When Someone Deeply Listens To Youby John Fox
When someone deeply listens to you/it is like holding out a dented cup/you've had since childhood/and watching it fill up with/cold, freshwater./When it balances on top of the brim,/you are understood./When it overflows and touches your skin,/you are loved.
When someone deeply listens to you/the room where you stay/starts a new life/and the place where you wrote/your first poem/begins to glow in your mind's eye /It is as if gold has been discovered.
When someone deeply listens to you/your bare feet are on the earth/and a beloved land that seemed distant/is now at home within you.
Nominating Committee Seeking CandidatesThe OUUF nominating committee is putting together a slate for our December annual meeting to elect our Board of Trustees, an endowment committee director and the nomination committee for 2021. Recently, members were emailed the proposed bylaw changes. The committee is seeking candidates based on the proposed changes to the bylaws and assuming the congregation will pass the bylaws at the September 29, 2019, Congregational meeting. The proposed Board of Trustees will consist of a President, Vice-president, Director of Finance and four at-large members. Please speak to any of the committee members if you are interested in one of
these positions or you wish to make suggestions to the committee. The nominating committee members are Catharine Covert, Penny Burdick, George Stratton, Susan Harris, and Kathi Gunn. Catharine Covert, [email protected]
Tuesday BrunchThe next Tuesday Brunch will be August 13th at 11:00 AM at the Mariners Restaurant in the JC Penney's Mall in Sequim. Everyone is welcome and we have good conversations along with breakfast or lunch. Come and give it a try if you haven't been there. Rose Prestipino, [email protected]
Herding Cats Event / Confrontation with Mountains! August 29, 11ish o'clock. Hurricane Ridge (first picnic area beyond visitor center at the top). Get in touch with your nature at the most spectacular

Going for the Trash! Highway Cleanup. August 31. 9:30 am. Meet on River Road / South Side (just beyond 101 exits & entrances). Pick up trash! This past Sunday Dave Large and Susan Harris expressed and shared their love and joy in finding each other in a beautiful and moving Commitment Ceremony. Several persons witnessing the ceremony were taking photos and/or video. Dave and Susan would be grateful for a copy and we hope to post some to the website to share with those who could not attend. Volunteers are needed to go through containers of event decorations that are in the sanctuary closet. Decisions need to be made about what to keep and what should be eliminated. recruited some exciting speakers for the Fall and Winter. First, the retired pastor of Quimper UU, Rev. Bruce Bode, has agreed to speak to us twice in September and once in November. Bruce is a powerful speaker and we believe you will enjoy him. Come, check him out. One of our long-time favorites, Rev. Amanda Aikman has agreed to speak twice in November. Joseph Bednarik has agreed to two messages in December. Joe Rettenmaier who always speaks from his heart is returning in October. Margo Reinhart has a special message from the Bhagavad Gita planned for December. It is also our great good fortune to have Brother Jamal Rahman returning to speak to us on January 26, 2020. We were in the car when Kirk, my three-year-old son, said, “We don’t need guns in school. I know what to do—you have to hide and be quiet. That’s what Ms. Laurie says.”I thought I misheard him. One. Two. Three: I waited to figure out what to say next.At the parent-teacher conference the week prior, Kirk’s teacher
Ms. Laurie told us about the active shooter drills and how they help keep the kids safe. “The kids think it’s a game,” she assured us. “They don’t understand.”We were all wrong.Kirk and I went that day to visit our congressional leader to talk about gun reform. Afterward, he asked for a donut. I was on full speed, but I stopped anyway. We sat in a cramped Dunkin’ Donuts while he ate his pink-frosted strawberry donut—with sprinkles, of course. We talked about his school and feeling safe. Kirk concluded, “We can make school safer. I like meeting people.”For the past two years, life has often felt like a hurricane. I don’t know if it’s the political movement, the shattering of my privileged isolation, the acceleration of parenting, or some combination therein, but there are times when the sheer force of the winds terrify me.I remember in the hospital after giving birth to twins, I was all adrenaline, ready to do loops in the maternity care unit. An experienced nurse approached me: “Lie down. Just for an hour.”I don’t know if life is going to slow down. A donut in a cramped coffee shop, a cool breeze breaks loose across the march, an hour of sleep in the hospital bed. Being faithful doesn’t mean endless work. It also means attention to the movement of spirit that can appear as an hour of sleep, the truth of a toddler, or a donut in the middle of the day. PrayerAbide with me, Gracious One. Open my awareness to the cool breeze, the hour of sleep, the stillness in the midst of the storm.
