This Sunday’s Readings First Reading Joshua 5:9a, 10-12 Responsorial Psalm 23: 1-6 Second Reading 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Gospel Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32

Next Sunday’s Readings First Reading Isaiah 43: 16-21 Responsorial Psalm 126: 1-6 Second Reading Philippians 3:8-14 Gospel John 8: 1-11

Theme: God wants us to come back. Now is the time to reconcile. Step One: Listen to the Word As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Step Two: Look into your life. Question for Children: Who is the one person you most need to say, “I’m sorry” to in your family?

Question for Youth: Is it difficult for you to say “I’m sorry” when you hurt another or get off track in your own life? Why or why not?

Question for Adults: How have you or your family welcomed a family member who has been distant and/or absent from you?

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: The rose colored vestments of this Laetare Sunday proclaim that the Easter Sunrise is only three weeks away. Now is the time to assess and renew our Lenten disciplines for our final push on our Lenten pilgrimage. If we find ourselves missing the mark on our early Lenten commitments, it is not the time to give up. It is the time to renew them and step forward to meet the Risen Lord at Easter. Where do you expect to meet him? What are you prepared to say or hear? The joy of this Fourth Sunday of Lent brings us the encouragement to continue on our way so that we are prepared to meet our Redeemer. If you have not done so already, now might also be the time to make your commitment to this year’s Arch-bishop’s Annual Appeal. The Mercy of God overcame the suffering and death of Christ and opened the door of hope and life to the world through the Risen Christ. Our support of the Appeal supports the powerful work of God’s Mercy throughout the Archdiocese. We are about half way toward our target. The sooner we reach it, the sooner we can stop doing the Appeal and begin doing the important works of mercy God entrusts to us. During this week’s Inter Parish Mission, Br. Laughlin Sofield asked this intriguing question: where was the Prodigal Son’s mother? I share the following personal story because I want you to get an idea of where she might have been. It is not a story of the past. It is our story. Once my father and brother had a terrible argument. It led to years of my brother’s absence, miscommunica-tion, hurt feelings, and a sense of helplessness. It hit a very difficult moment when my brother was removed from my parents’ wills. It spread way beyond their relationship. It affected everyone in the family. We could not find a way to resolve the issue. My mother, on the other hand, worked the back doors. She prayed. She talked to my brother’s friends and quietly kept track of what was happening in his life. I discovered later that she sent him birthday, Christmas, Easter, and his wedding anniversary cards. None of these got a response, but that did not stop her. In her last year on earth, one day I was visiting her during a hospital stay and it was clear that she was in the last stage of her life on earth. She said “I have one more thing to do on earth.” I asked, “What’s that?” She replied, “I’ve got to get your father talking to your brother again.” I replied, “That means you’re going to be around a long time. We better start planning your next birthday.” She smiled and said, “Well, let’s see what I can do.” About a week before she died, I went to visit her one evening and my brother was sitting at her bedside. Later that week he visited my father and they talked. When my mother died, they were reconciled. He even got back in the will. None of the difficulties mattered any more. When we were leaving her grave, I went back and quietly said to her: “Well done, mom, well done.” I am sure the Prodigal’s mother had a role in bringing God’s mercy to a troubled relationship. Shouldn’t we all?

May God’s Peace be Yours, Msgr. Jay
