INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners,

Our English retreat last Saturday was a reflection on the topic of virtues. This section of the Cate-chism begins with article #1803 which defines virtue in this way, “A virtue is an habitual and firm disposi-tion to do the good.” A habit is a pattern of behavior. A disposition is an inclination toward something or someone. During Lent, we as a church, take time to examine our behaviors and inclinations with respect to God and one another. As we do this, we ask God to help us to become more virtuous which means we become more receptive and cooperative with goodness in our lives. The ultimate good in life is Je-sus Christ. The readings of Mass get more intense as we come closer to the celebration of Christ’s passion at the end of this month. Today we hear about the Jesus clearing the temple or if you are in a Mass with candidates preparing for the sacraments, it will be the piercing conversation between Jesus and the woman at the well who had many husbands. In both gospels, we see Jesus confronting destructive pat-terns of behavior and calling for change in people’s lives. Let us imagine ourselves in these gospel readings and the readings of the upcoming weeks. Let us allow Jesus to help us to develop more and more the ways of acting and thinking that imitate him.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH   There’s no be er way to deepen our Lenten prac ce than to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do with our right rela onship to God, get the most ink. The one we busy people proba-bly have the most problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath.  

  If we take this commandment literally, babies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals will not be served. The sick will go una ended and nothing that has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)?  

  We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real Sabbath  me in our lives. The point of this commandment is that God has given us a great gi : one whole day per week when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the Lord is perfect, / refresh-ing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great gi , to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking.

SANTIFICA EL SÁBADO No hay mejor forma de profundizar nuestras devociones de Cuaresma que repasar los Diez Man-damientos. Los primeros tres, los cuales se refieren a una buena relación con Dios, son más extensos. Quizás el que más nos cueste a nosotros, que siempre estamos tan ocupados, es santificar las fiestas re-firiéndose al día del Señor.

Si tomáramos este mandamiento literalmente, no cambiaríamos a los bebés, los platos quedarían en la mesa y quizás ni siquiera serviríamos las comidas. Los enfermos no serían atendidos y no se haría nada que estuviera relacionado con el trabajo físico. ¿Se considera trabajo al trabajo mental? ¿Y qué hay de cambiarle el pañal al bebé (¡pobrecito!)?

Debemos depender de Dios para discernir de qué manera debemos respetar y santificar el día del Señor en nuestras vidas. La clave de este mandamiento es que Dios nos ha dado un gran regalo: un día entero por semana en el cual somos libres para descansar, rendirle culto a Dios, cantar, celebrar, amar y alegrarnos. Como proclama el Salmo 19 (18): “Los mandatos del Señor son rectos y alegran el cora-zón” (19 [18]:8). Nuestro descanso del domingo es un gran regalo que debemos recibir de Dios con alegría, no poniendo peros.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO

Queridos Feligreses: Nuestro retiro de inglés el sábado pasado fue una reflexión sobre el tema de las virtudes. Esta sec-ción del Catecismo comienza con el artículo # 1803 que define la virtud de esta manera: "Una virtud es una disposición habitual y firme para hacer el bien". Un hábito es un patrón de conducta. Una disposición es una inclinación hacia algo o alguien. Durante la Cuaresma, nosotros, como iglesia, nos tomamos el tiempo para examinar nuestros comportamientos e inclinaciones con respecto a Di-os y los unos a los otros. Al hacer esto, le pedimos a Dios que nos ayude a ser más virtuosos, lo que significa que nos volvemos más receptivos y cooperativos con la bondad en nuestras vidas. El bien supremo en la vida es Jesucristo. Las lecturas de la Misa se vuelven más intensas a medida que nos acercamos a la celebración de la pasión de Cristo a fines de este mes. Hoy oímos que el Jesús está limpiando el templo o si estás en una misa con los candidatos que se preparan para los sacramentos, será la conversación penetrante entre Jesús y la mujer del pozo que tuvo muchos maridos. En ambos evangelios, vemos a Jesús en-frentando patrones destructivos de comportamiento y llamando a un cambio en la vida de las per-sonas. Imaginémonos en estas lecturas del Evangelio y las lecturas de las próximas semanas. Per-mitamos que Jesús nos ayude a desarrollar más y más las formas de actuar y pensar que lo imitan.
