Remember that tener is an irregular -er verb that is conjugated as follows:

Notice the irregular yo form . . .

. . . and the changes that occur in the stem of the second-person singular and third persons.

Tengo muchos amigos. I have a lot of friends. Tienes que asistir a clase.

You have to attend class.

There are other common expressions that use tener where English uses the verb to be. Note that many of these refer

to things we might feel, such as hunger, thirst, cold, etc. ¿Tienes hambre? Are you hungry? No, pero tengo frío. No, but I’m cold. Tenemos prisa. We’re in a hurry.

Let’s look at some illustrations of these expressions.

Mucho vs. mucha

tener calor (m.) Tengo mucho calor. tener cuidado (m.) El doctor tiene mucho cuidado. tener frío (m.) Alicia tiene mucho frío. tener miedo (m.) Juan tiene mucho miedo. tener sueño (m.) Papá tiene mucho sueño. tener hambre (f.) Tenemos mucha hambre. tener prisa (f.) Tenemos mucha prisa. tener razón (f.) Tienes mucha razón.

Mucho or mucha, depending on the gender of the noun they modify, are used as intensifiers with the tener expressions.

tener sed (f.) Paco y Luz tienen mucha sed.
