Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
October is Respect Life Month. Our church speaks the truth about the sanctity of human life and witnesses to the preciousness of every human person, no matter their position in life, or what they have done. We pray and reflect on these matters in October so that we can witness to the basic right to life and protect life in all of its stages and conditions every day. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on how we think and treat others when we disagree with them or when they have offended or frightened us: the child not willingly conceived, the addict, the prisoner, the immigrant, the bothersome neighbor, the person caught in poverty, the unemployed, the under employed, the frail vulnerable elderly, the parishioner or priest with whom we disagree. Our conduct towards these persons and so many others reveals the value that we put on human life, and our commitment to honor and protect God’s precious gift of life. To respect each person’s life, to lift up the dignity of every person, to pro-tect the most vulnerable, especially the unborn and the elderly, to work to develop every person to their fullest potential is to speak to the heart and conscience of our nation and culture that it may learn the value and the dignity of each human person through the witness of our lives. Let us pray this month that we may be faithful witnesses to the sanctity and the preciousness of each human person every day. May the message of our lives teach our world and culture to care for and cherish human life in all of its stages and conditions. This is the greatest statement of respect for life that we could give.
In his encyclical, Laudato Si, the Care for our Common Home, Pope Francis makes the point that care for creation involves much more than good stewardship of earth, sky, and sea. It also involves caring for human persons, born and unborn, because we too are God’s creations. We are stewards of one another because we have the same origin and destiny, the loving presence of God. We are to help one another along our earthly pil-grimage by being a living human experience of God’s love for us. That can be a challenge but God has loved us first and gives us the grace to remind one another that he loves us always.
We have many activities to highlight care for the many stages of life. This weekend our speakers are ad-dressing the care for the unborn. It is important for those children, our nation, and us that we speak and act to protect the unborn from abortion and encourage and help all mothers to get necessary prenatal care for them-selves and their children. I encourage everyone to participate in the 40 Days for Life effort through prayer, fast-ing. and reflection on the sanctity of the human person we prepare to be witnesses to God’s precious gift of life. On Mondays this month we have made the commitment to stand in witness to the right to life of the unborn by praying and standing as silent witnesses to life outside of the abortion clinic in Annapolis. If you wish to partici-pate in this stewardship of life, contact Lynn Watts, Our Respect Life Committee chair.
May God’s Peace be Yours,
Msgr. Jay

This Sunday’s Readings
First Reading: Habakkuk 1:2-3, 2:2-4
Responsorial: Psalm 95:1-2, 6-9
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14
Gospel: Luke 17:5-10
Next Sunday’s Readings
First Reading: 2 Kings 5:14-17
Responsorial: Psalm 98:1-4
Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Gospel: Luke 17:11-19
Theme: Faith is the anchor and force of life.
Step One: Listen to the Word
As you hear the words of St. Paul proclaimed in this reading, what strikes you most? What word or phrase caught your ear?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: Jesus teaches us that our faith is is powerful and with it, we can do great things. We can forgive, love, and share
with others. Which of these do you do most often?
Question for Youth: The Gospel tells us even a little bit of faith is enough to make amazing things happen. How are you keeping your
faith alive and growing? What good things happen in your life because of your faith?
Question for Adults: Being “in Christ” means living as Christ teaches. What signs do you see in your life of generosity, forgiveness, hos-
pitality, or any other of Jesus’ teachings?
WE PRAY FOR THOSE IN NEED

EVANGELIZATION & FAITH FORMATION NEWS
First Eucharist/Reconciliation: We have our Parent/Guardian (adults only) Orientation meeting on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall. We will outline our parish process for preparing your children to receive the Sacra-ments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Please attend the Orientation meeting so we can answer your questions regard-ing the process and celebrations of the sacraments.
Please return the following items to the Office of Faith Formation by the Parent Orientation meeting on Monday,
October 3rd:
A completed First Reconciliation/Eucharist 2016-17 Application (make additional copies if you have more than one child preparing for a sacrament)
A copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate.
Family Worship Weekends
One week each month, instead of having the customary class times, faith formation students will be expected to attend Sunday Mass with their families. The themes of those Sunday liturgies will reflect what is being taught in the faith formation curriculum and giving you the opportunity to discuss and pray about these liturgical themes with your children during the Sunday time together and into following week.
Faith Formation Registration: The Registration for all 2016-17 Faith Formation classes and programs is still open. Register now to secure your choices of classes and scheduling. See the registration form for details. Some classes are full and !!! http://www.ourladyofthefields.org/forms/

Breaking Bread with the Hungry
Dear Companions, We broke bread with 316 guests at our rehearsal dinner for the wedding of the Lamb. This is a hundred more guests than last week.
Many of our guests are homeless because they have mental ill-ness. Although there is government help for people with disabili-ties, those with mental illness have an especially hard time finding their way through the bureaucratic maze.
I spoke with Ms. Bea who graduated from Juilliard almost forty years ago with a degree in vocal arts. After a career performing professionally, her life began to fall apart with her husband’s death. Then when mental illness took hold in earnest, she became home-less. Now with the help of a caseworker she hopes to get into housing before the weather turns cold.
I asked if she still sings. “I always sang for the glory of God, but now I only sing in church every Sunday.”
