This is an exciting time for your student and for you, especially if this is your first to go off to college!

Please take some time to read the Oregon Tech Parent Guide so you can familiarize yourself with all that we offer students. We take great pride in the relationships the faculty and staff develop with students, both in the classroom and out. You, too, have a role in your student’s success as a partner with us. Please remember, however, that college is all about learning self-advocacy and responsibility; let the

student be accountable, while you provide the gentle guidance along the way.

This guide provides descriptions of many services available to students to assist them in navigating the transition into college, to help them overcome the challenges they may face through their college experience, and to ultimately send them on with a degree in hand. The offices in the guide include: housing, dining, student health, campus life, academic success resources, and more. Please encourage your student to utilize the many resources available, and understand that we are here for students and you.

Campus housing offers students on-campus living.

The Residence Hall double room is two people living in a furnished room, with shower and bathroom facilities down the hall. Single rooms are also available. This building is the least expensive option, and popular with our first-year students who are looking to make friends and find support as they begin their collegiate experience.

The Village apartments offer each student a single bedroom living in a four-person, furnished apartment.

Each living community has student staff as a great resource! Student staff members offer activities and help ensure the safety and security of on-campus housing. They are available to help with roommate or other issues your student may face.

In the Housing Office, students receive assistance with personal matters, consult with professional staff, make suggestions for improvements, work out financial details, and receive assistance for a variety of housing-related concerns and interests.

cAmPUS DINING»»»»»»Dining on campus provides the social experience essential to campus life. It gives your student the opportunity to gather with friends, take study breaks, hang out, relax, and unwind after a hard day of classes and activities.

Oregon Tech is proud to offer exciting and innovative dining programs. Here you will find great food, honest values, and a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy it all. Our menus are designed to satisfy diverse tastes and nutritional needs and are available for dining in or takeout.

Simple Servings is our newest dining program, and has been customized to accommodate specialty diets or satisfy diners who prefer to eat plain and simple foods.

Our main dining area, The Marketplace Café, is located on the second floor of the College Union, adjacent to the Residence Hall. Dining services are also provided at The Bistro in the College Union, Hootie’s Espresso in Dow, Duffie’s Espresso in Purvine and The Night Owl Snack Bar in the Residence Hall.

The easy and convenient way to dine on campus is with the swipe of an ID card. It works just like a debit card (without the fees).

Information about the meal plans available to students living on campus can be found on the Campus Dining website at www.oit.edu/dining. Commuter students are also able to purchase a meal plan or put money (Owl Bucks) on their student ID cards for use at any of the campus dining venues.

For information, please contact the Dining Office at (541) 885-1076 or [email protected]. ■

We also provide for those with special dietary needs through our allergen-free dining program “Simple Servings.”

A few things to keep in mind when trying to understand Financial Aid:

The EFC (Expected Family Contribution) that you get by completing the FAFSA application is simply used to determine eligibility for need-based financial aid. It is the amount that the Department of Education has estimated that you and your student can contribute to their education. It is not an amount that you are expected to pay to the university. Cost of Attendance is a budget number that financial aid uses to estimate what it will cost a student to attend Oregon Tech for the year. Financial Aid does not handle the billing of student accounts, only the application of financial aid.

While we enjoy the opportunity to assist you, due to federal privacy laws we cannot discuss your student’s file or account without written consent from the student. They are ultimately responsible for managing their financial aid experience!

Some things to remember

Students need to file their FAFSA each year, on January 1 or as soon after as possible, at www.fafsa.gov. Parents and students may estimate their income information as accurately as possible in order to complete the form and submit their FAFSA by the Oregon Tech priority deadline (March 1). Income and tax information can be updated later if needed. Also, please remind your students to respond promptly to all information requests sent by the Financial Aid Office. Students should apply for scholarships; check out possible scholarships at www.oit.edu/scholarships. Oregon Tech Foundation scholarship applications are due March 1. Students should read all information about financial aid published on the Oregon Tech website or sent to their Oregon Tech email.

budgeting

Teach your son or daughter about developing a budget. What are the expenses and how much money is coming in? Reinforce the concept of spending less than one earns (or brings in). Will the refund check in the fall last though the first term (three months)? Are additional funds needed to cover expenses?

mATTERSmONEy$$$$$

be proactive and talk to your student about budgeting and planning.

