EDITORIAL

I n India, the beginnings of spring and autumn are considered to be important junctions of climatic and solar influences that are chosen as sacred opportunities for the worship of the

Divine Mother Durga - a special characteristic of the Indian Culture. It is the invoking of ‘Shakti’ – the sublime, subtle, ultimate and absolute creative divine energy. This kind of worship dates back to prehistoric times before the dawn of Vedic age. In India, we celebrate Navaratri five times a year. Vasanta Navaratri, Ashadha Navaratri, Sharad Navaratri and Paush or Magha Navaratri and of these, Sharad Navaratri and Vasanta Navaratri are considered the most important. Sharad Navaratri is also called “Maha Navaratri” (the Great Navaratri) and is celebrated in the 'Pratipada' (first day) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashvina and also celebrated during Sharad Ritu (beginnings of September and October). For nine days, they dress up in their best clothes, decorate their houses and neighborhood and sing and dance together. People express their joy and gratitude to Ma Durga and worship Her. This year, the students from the IBDP, came up with a brilliant idea of incorporating Navaratri celebrations as a part of their CAS activity to raise funds for charity. These young adults arranged the event very efficiently with a lot of gusto on Friday 11th October 2013. It was a very successful event. Except for 22 students, all the students from grade 1 to 12 participated and enjoyed dancing, and feasted on delicious dishes served for lunch. Right from conceiving this event, planning and execution our IBDP students were on their toes, with the teachers handling the CAS activity holding their hands at each step. Our students have started a “Culture Club” under the guidance of their CAS coordinator and teachers. This is the first event after the club is formed. Well done! Congratulations my dear children for all the efforts you put in, I am really proud of you! Our young leaders in the making, your hearts filled with compassion for the lesser fortunate, along with eagerness to help others - you all have exhibited the true IB spirit. Every rupee you have raised for charity through this event is priceless! Last, but not the least, I would like to thank all our parents, who are always with us in whatever good cause we undertake. Special thanks to parents of Malav Shah and Vinit Gokhru from IBDP1 for their contribution of Rs 2500 /- each and encouraging our students. God bless you all !

Teachers as Students: IB Workshop hosted at RBK International

A t RBK, we believe in life-long learning. Even as professionals and teachers, there is always something new to learn and to be used to hone our skills. All day this

coming Saturday and Sunday, twenty-five PYP teachers, (including Dr. Arundhati and I) will become students! Ms Anjalika Sharma, a PYP trainer for the IB Organization, will be coming to lead a workshop on the PYP program. One aspect that defines the PYP over other elementary school programs is its focus on the child and what type of student we would like him or her to become: inquirers, communicators, balanced, thinkers, knowledgeable, principled, courageous, caring and reflective. A lot of hard work and many hours of preparation has already been made by Ms. Paminder, PYP Coordinator and all the primary teachers so that now during the workshop, through collaboration, and learning and sharing tools and methods we will reflect on how best to promote the development of the Learner Profile in students of every age.

Baking is so much fun! Yum!

Celebrate with Yellow!

O n 25 Sep Ms.Vrinda had come to

K2 B as a guest speaker to talk about

the process of baking as their ongoing

U.O.I. is community. She gave an informative

talk on the topic and also taught how to bake

cakes and cookies.

O n 27 Sep the preprimary celebrated yellow day. The kids came dressed in yellow dressess and also brought yellow

objects for a show and tell activity in the class. They named as many things as they could in yellow, counted yellow objects and also shared their knowledge about yellow with their friends. It was a bright and cheery celebration for them.

O n the 9th of October, I was more than thrilled to compere the assembly, which took me back on my trip to Hyderabad. I felt nostalgic …..Recalling all the fun we had! I am sure so did Aditi Bhatnagar, Gr 6 who spoke about her grade trip to Silvasa. Indeed, it was fun with learning! While

we reminisced, Gr 9 Rajaram Ramesh presented his collation of the photographs about the different activities conducted on both the trips! Like every year, LEARNER PROFILE CERTIFICATES were issued to the students who displayed various learner profile traits on the MYP trips! This year’s awardees are Rajaram Ramesh of Gr 9 and Rushi Vyas of Gr 6 for being PRINCIPLED too and Veer Sanghavi of Gr 6 for displaying a CARING attitude! I was then joined by Niti Majethia Gr 10 and Neeraja Chemburkar Gr 9 who shared their recent experience of the creative writing event “CONFLUENCE”, held at the Singapore International School, Mumbai. Our school bagged the trophy for the First Position! Neeraja Chemburkar bagged the First Prize and Niti Majethia was issued a Certificate of Participation. A proud moment for all of us! This was not the end of the achievements. The pride continued! Every year THE INSTITUTE FOR PROMOTION OF MATHEMATICS conducts THE ALL INDIA OPEN MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATIONS. Varun Badrinarayan, Om Doshi, Prisha Sheth, Veer Sanghavi, Varun Billa, Pronay Mukerjee, Jaimik Ramjiyani & Asmita Sonajkar all from Gr 6, Pranav Lakhan & Yash Gantti from Gr 7 with Nirantaka Ramjiyani and Aaryan Pandit from Gr 8 were awarded THE CERTIFICATES OF MERIT, sitting for these examinations. Varun Badrinarayan ranked 141st out of 5206 candidates all over India and Om Doshi ranked 485th. Varun Badrinarayan also was awarded a cheque for Rs.150! With pride I announced these achievements! I AM A WINNER!

D uring the assembly this Wednesday morning, my homeroom

teacher Ms Swati Joshi called me to sit in the front rows. I

love awards ceremony and this was no different. I was

thrilled to know I was getting my certificate and prize money for IPM

examinations. When I heard my name being called out, I was just

excited! I walked to the stage with my head up, with pride! I received

the certificate and cheque of Rs.150 from the Management

Representative, Dr Arundhati Hoskeri and our Principal Mr Edward

Robinson. They shook hands with all the winners, congratulated us and

even clicked photographs with us!

After the assembly, while returning to class, we were congratulated by

one and all! This day is important to me!

MY REFLECTION ON STAGE PERFORMANCE

O n 24th August, Aditya, Siddharth, Aditi, Yusra and I had gone to Jamnabai Narsee International

School with Mr. Felix and Mrs. Rashmi. We had to perform our rendition of two Reggae and

Blues songs, in Rock style. The songs our band had practiced were “One Love” and “Stereo

hearts”. Aditya played the electric guitar, Siddharth played the bass guitar, Aditi sang, Yusra rapped and

sang, and I played the piano. We were the first to perform. I was a little skeptical about getting even

3rd place in the competition, because after performing, everyone in the band had noticed mistakes. For

instance, the electric guitar was not plugged in properly to the amplifier during our first song, a rendition of

the song “One Love”. When I heard that we were 3rd in the competition, I was very surprised. According to

the people in the audience that came to us, “Stereo hearts” was played really well. Overall, I had a

wonderful experience. This achievement, to me, is a source of motivation for me to improve my piano

playing skills.
