http://www.mylearningplan.com. Items of interest are on pp 8, 17, 30 & 31. PDs of interest to
librarians will include but are not limited to:
7/14 Google Drive and Docs Suite
7/22 Apple Educator in Watertown
7/23-24, 8/13-14 - How Inquiry Design Model
7/29, 8/12 - Librarians and SS Framework - the goal is to identify resources and texts to
support Framework. Marla would like to host this in a library, to facilitate reviewing materials.
Round the Table:
Librarian Presentations, summarizing 2015 NYLA/SSL Conference in Tarrytown:
Molly Clark- KeyNote Speaker included Jennifer LaGarde, LMS/Instructional Technology, New
Hanover County Schools, Wilmington, NC. There was a Zombie project, a book talk with the
public, Librarians year long program – kids on website. The Graphic Novel Course with the Art
teacher was good for the high school level with intense courses for credit. Molly will be sending
the links out to all the high school librarians. On the last day of the conference there was a
“playing with paper”, a makerspace activity. Some of these activities are silent, which is nice and
was tested with 6th graders. There was also “Social Media Bingo” with a prizes including dinner
with Steven Kellogg, author and illustrator of over 100 children’s books since 1967, currently
residing in Connecticut. Molly won the dinner with Steven!
Serena Waldron – The book talk presentation was very enjoyable with great videos. The kids
were able to do an “end of the year premier” on public and school websites. Serena is going to
talk to the Book Mobile to see if this activity can be offered next year. The makerspace
“Playground with Paper” was simple, fun, and uses up a lot of time. There are helpful hints
included to keep down frustration and keep the activity moving along.
Social Studies Framework conference Summaries from attending Oswego County School
Librarians
KeyNote Speaker Included S.G. Grant - SUNY Binghamton
Mary Alice Brunell: Significant shift in the new Framework - being informed citizens. There was
a focus on career, college, and civic education. For Librarians this means an emphasis on
inquiry driven teaching, critical thinking, resource evaluation. She described one of the sample
units presented - prove that the Holocaust actually happened. Then write a letter to Iran’s
president citing evidence for the Holocaust. Other sessions emphasized Primary Source
Documents
Rachel Allen - valued the chance to learn from Social Studies experts. Her Soc. Studies Dept.
knows she attended, and is expecting that will spur collaboration. One of the highlights:
“Reading Like a Historian” Joel Breakstone. Students learn History by dissecting historical
artifacts, documents. Also attended “Moving Beyond DBQ”: students answer questions
prompted by the artifacts contained in “Memory Boxes”. World Digital Library - international
version of the Library of Council.
Corry - attended from an Elementary level - anticipating that teachers will be resistant to adding
social studies to ELA modules. There will be a time crunch. Corry expects that her role will be
to assist teachers in finding time to add social studies content. Maria Prattico (Millard Hawk
Primary) is working to align ELA with new Social Studies Inquiry lessons. Marla noted that
summer workshops will also be focusing on that. NYC has done a scope and sequence - avail
online.
Marla- there are also examples on the CiTi website.
Nicole - attended the Inquiry workshops. Her follow-up was to create Time Capsules for each of
the decades, containing teacher-selected artifacts to prompt student questions. Nicole
recommended AdViews (find it in iTunes U) from Duke University, which has cataloged
commercials from the 60s 70s and 80s. Nicole also attended Sugarman Inquiry Method: using
a set of clues (photos, primary source docs), students ask yes/no questions to try to figure out
what the clues are describing. Also recommended was Paul Bogush - 15 assessments that
don’t suck. (now up to 24).
Kristy Ryan - Teacher Center Grant to write Inquiry Based Social Studies units.
Jonathan Smith (Phoenix HS)and Kristy (Phoenix MS) each worked with SS teachers from their
buildings. One other teacher on special assignment worked with an additional MS SS Teacher.
Kristy’s project - Middle Ages. Students researched a role. There was the culminating activity -
re-create life in medieval times, with each child coming to school in character for an entire day.
Roles included King, Queen, Jester, etc. Another assignment Teacher’s/SS Teacher project -
how does government affect me? It was noted that this particular teacher really struggled with
the inquiry process, finding it difficult to let go.
At the high school level there was the - Holocaust project. Final project - Kid Blog - writing as
people who did NOT speak up against the Holocaust as it happened.
Grants: NYLA has begun a new dues structure that allows libraries and library systems to join
as an organization and add additional associate memberships for a reduced rate of $75. The
advantage to doing this would be to show an increase in the number of NYLA members and
hopefully have a greater impact with the legislature. The disadvantage is that the “company
name” is the Oswego School Library System and not your individual school. However we can
add the school name as the first line of the address. Marla asked the council to approve this
expense, which would be in the neighborhood of $4,000. This was unanimously approved.
Other: Every year we are required by NYS Department of Library Development to have you
evaluate us. It is a simple survey that will only take a few minutes. Please complete as soon as
possible. The anonymous survey is found at: http://goo.gl/forms/POq83Io8jo
Please Return Both Surveys by June 12th.
SAVE THE DATE – NOVEMBER 19, - GREATER CNY SCHOOL LIBRARY SYSTEMS

Crea ng Standards-aligned, Forma ve andSumma ve Assessment in the LOTE Classroom
CiTi is holding a full-day professional development workshop for all LOTE teachers. NYSAA Regional Sample Evidence Set Building 2015
For the 2014-2015 NYSAA administra on, SED provided sample verifying evidence in the form of student worksamples and data collec on sheets in ELA, mathema cs, science and social studies. The samples demonstratehow verifying evidence can be designed to assess a student with a severe disability using extensions forEnglish language arts and mathema cs and using Alternate Grade Level Indicators (AGLIs) for science and social studies. This was a great start, however, it did not include all of the assessment tasks covered undereach extension or AGLI. This summer we would like to collabora vely con nue this work and begin to createassessment task samples to fi ll in SED’s gaps. On July 1st, July 8th and July 9th we will be hos ng work groupstasked with developing assessment tasks based on the extensions and AGLI’s outlined in this current year’sNYSAA frameworks. We invite all teachers working with this popula on to join us in this task. All par cipantsare asked to bring a laptop/iPad to work from as well as any other materials they may fi nd useful.
