Outram School Newsletter Volume 3 Number 4 – 18 August 2016 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for
excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential
Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa What an incredibly busy week it has been! Last Thursday, we experienced near perfect conditions for the running of the Outram School Cross Country over the new rugby grounds course. My crew of helpers and I had to break a hard frost to get all the flags and standards in place but, by the time of racing, we certainly enjoyed a warm winter’s day. The new course provided a challenge for all age groups and I was very pleased to see how well all students ran. The inclusion of the jumps and barrels added something to the event; I think the students enjoyed the challenge of negotiating these. My thanks go to Tania Bellamy who provided the obstacles set up along the course. I thank Darryl MacKenzie who liaised with me over the use of the grounds and opened up the clubrooms for us. A big thank you and acknowledgement to Trevor Braid who prepared and opened up the Year 7 and 8 course extension through his property bordering the rugby grounds. I also want to thank and recognise our senior students. Our Year 7 and 8 team not only marshalled for our school cross country on Thursday, they then repeated the service at the Sth Taieri Cross Country on Tuesday. The level of support for the runners and willingness to safely guide the runners around the course was greatly appreciated and seen by all. It was great to see many of you running alongside students who were ‘flagging’ and needed a bit of support to complete the course; well done! Congratulations to all runners, well done to those selected for, and competed in, the Sth Taieri Cross Country and best wishes to those who have now been selected for the Otago Primary School’s Cross Country to be held at Kaikorai High School on Friday 2 September.
Tuesday also saw four teams participating in the 2016 Numberworks O’Mathalon. All teams performed credibly with our Year 7 team placing third in what was a very close and tight competition. Thank you to Tracey Hunter for preparing and supervising the students for this event.

On Wednesday, we entered a mixed Year 7 and 8 team in the Sassenachs Intermediate Schools Rugby Tournament held at the Kaikorai Rugby Club grounds. We combined with Lee Stream and other invited Taieri players to make up the squad and it was good to provide our seniors boys with an opportunity to play. Thank you to Cindy Holmes who managed the team and our entry into the tournament and thank you to Darryl MacKenzie who coached the boys on the day. This morning Room 7 is heading into Tahuna Intermediate for our very first experience of Ukulele Jam. I hope to have some photos from the event in next week’s newsletter. Thank you to Kate Jackson for organising Room 7’s participation in the 2016 event and for preparing the children. I think we had a record turnout of parents and students for this year’s Year 7 and 8 information evening. It was a pleasure to outline the things we provide and offer to our most senior students and to explain what having a strong Year 7 and 8 presence means to us as a school. Two things that stood out for me; the passion and enthusiasm of those teachers working with our seniors and the relaxed, easy exchange between the attending senior students and staff. We are fortunate to have both qualities as part of the senior school experience. We look forward to another busy week next week. Tuesday and Thursday will see a large number of our Year 5 to Year 8 students playing in the primary schools’ netball tournament. On Wednesday our Kapa Haka group join other Taieri schools for Hui Ako. It will be a wonderful experience to see our Kapa Haka perform to a wider audience. I will share these things in next week’s newsletter and at Room 3s assembly next Friday afternoon. Thank you for the continuing support for all these events; it is so important to see parents and the wider school community encouraging our students as they participate and compete in a wide range of sporting, cultural and academic events. Nga mihi nui

Here are some stories from Room 3
“ Brmmm, brmmm” went the car. We got to my cousin’s house and the paddock was filled with ice. I felt excited. I jumped over the gate. There was an electric fence. Luckily, I didn’t get an electric shock. Then I raced my cousin up the hill. After we got there, I chucked a piece of ice at him. He said “Don’t!” Then he chucked a piece at me. I said “Stop it!” By Ryan Miller I ran through the door and I was happy. It was games night. I did hobbies. I heard kids chatting and I saw crafts. I smelt supper. I got two chicken nuggets, one biscuit and a drink. It was yummy. Sadly, it finished. Then I got two chocolate bars and went home. By Livy Urquhart In the weekend it snowed. When it was snowing I was watching TV. Then I decided to go outside. When I was outside it was freezing so I rushed back inside. I was toasty warm by the fire where Sam was. By Katelyn Urquhart “Brrr, my hands are cold!” I thought as I cut up the wood with Dad. The chainsaw went “Chchchhchc” It was very loud!! By Macklyn O’Connor Do you like snow? I do. Well, this is how it happened. I woke up and crept towards my window. There, on the grass was snow. It was pitch white. I ran outside and made a snowball. I chucked it at my brother as he came outside. By Violet Bennie On the snow day in the morning, I went outside and the grass was covered in snow. I ran as fast as I could and said to my Mum “It is snowing!!” So we got our clothes on and went outside. We had a snow fight. I won!! By Sophie Beaumont Last Friday when we were dropping off the works ute, we saw a snowman on the back of a ute. On Three Mile Hill we stopped and had a snow ball fight and I won. By Oliver Warren In the weekend, it snowed at our house. We made snow angels and snow men. We made snow tracks with the sled as well. It was fun in the snow. We made a snowman as tall as a table.
