PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

Even though we have some good leaders, many of our leaders fail us. Instead of caring for the flock, many only look for their own good. Selfishness destroys a shepherd.

“Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture says the Lord …” Jeremiah

Despite this sad reality, Jesus never leaves our side. He is the True Shepherd.

“The Lord is my Shepherd … there is nothing I shall want …” Psalm 23 In our struggles, the Lord stays with us. He frees us from all painful loneliness.

“Even though I walk in the dark valley … I fear no evil …

for You are at my side …” Psalm 23

Let us pray for good shepherds for our parish communities. The Lord hears the pray-ers that come from the heart.

“I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble …” Jeremiah

Our Lady School News My brothers and sisters,

In the first reading, there is a lament from the Prophet against the bad shepherds. He says, “Woe to the shepherds who sca er and let the sheep per-ish from the flock.” There are unfortunately many social and religious leaders who drag others along wrong paths. There are professionals who, instead of serving others, exploit them. There are parents who, instead of being examples and guides for their children, are rather teachers of the wrong way. All Chris ans have a role of guiding others, and we have responsibility to others who follow us. And the Lord requires us to account for other people over whom we had influence with our words and our lives.

Blessings, Deacon Carlos

CELL PHONE SNAPSHOTS MAY NOT BE SO INNOCENT

Nearly everyone has a cell phone and that may be great for communica on and connec on, but it also gives rise to concerns about who may be taking photos of you or your children without your knowledge. You can’t police the behaviors of others around you, but you can avoid taking pictures of your own children in public, and pos ng photos online that give away the loca ons of your favorite parks and hangouts. If your children have phones, monitor the photos they are taking and sharing, too. For more informa on, call our Parish Contact Theresa Nicholas at (562) 923-3246 ext. 211

JULY 22, 2018 PAGE 5

SABBATH REST Sabbath. We hear the word, and many think of the obliga on to a end Sunday Mass. Today, we hear Jesus say to the disciples, “Come away to a de-serted place and rest a while.” This is the true spirit of sabbath—to take me away, to worship God, par cipate in Eucharist, to be refreshed in body, mind, and spirit. Thought of in this way, sabbath is not an obliga on but a privilege, a gi rather than a burden. Making sabbath begins with a commitment to put God first. That is what the shepherds that Jer-emiah called for were to do, to lead the people to be people of and for God. This is what Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leads us to do, and he shows us how to do this. Not only does Jesus take me away for prayer and to “rest a while,” he also spends me with the people who need him. In sabbath, we spend me with God, family, our faith community, and friends. And this spending me “with” helps us to re-orient our lives toward what is most im-portant. FROM SABBATH TO THE REST OF THE WEEK Taking sabbath to heart has a significant impact on the way in which we live our lives, prac cally and spiritually. The prac cal part is evident on the sur-face. Se ng aside me for Sunday Mass, quiet, and

me with others requires planning and commit-ment. There is a prac cal dimension to the physical and emo onal benefits of such me away from the stress and busyness of our daily lives as well. The spiritual impact of sabbath may take a li le while to begin to perceive. When we put God first in our lives, everything else falls into place in a different, holier way. We begin to see God’s grace in the daily circumstances of our lives, and to grow in under-standing of what we are to do and how we are called to act. We know who we are in God’s sight, and whose we are, as children of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

Prayer and Life Workshops

The Bishops of the United States created the National Collections to combine resources in order to carry out our mission as Catholics. It is right and just that we give back through these collections. Our parish’s contribution will help people around the world to live better and grow in the love of Jesus. With your help, this collection will sup-port many of the poorest dioceses in the county. To donate please pick up an envelope, which are located at each door of the church. Thank you for your generosity.

This weekend, parishioner and Catholic author Jerad P. Bisson will be in the church plaza a er the English masses selling his books: “Our Ordinary Lives Hold An Extraordi-nary Purpose” and “Shining Christs Light.” Jerad was engaged to his fiancé who began taking him to Mass on Sundays and began a ending classes to become Catholic. During this pro-cess, he underwent a drama c conversion. As a tradesman by day and a writer by night, Jerad set out to prove that anybody can be called to do remarkable things for the Lord—especially when we ask him through his Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. Jerad is a prime example of an ordinary man accom-plishing extraordinary things. A percentage of the proceeds’ from the books sold will be donated to the pew refur-bishment fund. Please come out and support this great cause while enriching your rela onship with God.
