30 years of Surprises! There is no way to describe the surprise I experienced last Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall other than “you got me!” I had no clue that so many would honor my thirty years of service to the Diocese of Bismarck. I never expected my twin brother to hide the plans from me consid-ering how many times we had talked in the last few weeks. I never would have believed he could have found those pho-tos. I am amazed but oh so grateful to all who made this an-niversary so memorable. It was unlike any other I have had in the past 30 years. Thank you to all for your well wishes, cards and gifts. Thirty-five years ago I entered the seminary, surprised to think God may be calling me to the priesthood. I thought that maybe the idea would go away, but it didn’t. I was sur-prised at that. Even when I doubted that God could be call-ing me to the priesthood, the seminary apparently believed otherwise. I was surprised then, although they weren’t. I am grateful for the formation I received from 1983 to 1988. I was also surprised again when I found my way to North Dakota in 1985 and discovered I was called to serve the Diocese of Bismarck. This time, I surprised my family, the seminary, two vocation directors, one bishop and an arch-bishop. By that time, they had come to know me better than I did myself and agreed, God was calling me to the prairie. On June 1, 1988, at one o’clock in the afternoon at the Ca-thedral of the Holy Spirit, I was ordained a priest for the Di-ocese of Bismarck. The temperature was 104 degrees. With family and friends from St. Paul who drove the 450 miles to attend the ceremony, it was a memorable day. Like anyone who makes a lifelong commitment, I didn’t know what was in store for a “rookie” priest with the Chrism oil still fresh from his anointing. Thirty years later, I can only describe it as a life filled with surprises, that include countless numbers of people I have been privileged to serve as a priest and pas-tor. At times I was surprised at the sacrifices I had made to serve the Diocese of Bismarck as a parish priest, but God still knows best, so if I have learned anything in the last thir-ty years, it is to be prepared to be surprised. However, last Sunday I was completely surprised and a bit overwhelmed. Thanks to all those who “put one over on me” and all the work to “pull it off.” As I write this I am flying high, 36,000 feet to be exact, and humbled with gratitude for the kindness shown to me by so many. All three parishes were well represented and a contingent from St. John’s in Minot as well. At this altitude, I am peering out at the prairie so far below, and yet so much a part of me, even as I head back to my roots. It’s Memorial Day weekend and my brother will be picking me up at the airport and we will head for the grave sites of many family who were together with me at the Cathedral 30 years ago. Thirty years later, my parish families surprised me with the honor of a party, great food and laughter, smiles and well wishes. I think the only way I can really thank you is promise to do my best to continue to serve you as a priest and friend, for as long as the bishop will allow me to do so. After five years of seminary formation and thirty years experience, I am still surprised at how God calls each of us to serve Him in all kinds of ways. I am grateful for all

the blessings I have received by so many and know I am called to be a faithful steward of those blessings. Discover-ing stewardship as my way of life and the life of the Church was another surprise, not for a brief moment, but each day for the last thirteen years. It has defined my priesthood and the way I am called to serve the Church. I suspect it always will. Perhaps God’s most effective way to get our attention is to surprise us. Life is full of surprises and the best ones are those at the hands of the people I serve who were con-siderate enough to remember and celebrate with one of the “older” priests of the diocese who just so happens to be your pastor. I will never forget it. I guess surprises are just suppose to work that way.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION We have had three consecu-tive weeks of significant So-lemnities—Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, and now the Solem-nity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, better known by the name of Cor-pus Christi which translates from the Latin as the “Body of Christ.” Clearly this is a celebration which brings our focus on the Eucharist, which is at the ab-solute center of our liturgy, and at the core of our Catho-lic faith. We have mentioned many times that all revolves around the Eucharist when we receive the real Body and Blood of the Lord. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1324), “The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ The other sacraments, and indeed all eccle-siastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it.
