Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and Our Lady of

Loreto Parish PRAYER FOR PARISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

Lord God, You love us with an everlasting love, and You choose us to share Your love with others. We ask that You rekindle in our

hearts a new spirit of faith, of prayer and of reconcilia-tion. Inspire us to search out and find ways of bringing one another closer to You. We pray for all who form

our parish community, that we remain faithful to Your teaching, that we remain steadfast in our prayer, both personal and communal, that together with You and

the Holy Spirit, our parish may be renewed and trans-formed. All this we ask in the name of Jesus and

through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Please cut out and pray daily.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Friends,

This weekend at all Masses, speakers will talk about the Partners in Charity Appeal, which will be taken up at all Masses next weekend. This vital appeal provides a life-line for so many within our diocese and throughout Worcester County.

Our goal again this year is $50,000. We have surpassed it for the past few years and I’m confident, relying on your generosity that we, as a parish, can do it again.

At our most recent Parish Council meeting, we had a discussion about our music program here at the parish. The members seemed very supportive of the choir and appreciate their hard work, and I’m sure many of you do, too. However, I would like to enhance our program and I’ve asked John Morello to head a Music Ministry Com-mittee to make suggestions to me about ways our pro-gram can be improved and/or changes we need to make. Please feel free to speak with John or me if you and suggestions.

If there is anyone who plays a musical instrument and would like to be part of our program, we would welcome your assistance and participation as well.

We also need to establish a Communications Ministry in the parish so that we can connect more with each other through email and text. We need someone who can as-sist David Soares and Chester DiLeo with our parish website. Please see either one of them, or me, if you can help us in this area.

I want to thank the 136 donors who donated to the Lega-cy of Hope Campaign. These donors contributed and pledged an astounding total of $228,567.32, which amounts to approximately 58% of our goal of $394,000. As you know, the parish receives 40% back from monies donated. To date, the parish has received $31,000 of this money. As people pay on their pledges, the parish will receive 40% of that money. Many thanks to all of you who participated in this important campaign that benefits both the Diocese and the parish!!

Please be assured of my gratitude to and my remem-brance of all of you in my daily prayers!

Lenten blessings! Monsignor Pedone

ADULT FAITH FORMATION On Monday evenings several parish members and friends come together for Adult Faith Formation. We discuss and learn about our Catholic faith and real life issues and how we, as Catholics can and should respond to them as they affect us, our families, and our lives. We share our thoughts, our ideas, our fears and our hopes! Won’t you join us? You are all welcome! For more information call Lisa at the office at 508-753-5001.

The Third Sunday of Lent March 15, 2020

FEAST OF ST. JOSEPH

We have celebrated the Feast of Saint Joseph for many years and then we stopped. Brought back by popular de-mand, we will once again celebrate for Feast of Saint Jo-seph. This year our celebration will be held on Thursday, March 19. We will begin with a Mass at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner of pasta and baccala, salad, bread and of course ZEPPOLE. Tickets are $15 and must be bought in advance. Tickets are available after all Masses and also in the Parish Office Monday-Friday from 8 am-4pm

PARISH SCHOLARSHIPS

Years ago, Monsignor Gioacchino Maffei, the founding pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, started a scholarship fund for parishioners graduating from high school and going on to college. Again this year we are offering a limited number of scholarships for high school seniors who are parishioners and participate in parish activities, such as altar serving, being a lector teaching in our religious education program, assisting Joan D’Argenis in the parish’s youth program, among other things. Applications are now available on the ta-ble in the vestibule. These must be completed and re-turned no later than Thursday, April 30th, to the parish office to be eligible. Those wishing to donate to this scholarship fund are asked to see Monsignor Pedone.

Lenten Prayer

Lord, you remained in constant communion with God in prayer. Spending time with God is not something I am in the habit of doing every day. My life is too busy. When I list all the things I need to do, prayer is not at the top of the list. I make time to shop, to work out, to go out to eat, to be with friends and to watch my favorite television pro-gram. I know it is impossible to be a loving, kind, forgiv-ing and merciful person without a strong prayer life. Lord, slow me down so that I will take time to be with you in prayer. Help me to experience the joy and peace that come from a closer relationship with you. Nourish me with your daily bread of love and compassion. Amen Fr. Warren J. Savage

THE MIDPOINT OF LENT

Didn’t we begin the season of Lent with the best of in-tentions? Do we feel like nothing is going on? If so, can a six week journey be completed in the next few weeks? The answer is YES! It doesn’t take long for God, when we are ready.

Beginning again is possible when we have the desire for something real during Lent. Feeling guilty for not do-ing much about Lent won’t get us very far. What we need is a real expectation that God has something for us to hear, to learn, to change—and we need to be ready to listen.

Lent really begins when we can say: “Help me Lord! Help me to be honest with myself before you. Let me know your presence today. Help me face the challenges presented to me today. Give me freedom to make dif-ferent choices, act on the graces you give me, refrain from escaping but rather give myself to loving as you have loved me. Let’s give Lent a new start in the days ahead. God is offering us more than we can ask or even imagine.

Rest in Peace

DIOCESE OF WORCESTER REGULATIONS AND LITURGICAL NOTES

FOR LENT 2020

1. GUIDELINES FOR FAST AND ABSTINENCE Lenten fast and abstinence regulations for the Diocese of Worcester are as follows: • Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics fourteen (14) years of age and older on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. • Fasting is to be observed by all Catholics who are eighteen (18) years of age but not yet fifty nine (59) years of age on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. • Those who are bound to fast may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods be-tween meals is not permitted. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these prescribed Lenten penitential practices. 2. ASH WEDNESDAY The Order for the Blessing and Dis-tribution of Ashes normally takes place during the celebra-tion of Mass. However, when circumstances require, the blessing and distribution of ashes may take place during a Liturgy of the Word or other appropriate liturgical service. However, ashes may never be distributed apart from a litur-gical service. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and other lay persons may assist in the imposition of ashes when there is a true pastoral need. 3. RITE OF ELECTION The Rite of Election of Catechu-mens (those preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil) will be celebrated by Bishop McManus on Sunday, March 1st at 3:00 P.M. in Saint Paul's Cathedral. This celebration is among the mandatory rites of adult initiation, as the Bishop is the one who calls these catechumens in the name of the Church to the Easter sacraments. Online registration is available at: worcesterdiocese.org/rcia. Registration is due February 14. Baptized candidates are also welcome on March 1st to celebration the Rite of Calling the Candidates to Continuing Conversion. 4. LENTEN RITES FOR CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Scrutinies, celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, are mandatory for the elect who will be initiated at the Easter Vigil. A dispensation from the Bishop is required for any of the elect who miss a celebra-tion of a Scrutiny. If they were not anticipated during the catechumenate, Presentations of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer take place during the 3rd and 5th weeks of Lent. The celebration of the Optional Rites for Holy Saturday morning are also encouraged.
