Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, At the recent That Man is You summer session Brother Loughlan Sofield. SOLT shared the following poem of St. Teresa of Avila. It speaks to the beauty of the mystery of the Incarnation. Not only did Christ become human to be our savior, but his mission continues to the present day through the humanity of his disciples. We don’t often think about being part of the mystery of the Incarnation, but that is how Jesus chose to continue his mission, not from afar, but from deep within us. Over the next few weeks I will offer some meditative thoughts on how we are the hands, the eyes, and the feet of Christ in the 21st century. The mission continues, the hope leads us on, and God’s love endures forever in and through our hands, our eyes, and our feet in the name of Christ.

Christ Has No Body Christ has no body now on earth but yours,

no hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which is to look out

Christ’s compassion to the world; Yours are the feet with which he is to go about

doing good. Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now.

– St Teresa of Avila

What does it mean and how are we the Body of Christ on earth in the 21st Century? Through the sacraments of Christian Initiation we become one with Christ and make the commitment to conform ourselves to Christ each day. In Baptism we are told that we have “become a new creation and have clothed ourselves in Christ.” We are also told that we are to bring the dignity that is ours in Christ into the presence of God when our earthly journey is completed. To be Christ’s Body is to live a life of dignity that reveals God’s grace that makes us holy. Not an out of this world holi-ness but a holiness revealed in our flesh, in our charity, in patience, in our willingness to forgive, and in our commit-ment to do God’s work each day. To be Christ’s Body on earth means to respect our bodies and those of others. It is to refuse to get caught up in self care and to always be willing to show care for others. In Confirmation we are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit that strengthens us to live the life of Christ. As Christ’s Body we discover that we are strong, courageous and zealous enough to lay down our lives in service to others as Christ did. We are Christ’s Body that witnesses to the sanctity of human life, that visits the sick, that cares for our neighbors, that is a healing reconcil-ing touch in our world, that fasts so that others can be fed. We live with the power of Christ that makes God’s differ-ence in our world. When we receive the Eucharist we are fed with the Body of Christ and called to become what we eat: the Body of Christ that suffers while it heals the pain of others, that is broken while it makes others whole, that dies while it opens a way of life for others, that is raised from the dead and gives the hope of eternal life to all. As Christ’s Body we help the world find its way to Christ,

May God’s Peace be Yours, Msgr. Jay

Next Sunday’s Readings First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Responsorial: 40:2-4, 18 Second Reading: Hebrews 12:1-4 Gospel: Luke 12:49-53

Theme: God's power among us gives us strength. Step One: Listen to the Word When you hear the reading today, what word or phrase caught your ear? What really struck you in today's reading? Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: What is one way you can be closer to Jesus today? Question for Youth: We are assured that God will be with us as we go through life, so what strategy do you use to keep God in mind as you deal with the ups and downs of life as a young adult? Question for Adults: Share about a time when life's struggles were so difficult for you that you nearly "threw in the towel." What signs did you see then that God remained with you?

Breaking Bread with the Hungry Dear Companions,

On Friday we broke bread with 260 guests. Because of the sweltering heat we brought two cases of water to the church steps for the guests to hydrate themselves while they waited for dinner to start. When one guy complained that the water wasn’t cold, several “but it’s wet” rejoinders were thrown at him. Several poured water on their heads. A little later Jack Draper placed an orange cooler of water on the steps. In no time there was a line to get water that was both wet and cold.

Also on Friday the Holy Father spoke to the kids at World Youth Day in Krakow. “Where is God,” he asked, “ if there are men and women who are hungry and thirsty, homeless, exiles and refugees? God is in them. Jesus suffers in them. He is thirsty in them”, said the Pope.

“I was thirsty and you gave me to drink.”

This is your chance to win two season tickets (value: $1,500) for the 2016 Ravens’ home season of 8 games, or cash prizes of $500 or $300. We need your participation so that we can continue to provide support to Seminarian and Religious formation in the Baltimore Archdio-cese as well as to select local charities. Last year, more than $16 out of every $20 raffle ticket sold was contributed. Donations in lieu of ticket purchases also are welcome. Tickets are $20 each or (new this year) 3 for $50. Prize drawing will be at 9:15 am on Sunday, Sep-tember 4 in the Church Hall.

The 2016 Walk and Run for Life is September 17th. Register today to run the 5k Trail Run, or walk the family-friendly Life Trail. Set on the beautiful historic Belvior Scott’s Plantation in Crownsville, the Walk and Run for Life is an important event to raise funds for the Preg-nancy Clinic to save women and babies from abortion. Join us for the 5k Trail Run or the one-mile Life Trail, bring the kids (there’ll be face painting and a moon bounce, and a special Toddler Trot for the littlest racers!) and even well-behaved dogs on leashes are wel-come. Register today and start raising funds to win great prizes! For all the details go to www.walkandrun.org

The AA County’s Respite Care Referral Program is recruiting caring individuals to train as Companion-Caregivers for the county’s seniors and adults with disabilities. Clients and families are often looking for assistance with meal preparation, shopping, transportation to appointments, as well as companionship. Respite Care workers make their own schedule, working as much or as little as desired. Prior to placement on the registry, workers will be required to complete a three (3) day training at the Department of Aging & Disabilities. Applications to join the registry can be downloaded from the Department’s web-site at www.aacounty.org/aging or by calling 410-222-4377.
