DESCRIPTION
Future research questions? How do we acquire language? ◦Role of first language in second language acquisition. ◦Role of Individual differences (memory, aptitude etc) ◦Role of age in language acquisition and attrition. ◦How can we best teach language? (first language (L1) literacy, second languages (L2) etc) ◦What happens in a third language (L3) situation? ◦Variation in native speakers? ◦Link between comprehension and production. ◦Role of formulaic language How do we process language? ◦How do we read? What does this tell us about the underlying system of language in the brain? ◦What happens to language when our brains change, e.g. after a stroke, dementia?

Online measurement of language developmentDR VIVIENNE ROGERS, COAHCODAH BID DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP: 25 TH JAN 2016
My research Language acquisition and processing (first, second, bilingual, children, adults, old age)
PhD looked at the development of syntax (word order) by English learners of French.◦ Former secondary school French and German teacher◦ Published Rogers (2010)
Since my PhD – 3 main areas:◦ Language learning aptitude: validation of the LLAMA aptitude tests
◦ Rogers, Meara, Aspinall, Fallon, Goss, Keey & Thomas (2015), Rogers (2016)◦ Links between vocabulary and syntax
◦ Treffers-Daller & Rogers (2014), Rogers, Milton & Playfoot (2016)◦ Teaching methods for second language German: using psycholinguistic techniques in the classroom
◦ ESRC bid in progress. Pilot data collected.
Large corpus/ data sets to address empirically motivated research questions. ◦ http://flloc.soton.ac.uk/newcastle/tasklist.html#Year13
Future research questions? How do we acquire language?
◦ Role of first language in second language acquisition.◦ Role of Individual differences (memory, aptitude etc)◦ Role of age in language acquisition and attrition.◦ How can we best teach language? (first language (L1) literacy, second languages (L2) etc)◦ What happens in a third language (L3) situation?◦ Variation in native speakers?◦ Link between comprehension and production.◦ Role of formulaic language
How do we process language? ◦ How do we read? What does this tell us about the underlying system of language in the brain?◦ What happens to language when our brains change, e.g. after a stroke, dementia?
Future research: online methods?
My research is all empirical and relies on collecting lots of data.◦ Much of my data collected using paper and pencil (offline)
Several methods for collecting real time data (online):
Reaction time measures◦ Develop online judgement tasks.
◦ Online = on the internet
Eye-tracking measures◦ Visual world – possibly links with gaming?◦ Reading?
fMRI measures◦ What parts of the brain are involved in language processing?
Thank you. Any questions?