Page 15: Oregon Institute of Technology 2015 Guide For Parents

www.universityparent.com/oit 15

Student Debt

According to Project Student Debt (projectonstudentdebt.org), 69% of the class of 2013 had student loans and they carried an average of $28,400 in debt.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a college degree remains the best route to finding a job in this tight market. Unemployment rates for college graduates are ½ of what they are for individuals without a college degree and lifelong earnings can be over $800,000 more. If you need to borrow to get through school, federal student loans are the safest way to borrow.

Managing money can be stressful for students. The more informed they are, the better prepared they will be to handle their expenses. Encourage them to take advantage of web tools such as budget calculators and spending trackers (links on Oregon Tech Financial Aid website, www.oit.edu/faid and finaid.org). Also, encourage them to keep track of their borrowing, complete financial awareness counseling at www.studentloans.gov, and take advantage of financial literacy activities at school. ■

how much does your student plan on borrowing? Do they know the federal loan limits? Do they know the interest rate on the loans they are taking out? Do they have an idea of their monthly payment once they graduate?

The Student Success Center (SSC) is the central office for a variety of academic support and services that include TOp, Career Services, Disability Services, and Testing & peer Consulting (Tutoring) Services.

Students are encouraged to seek services early on and often during their academic career. Each area is explained in greater detail within this guide. You can find more information about the SSC at www.oit.edu/ssc.

Tech Opportunities program (TOp)

TOP is funded by a federal grant and provides services to increase academic achievement, retention, and graduation rates of students who are the first in their families to complete college, low income, and/or students with disabilities.

TOP is founded on research-based “Best Practices” and provides: a September Bridge program for first-time freshmen living on campus; effective tutoring and mentoring services; intensive academic advising; and a host of academic supports. TOP also has limited grant funding for active participants who are in good academic standing and meet some additional qualifications. TOP can be reached at (541) 885-1125 or at www.oit.edu/top.

Career Services

Career Services are available to all Oregon Tech students and alumni and strive to help students develop and achieve career goals. Services include: individual career advising; workshops and classroom presentations on resume writing and job interviewing; job search and applying to graduate school; on-campus employer recruitment; Career Fairs; career resource materials and job listings; and a resume referral service.

»»»STUDENT

Career Services also coordinates the Student Employment Service, which provides part-time employment for students both on and off campus with local employers. Positions are available through the College Work-Study program or through regular employment.

Current students can access on- and off-campus job and internship postings online through CSO: www.myinterfase.com/oit/student/home.aspx.

cENTER»»»SUccESS

Students will want to become acquainted with Career Services as early as possible; early and frequent use of Career Services is correlated with job search success after graduation.

For information about career related topics, check out the Career Services Blog: oitcareerservices.blogspot.com or visit us at www.oit.edu/career. ⊲

SSC breakfast Club

The Student Success Center (SSC) Breakfast Club is held the first Wednesday of each month during fall, winter, and spring terms. Thanks to the collaboration of Student Affairs Departments and other sponsors, the SSC Breakfast Club is a great place for good food and lively conversation. These are very popular and a great way to connect with campus resources.

Academic Support and Success resources

Many academic and personal support and success resources are available at Oregon Tech. The Student Success Center (SSC) houses Peer Consulting (also known as Tutoring) Services and Testing Services, which are available for all students. Peer Consulting Services offers assistance in a variety of subjects; hours of availability vary by term and students simply need to log in to www.oit.edu/tutoring to see a schedule and set up a peer consulting session.

