Wang Yung-ching, 1917 -2008, a tea farmer’s son with only an elementary school education set up a rice store with his two brothers in his early 20s, then established the Formosa Plastic Corp. in 1954 with funding from U.S aid program. From that time onwards, he started his business warfare and turn his Formosa Plastics Group into Taiwan’s biggest and most profitable manufacturing conglomerate.

Now, the group has more than 40 companies which include a number of petrochemical and plastic enterprise on the mainland and employs nearly 100,000 people. Forbes listed Wang as the island's second-wealthiest person in 2008, with a personal fortune estimated at U$6.8 billion.

Known widely as the “God of Management," and “ God of Business”. Wang expanded his plastics and petrochemicals empire and diversified into electronics, cosmetics, hospitals and car manufacturing.

A strong proponent of closer economic ties with rival China, Wang invested in power plants and plastics factories on the Chinese mainland. Formosa Plastics also set up chemical companies in the U.S. and owns several oil wells and properties rich in natural gas in Texas.

“One of the reason for Wang Yung-ching’s success was his devotion to charity- always quietly. He actually donated at least multi-millions in NT$ for different kind of philanthropy projects which included in the field of

education, health care and natural disaster.”

“ President Ma Ying-jeou saluted the extraordinary contributions that Taiwan’s “ God of Business” , Wang Yung-ching, made to the countries.”

“ Wang Yung-ching simple but innovative ways helped him to sell more rice, bricks and timber compared to the competitors. Just as importantly, they helped to reduce the number of bad debts he incurred. He built

on such simple but effective business tactics throughout his career and earned himself such nicknames as the “god of management” and “King Midas” in Taiwan. “

“ Wang Yung-ching (1917-2008); From a Rice Shop to a $7Billion Fortune, Management ‘God’ Built Formosa Plastics. ”

“ Terry Guo, The founder of Foxconn Group pays homage to Wang Yung-ching. Terry Guo knelt before Wang’s altar and kowtowed. Guo said: I have learnt a great deal from the Formosa Plastics founder and in

fact, he is my stern father.”

“ Yung-ching contributed mightily to Taiwan’s prosperity and his operations in Taiwan’s petrochemicals is close to 5% of the country’s gross national product.”
