overwhelming way and our hearts are so grateful.

May God bless you and keep you! Karen Jameson Director of Women’s Ministry From the “Feed My Sheep” Food Cupboard Thank you for your recent donation to the “Feed My Sheep” Food Cupboard. The need for assistance by many families in this area continues. The food and monetary donation we are receiving from individuals, businesses, schools and churches make it possible for us to respond to these needs. Last month 188 families were served including 4 new families. Our volunteer workers appreciate the support you are helping to provide. As you are contributing to the welfare of others, may God’s blessing be with you. Gratefully yours, Shirley Osburn, Secretary

Book-of-the-month for June was The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. This is a “novel of unsentimental charm, humor, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise — and utterly irresistible — storyteller”. The BBT Book Club women gave The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry a 3.5 (4 being the highest), and for the first time they added a “PG13” because of the use of off-color language.

learned from Noah's Ark.

ONE: Don't miss the boat. TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat! THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. FOUR: Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. FIVE: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. SIX: Build your future on high ground. SEVEN: For safety's sake, travel in pairs. EIGHT: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. NINE: When you're stressed, float awhile. TEN: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. ELEVEN: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.

Spotlight on

Jan and Don Burnett Our Harmony friends Jan and Don Burnett will be moving to Massachusetts on July 7. I recently spent a delightful afternoon sitting on their porch and learning a bit more about these 2. Jan grew up in the Boyers area and Don in the Ridgeville/Wiskerville area. Don was in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska for a period of time. They married in 1952 and have lived in many local towns – Ellwood City, Butler, Fredonia, Pardo, Grove City, Hendersonville, & Bullion to name a few! They are the proud parents of 4 chidren. Jay and Ron live about 15 minutes apart in Massachusetts. Jan and Don will be living with Jay and his family. Their daughter, Kathy, and son, Bobby, both are now deceased. 7 grandchidren and 5 great grandchildren complete the family. Jan and Don built the house they currently live in when Don retired in 1995 taking 2 years to complete the project. Their grandson Chad will be moving in and keeping the house in the family. Jan and Don's new address is: 25 School Street, Rehoboth, MA 02769. The Harmony family is going to miss these dear friends. Keep the Burnett's in your prayers as they make this move.

If you have an idea for a future Spotlight article, let me know. Becky Sopher
