The Rosary: Extraneous or Essential?
When I was growing up, I always viewed the rosary as something that older people practiced, a relic of a Catholicism long past. I never thought it would be something that would benefit me, let alone change my life. Yet it did. Many today see this devotion as dry and mechanical and would not ever consider trying it. Over the centuries, though, countless Popes, saints, famous and not-so-famous people have encountered the raw power of this simple devotion, and they were able to experience the miraculous in their own lives and in the world around them. For me, the rosary helped to nurture a profound and personal relationship with Jesus, in addition to helping me to navigate many challenges over the last 25 years of my life.
To pray the rosary is not complicated. There are five decades: One Our Father, ten Hail Mary’s and one Glory Be. You can say one or two decades to start and progress as needed. While you are praying these prayers, it is customary to meditate on a specific mystery of Jesus’ life. In addition, the rosary can be prayed anywhere and at any time. My favorite time is when I am driving in the car.
At times we all don’t feel like praying, yet as eating is beneficial for our bodies, constant prayer is what helps us to see God working in our lives and around us. The rosary helps us to develop “eyes” to see like God. At times, while praying the rosary, we may not feel anything. Over time, though, it will begin to change your life.
As an easy way to begin, I would like to suggest downloading the Relevant Radio App on your smartphone. Once downloaded, it gives the option of praying the rosary with you. It also provides all the prayers and meditations that you will need to get started. If you don’t have a smart phone, consider Googling, “How to pray the rosary.” There are many free resources online to get you going.
Consider this: If you want help with the stresses in your life, help with obstacles that you are having a difficult time facing on your own, or just want to go deeper in your relationship with God, the rosary will not disappoint. If you approach it with an open mind, God will surprise you! Fr. Kevin

Holy Communion is available after every Sunday 11 am Masses. Please “drive up” to the Prayer Garden side of the church and receive the Eucharist from 11:45 am to 12:15 pm every Sunday. Drive up to the tent, receive in your car and feel free to then park for a moment in one of the parking spots for a prayer. Confession will be offered outdoors on the Prayer Garden side of the church every Friday from 12 pm to 1 pm. No need to get out of your car, just drive-up to the tent and roll down your window.

Middle School Religious Education Registration
(Grades 6—8 ) Registration is OPEN for 2020/2021 on the Corpus Christi website at https://corpuschristi.org/reregistration. Classes next year will be offered on Sundays at 8:00 am, 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm for all Middle School grades. Classes will be filled as registrations are received. Children should be registered in the grade they are attending in school. Baptismal Certificates are needed for those registering for first grade and for children new to the program.

You have likely heard the expression “the third rail” as denoting some sensitive topic. What does it mean? Technically, the term derives from an additional rail placed alongside regular track that supplies electric current to trains in some systems. At 600 volts, and always being “live.” this rail is obviously something to avoid touching.
Informally, “the third rail” is used to denote an issue considered by politicians to be too controversial for them to discuss. An “untouchable” one that may cause same politi-cian to suffer politically. A well-known example is Social Security. Any meddling here could prove disastrous, especially when addressing our dependent senior citizens, a politician has to be wary.
In the spiritual realm, one might say that forgiveness of others is a “third rail” topic for a lot of Christians. We all know that Jesus called for it to be an essential part of following Him. We realize that we should practice it toward anyone who has offended us in the myriad ways that people can. We admit that such a thing is easier said than done. So a homily on the topic might lead us to think: “Talk about something else, Father, and thank you very much.” But preach on it he must.
Have you ever bargained with the Lord this way: “Listen, dear Jesus, You don’t understand. I bent over backwards in friendly outreach to that person. I actually spoiled them with my trust and affection, yet they went ahead and betrayed me behind my back. Really, now, must I forgive them?” I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Jesus reply with one word: “Judas.”
Sure, there is injustice galore in our world. Its values are topsy turvey with what they should be. Sinners succeed where others fail. In Scriptural terms, “evil has its hour.” That evil comes to us in ways often small and unnoticed.
I know people struggle with this matter in the confessional. They tell me stories of the betrayal and hurt, and then they add: “I cannot forgive.” I try to comfort the penitent that they may be confusing their feelings with the objective act. They have to will forgiveness for the offender as Jesus directs us. He might add “Remember that I called Judas ‘friend’ right before his blistering kiss of betrayal.”
When we are guilty of betraying Jesus through our sins, we can be consoled by the words of today’s Responsorial: “The Lord is slow to anger and rich in compassion.” Would that we could act the same!
No doubt, it is a burden to live with hurt. It is a true cross. But carry it we must, if only to understand just a little of the weight of the Cross Jesus carried. Trust always that He knows the pain we have and He will not only refresh us here below, but lift it away in His heaven to come.
A man named John Oglethorpe, a member of Parliament and the founder of the colony of Georgia, happened one day to be talking to John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist church. Oglethorpe boasted “I never forgive anyone.” To which Mr. Wesley sagely replied: “Then, Sir, I hope that you never sin.”

But it’s Romanos the Melodist who, in the 500s,wrote the “Hymn of Mary at the Cross.” In it, Jesus reveals to hismother the redemptive power of his suffering—plus, her role asour intercessor. He says: “Run, Mother, announce to all that ‘Bysuffering he strikes the one who hates Adam, and as victor he iscoming.’” How can Our Mother pray for you today?

Some rather understandably denied the faith in order tosurvive, but when persecutions lifted, asked to return. Their desirefor reconciliation caused an uproar. Pope Cornelius faced strongchallenges because he believed they should be allowed to returnafter a period of penance. His friend and brother bishop, thelearned Cyprian, sided with him in this decision. Theircompassionate response prevailed. Both men ended up givingtheir lives for the faith as Cornelius died in exile in 253 and
Cyprian was martyred under the Emperor Valerian in 258.Follow the lead of these two early Christians and let compassionhave the last word.

Take acue from this brilliant saint and contemplate whether you need tomake changes to be living well by Christian standards. It’s nevertoo late to get right with God.

The Jewish celebration of RoshHashana recalls the significance of honey, especiallyremembering how God cared for the Israelites in the desert byfeeding them manna, which tasted like “wafers made withhoney.” On this first day of Rosh Hashana, let us, with ourJewish friends, wish one another a good, sweet year ahead,trusting in the providence of God.

In the doctrine of the Mystical Body, allsuffering is given meaning by Christ’s. His Passion means that noone agonizes in vain, that all is redeemed. Consider a gift offinancial support to an organization like Catholic Charities, whichhelps alleviate the suffering of the refugee, the hungry, thetrafficked person.