DISAbILITy ServICeS

Academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and program modifications are provided to qualified students with a disability to enable these students to have an equal opportunity to participate in any program, course, activity, or service offered by the University. An equal opportunity means an opportunity to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to similarly-situated individuals without a disability.

It is the responsibility of the student with a disability to inform the University that an accommodation is needed. A variety of accommodations may be available. More information about Disability Services can be found on the web at www.oit.edu/ds.

Page 19: Oregon Institute of Technology 2015 Guide For Parents

www.universityparent.com/oit 19

Peer Consulting Services will work with all students seeking assistance to succeed. Subjects such as math, writing, anatomy, and physiology are just a few of the subjects regularly available to any Oregon Tech student. Other academic and success workshops such as preventing procrastination, establishing a study routine, and finals preparation may be offered throughout each term and are open to all students. Study group facilitation is also available for all students.

The SSC is also the home of Testing Services, which offers standardized testing along with community and distance testing for students. If your student is taking a distance class and needs a proctor, Testing Services is the place to go. ⊲

by encouraging your student to use campus resources such as all of the services of the Student Success Center, or to connect in other ways, you are helping him or her choose to increase his or her success.

Page 20: Oregon Institute of Technology 2015 Guide For Parents

Oregon Institute of Technology20

If your student has been ill or absent due to an athletic event, emergency, or other reason, he or she can speak with the faculty about making up a missed exam, quiz, or video in Testing Services. If your student is thinking about graduate school and needs to take an entrance exam, he or she should check with Testing Services.

Again, there are many resources for students at Oregon Tech. By encouraging your student to use campus resources such as all of the services of the Student Success Center, or to connect in other ways, you are helping him or her choose to increase his or her success. The SSC staff will work with any student to provide supplemental advising and mentoring as well as general support. If you have any questions regarding any of the services of the Student Success Center, please contact the SSC at (541) 885-1791 or (541) 851-5179. You may also email us at [email protected].

CLASSeS FOr ACADeMIC SuCCeSS

The staff of the Integrated Student health Center (IShC) is committed to providing quality and convenient care to students.

The ISHC provides primary health care, counseling, and general wellness services and is staffed by a physician, a certified nurse specialist, a registered nurse, counselors, and a health educator. ISHC contracts with a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a massage therapist to bring additional services into the center. The ISHC staff is honored to be able to attend to the overall health and well-being of your student.

All students taking 6 or more on-campus credits are assessed the student health fee. This fee covers the majority of services provided in the ISHC, including office visits with the medical and counseling staff and the health educator. Students taking fewer than six credits may still be eligible to access services through the ISHC and would need to contact the ISHC to opt in and pay the fee.

Students can make appointments by calling the ISHC at (541) 885-1800. We make every effort to schedule appointments on the same day as the student calls. ⊲

health education

ISHC’s health educator works to educate the campus community about a variety of topics pertinent to college students. Multiple programs are coordinated by the health educator, including the Healthy Active Challenge, Cancer Vigil, the Great American Smoke Out, Safe Spring Break, and AIDS Awareness. The health educator also works individually with students on issues such as weight loss and smoking cessation.

However, parents should be aware that state and federal confidentiality laws prevent the staff from disclosing any information about students who have received services at the ISHC. Although they may not be able to reveal any information about students who use the center’s services, the staff is willing to receive input from parents about their concerns. ■

We welcome any comments or questions parents may have about the center’s services.

Oregon Tech is concerned with the privacy of your student’s records.

OREGON TEch

PRIvAcySTUDENT

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) initially gave you and your student the rights to access and review your student’s academic records in elementary and high school. Now that your student is attending Oregon Tech, FERPA rights transfer ownership of the records directly to the student.

According to FERPA, students attending college are considered adults and given the right to determine who will receive any information regarding their academic records.

While parents often have a vested interest in their student’s academic progress, written consent is required in order to have access to a student’s records. Further information regarding FERPA can be found at www.oit.edu/registrar or by contacting the Registrar’s Office at (541) 885-1300 or at [email protected]. ■
