A MESSAGE FROM OUR ER

Greetings 2427,

September is here, cooler weather, football, fall colors. Oh, and two of our Lodge’s biggest fundrais-ing events. The month kicks off on Saturday,

September 9th with the Central District An-nual Fall Conference and District Deputy Clinic hosted by our Lodge. The doors will open at 11:00 AM for a lunch; the meeting will begin at noon. These meetings have important and interesting information re-garding Elkdom in our District. I would like to invite all members to attend.

Next up on Friday, September 15th and Sat-urday, September 16th is the 43rd Annual Arts and Crafts Festival, Taste of Hutch. Darla and Jeff Hartwig will need all hands on deck, help to set up, help to serve, cook, and tear down.

Last but not least, the annual Elk’s Gun Show on Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th. Dale Harbarth does a fantastic job with this great event. There will be much help needed. There will be signup sheets at the Lodge, with all the fund raisers coming up, please take some time out of your schedule and make some time for your Lodge; there are many shifts available for these three events. I challenge you all to be active members of Lodge 2427.

The Elks Duffers Golf tourney was held on August 5th and I’m sure a good time was had by all. Thanks, Lane Schlecht. Also thank you to Tammy Lehn and her crew on hosting the District Soccer Shoot. I would personally like to thank everyone that

helped with the Orange Spectacular this year. We had great weather and sold a lot of ice cream!

September Lodge meetings will be held on the 7th and the 21st. On the 21st, we will be initiating five new members. All are welcome to attend. This will bring us to seven new members since April. That is a good start, here comes the but…, but have you told a friend, family member, or co-worker about the good Elkdom provides for many people in our community and communities across this great country. For those of you that have been to an initiation, a change was vot-ed on and approved at the National Conven-tion to return to the long form initiation, so we will be using this on the 21st.

Our new G.E.R. is Malcolm J. McPherson, Jr. His motto is “Strengthening Elkdom through Community Awareness.” A sure way for us to accomplish this is by all of your involve-ment in Lodge 2427 activities in and about our community.

I’m extending an invitation to each and eve-ry one of you to stop out and enjoy a re-freshing drink, and try some great food from the kitchen, play a little Bingo, try your luck at pull tabs, or just enjoy some company and relax. Make sure to say hi to Jen and our great staff!

I will leave you with this, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there” Will Rogers

Grand Exalted Ruler’s Message Honorable Malcolm J. McPherson, Jr

Invite a friend to

join the Elks!

The school bell is

ringing. School is in

session. So slow

down and watch for

children going off to

school. I hope every-

one had a good sum-

mer.

October is the B. P.

O. Does District

Meeting which will be held in Des Moines,

Iowa. Discussion will be held at our next

meeting about going to the meeting.

September brings us back to our busy

schedule. Our Business Meeting will be on

Tuesday, September 12. Alexia Person will

host the meeting. We will meet at the Elks

Lodge at 10 a.m. to car pool to her home.

The Elks’ Gun and Coin Show will again

be held at the McLeod County Fairgrounds

on September 23 and 24. All hands on

deck! Everyone is needed to step up and

help serve at the Food Stand during the two

busy days.

Here’s wishing everyone a happy

Labor Day weekend.

Peanut Cookies

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup white sugar

1 cup shortening (not butter or margarine)

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1½ tsp. baking soda

1 cup crushed Corn Flakes

1 cup quick oatmeal

1 cup salted peanuts

Cream together the sugars and shortening. Add

eggs and vanilla and beat well.

Add the rest of the ingredients until well mixed.

Chill in the refrigerator for one hour.

Roll into 1-inch balls and dip the top into addition-

al white sugar.

Place on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes

at 375 degrees.

Practice the three R’s:

recruit,

retain,

respond

With summer winding down and

your Lodge meetings and fall pro-

grams starting up again, there’s no

better time to focus on an important

aspect of Elkdom: membership. We

cannot sustain our organization

without installing new Members,

and by focusing on membership growth at your Local

Lodge, you are investing in the future of the Order.

Membership is key to my theme of “Strengthening Elkdom

Through Community Awareness,” since there can be no

community without Members. At the local level, I encour-

age all Lodges to actively promote new Member recruit-

ment at your upcoming fall events, and I call on officers

and committees to lead the charge in creating program-

ming and opportunities to involve new faces.

When your existing Members are engaged and excited to

lend a hand, it generates interest in joining the Order, as

well as shines a positive light on your Lodge within your

greater community, county and state. A Lodge that suc-

cessfully recruits and retains will be better poised to re-

spond to helping those in need.

There are many ways to practice the three R’s. Recruit new

Members from your circle of friends and family, invite non

-members to Elks events, and further promote the Elks or-

ganization at all events by setting up a membership and

public relations information table.

Retain your current membership by working with officers

and Members to keep your Lodge active in the community

with monthly charitable and social events, and enlist the

help of each and every Member to help run these functions.

Teamwork boosts morale and keeps Members happy to be

part of the group.

With these practices in place, your Lodge will be set up for

success, as we have in the past 150 years, to respond to the

needs of your community and ultimately fulfill your organ-

ization’s goals.

SECRETARY’S CORNER It is truly amazing how fast this summer has gone. We are already moving into September with the Taste of Hutch Food Stand dur-

ing the Arts and Crafts Festival and the Gun, Knife and Coin Show the end of September. Please stop at the Lodge and sign up and

offer your time to help make these functions successful.

Currently we have 29 members that are past due on their yearly dues. Malcolm J. McPherson, Jr, Grand Exalted Ruler, is challeng-

ing all lodges to Strengthen Elkdom by +1 through Community Awareness. Become a recruiter and ask a friend today. He would

like the lodges to initiate a large class during September and October in his honor. Our next initiation of new members will be

Thursday, September 21, 2017. Please come and join and welcome these new members to Hutchinson Lodge.

Climb the Stairs to Success earns the following: • Exalted Rulers of Lodges with a +1 gain wins a GER Certificate • Recruit or rein-

state 3 members earns a GER award pin • Recruit or reinstate 11 members earns an Elks Watch • Recruit or reinstate 33 members

earns an Elks Desk Clock

This is a challenge to all of us to assist Exalted Ruler Pat May meet his membership goal of 22+ members this year. There is a list

up at the Lodge of all past due members along with their proposers. Please review and let’s get this ball rolling to clean up the num-

ber of past due dues and talk to friends and family about Hutchinson Elks. There is a great pamphlet at the Lodge that identifies

what our Local Lodge does for our community. Use this as a tool to talk about who we are. Again, keep your eyes on the calendar

of the various events at the Lodge.

Hope to see you at the Lodge.
