IN MEMORIAM Living or dead, an Elk is never forgotten,
never forsaken. Morning and noon may
pass him by, the light of day sink heed-
lessly in the west, but ere the shadows of
midnight shall fall, the chimes of memory
will be pealing forth the friendly message,
“To Our Absent Members.”

Exalted Ruler’s Message
Hello!
As I write my last message to you I am thinking about the past two years and how fast they have
gone by.
We have come a long way and everyone should be very proud of that fact.
Please congratulate the new officers and continue to be as supportive as you always have been. Installation of
officers will be Thursday, April 4 at 5:30 with cocktails and heavy hors d' oeuvres to follow. The price is $15.00.
Contact Julie for reservations. Come and enjoy this evening as it is the start of a very busy year for them.
We still need nominations for Leading Knight and Loyal Knight.
Let’s keeping moving forward in 2013 with a refocus on our goals as Elks: 1) Help those in our community,
Youth, Veterans, and those less fortunate (Charity); 2) Appreciate another point of view or idea (Justice); 3) Con-
tinue to build our Lodge through new members and volunteerism (Brotherly Love); and 4) Keep sacred our
unique traditions (Fidelity). I had listened to another Exalted Ruler say this and it really holds true.
Finally, I want to say I am very excited - don’t get me wrong I am sad too – when you put your heart and soul
into something it can be hard to let go - to be stepping down but will continue to assist on committees throughout
the Elks organization.
Thank you for all of your support. We could not have done anything without all of you.
Happy Spring!!!

VOLUNTEER DAY AT THE LODGE!
On Sunday, April 7, the Lodge carpets are being cleaned. We need volunteers to
help move furniture around that day. We also need volunteers to take complete
inventory of Lodge supplies and to clean out some rooms that badly need cleaning
— like the Pool Room! If you are able and available, please come to the Lodge
about 10:00 that morning to help.
Elkliner Editor Wanted!
If you are proficient in Microsoft
Publisher and are interested in putting
together the Elkliner each month, please
contact Sherie Sasso at the Lodge (608-

The Wisconsin Elks State Convention will be held in Eau Claire on May 2-5. If you are interested in
attending, the deadline for pre-registration is April 26, 2013. You may download a registration form at
wielks.org.
The 149th Grand Lodge Convention is in Reno, Nevada this year, from July 14 - 18. Details can be found on
the Elks.org web site. If you are interested in joining the Wisconsin delegation, please contact James Meyer,
PSP, at 920-723-1110.
If you receive your Elkliner by mail, and you
have an email address, please contact Sherie
Sasso at [email protected]. Costs of print-

RED CROSS ONE-A-WEEK CLUB
The Madison Elks Club has been a One-A-Week club member since 1979 when
six blood donations were credited to our organization.
The goal of each of the 182 clubs is to provide one donor a week or 52
donations during the year. Our Club’s record has been far from impressive; it
took 25 years, through 2004, to finally reach our quota when 57 donations were
credited to the Club’s account. We exceeded 100 donations in 2009, 2010, and
2011. Donations dropped to a disappointing 75 units last year.
Donating blood is more than adding numbers to the Club account. It is life
saving, locally, state-wide, and nationally. Units not collected locally due to
Superstorm Sandy were made up by supplies furnished from blood banks nation
-wide. On the local scene, two-year-old Olivia Diaz of Monona was diagnosed
with a malignant tumor in February 2012. Throughout frequent visits to
American Family Children’s Hospital, she received roughly 120 blood
transfusions as part of her chemotherapy treatment. A stem cell transplant in
November has provided a happy ending, which, without blood donors such as
yourself, might have otherwise resulted in tragic consequences.
Please continue to be a regular blood donor and encourage your friends and
relatives to donate also. Dedicating their donations to the Madison Elks Club
program would really be appreciated.
A sincere and heartfelt thank you to the following individuals who have
dedicated their donations to our program during the period August 1, 2012 to
January 31, 2013: June Bennett (2), June Bokovitz (2), Nick Camren (2), Laura
Cole (2), Patti Cole (7), Lou Gehrig (3), Dave Lerdahl (4), Doris Pulling, Dana
Skillrud (3), Christy Shafer, Bernie Reinfeldt (2), Kevin Retelle, Mark Thom,
Mary Vroman (4), Mary Whitcomb (2).
If you neglected to sign the One-A-Week donor book or your donation was not
acknowledged, please contact Ken Van at 608-221-1616 and a correction will
be made at a later date. Thanks again for your dedicated support of this most
necessary program.
