La semaine de la francophonie

L ast week, RBK MYP level celebrated its first Semaine de la francophonie. Floor 3 was abuzz with

French activities.

Monday students-had to map countries in the world where

French is spoken; To their surprise, they learned that French is spoken in

over 50 countries!

Tuesday was French music day as RBK rocked to the music of French

Canadian, Robert Charlebois, the Eccentric singer Philippe Katherine,

the French Icon Édith Piaf, the former French first lady, Carla Bruni.

But the most popular song that even made its way to PYP wasCoup de

boule written by Sébastien et Emmanuel Lipszyc. Meanwhile in the

music room, M. Félix played Creole music to his grade 7-9 students,

they discussed French influences and played a game of general

knowledge of France.

Mme L.M. dancing with grade 3

students to Coup de boule!

At Wednesday Assembly, students

were introduced to the American

Hallowe‟en. French Canadians are

particularly fond of this tradition. Dr.

Jacques, Mme L.M.‟s husband, who

claims to be a master pumpkin carver,

initiated students to the « art » of pumpkin carving while Rashmi Ma‟am

supervised. The certificate for best Hallowe‟en poster went to 6th grader, Veer. Félicitations Veer!! In the

afternoon, students made Hallowe‟en masks. On Thursday students discovered that French Canada has many

festivals:The tulip festival in the Canadian Capital Ottawa; the world‟s biggest Winter Carnival held in

Quebec City and finally La fête des Acadiens, in New Brunswick Canada. The day ended in the canteen

when Mme. L.M. showed students how to make crêpes.

Friday Grade 6 / 7 students dressed up in their Hallowe‟en costumes for Bâton ou Bonbon. Ghouls visited

all the MYP teachers and even ventured down to the Principal‟s office.

Stay tuned next March 2014 for the

Int ernat iona l DAY of La

francophonie.

SPORTS DAY

A cademic learning and Sports Education actually, complement each other. They are the two sides of

the same coin. A healthy and strong body is not possible without sports. All our degrees and

achievements will be of no use without a good physique and healthy personality. When we are

physically active, our brain is active and it gives our brain a wakeup call to work more.

OUR WEDNESDAY ASSEMBLY THAT WENT BY…………

O n Wednesday, 11th December 2013, our

assembly was a part of the French Week

celebrations! Every one enjoyed it because

some carved pumpkins, while the others

answered questions or received certificates.

The Science Quiz Competition was held on

Tuesday, 10th December 2013.

Results:

Topaz: POSITION 1

Ruby: POSITION 2

Emerald: POSITION 3

Sapphire: POSITION 4

Certificates were given away by the IBDP

Cocoordinator, Ms Kinnari Shah and the team of

Science Teachers! Well done winners and thank you

science teachers for dedicating so much of your

precious time in making this event a grant success!

Inaddition, one of our French teachers, Ms. Diane

came on stage to talk about Halloween and how it is

not a French festival but a French – Canadian

Festival. She talked about the different countries where

French is spoken as a first, second or and an official language. Later, we had an activity; she invited

some of the students come on stage, for the pumpkin carving activity. Ms Diane‟s husband, Dr Jack

volunteered for the activity.

Dr. Jack showed and explained the students how to carve it. It took a lot of time to carve, as you have

to be very patient. Ms Diane also told us about her experiences of pumpkin carving with her family.

Even Mr Robert told us his experiences about carving pumpkins, and how he was very impatient. To

end the assembly she told of the event coming up for the „La Semaine de la Francophonie‟ and what

had already been done. I had lots of fun during the assembly and I hope even the others enjoyed it as

much as I did it.

Joyeux Hallowe’en!

FINALS FOR SPELLINC COMPETITION

A s we had been selected as one of the finalists for Spellinc Competition, escorted by Ms.

Swati Joshi on 10th of December, Gr 7 Pranav Lakan, and I went to the „to compete in

the Mumbai Finals. On reaching there, we saw a throng of of students waiting outside the

gate. After an antagonizing wait of roughly half an hour, we were finally allowed to register in a

hall upstairs. After the opening ceremony and a brief explanation of the rules and regulations, we

took our seats in the auditorium. The first round was writing-based, which was a relief as I was

terrified of going and speaking on stage. It was divided into two rounds– straightforward spelling

and unscrambling anagrams. The spelling round was challenging with words like doyenne and

pugnacious. After the spelling portion (in which we had to correctly write down 20 words) we

moved on to the anagram round.

Before we started, the host gave us an important clue – all the words were based on cars and

travel M.s/, Renault being one of the partners. At the end of that round, our sheets were collected

and we were treated to a quick snack. After that, the students of Fine Arts staged short skits

designed to teach us about safe driving, in the hopes of us becoming better citizens. The top eight

schools were announced and called on stage to compete in the next round! Lady luck did not

smile on us! We were not in this prestigious list. Howeve,r I think we could very well be a part of

the top 8 next year.

We stayed back to watch the top 8 in action, they had to go through a number of rounds: Direct

Spelling, Anagrams, Crossword, Word-making and Rapid Fire. It was an intense affair, with

Pranav and me constantly rattling spellings of one another. Last year‟s champions – Campion

School, won again and will go on to represent Mumbai in the National Spelling Event. I think we

have an opportunity to embody the „REFLECTIVE‟ IB learner profile, by taking time to think

about what we could have done better. Overall it was an interesting experience, one that I have

never before experienced; it was fascinating to see the hard work some of the schools had put in

and their vocabularies were impeccable! We hope to participate again next year.

Thank you Swati Ma‟am for escorting us!

SCIENCE QUIZ

P hysics, Chemistry and Biology? Oh no, not again! Well, this was my

reaction towards them; I was not a typical science student and so I didn‟t fancy activities involving science as much as I would other

subjects. I mean, how can science ever be fun? Who wants to know about

the gravitational force or acids or which enzyme does what? However, after

the Science quiz on Tuesday 10/12/13, my views about science completely changed. I never knew science could be so much fun. Being an inter house

event, the 4 houses were divided into smaller 4 individual teams, each

representing a house. The quiz contained 3 rounds and each one of us had to try our best to get those 50 points for the house. Eventually Topaz won, my house Ruby was the first

runner up and then Emerald, followed by Sapphire. Overall, it was a fun filled activity and I learned so

much about science. I am sure all of us would want to thank the science department of our school for their

effort and enthusiasm to ensure that the event was more than just successful. It was a great experience. Monil Shah
