The Minister’s Column Quoted in Ken Collier's book, Principles and Purposes in Story and in Verse, Paul H. Beattie, (1937-1989) founder of the organization Unitarian Universalists for Freedom of Conscience, articulated a vision of the church that would encourage the widest possible diversity and pluralism by a radical application of the free mind. He was particularly concerned about the modern tendency toward political conformism, but he wanted a church that was inclusive in the broadest terms. 'I want my Unitarian Universalist Church to include Christians, Theists, Humanists, and others. I want its political discussions to include Republicans, Democrats, consumers, and Libertarians. I want its discussions of economics to include Milton Friedmanites and John Kenneth Galbraithians, Marxists, Socialists and Capitalists or Free-Enterprisors. Such inclusiveness which grows out of a radical congregational polity, the free-mind principal, and the non-credal approach to religion, is the only possible basis for modern Unitarian Universalism.’"

This philosophy is the basis for the best of United States national practices, also. We have allowed ourselves to be divided-at our own peril.

Our historians remind us of the atrocities brought on by the War Between the States. It pays to stay engaged...to walk together, to recognize one another's strength and challenge one another's hubris. It pays to dig into what is really going on (George Orwell is our role model here) and it pays to learn the fine skills of disagreement. Argument need not lead to disengagement and-thus- polarization.

Although it had its ideological origins in Europe, Unitarian Universalism is truly a United States phenomenon. The self-image of both our faith tradition and our nation reside in learning how to listen as well as proclaim, to learn from others as well as share our own truths. It is no small task to create the Unitarian Universalism of Paul Beattie...but it is our mission. Let us commit to deep dialogue, shoulder-to-shoulder action, and ongoing engagement across the divides. When this is bruising, let us also be the healers of one another. Here's to life well and fully lived!

A Word from Stewardship The pledge drive is over for this year – THANK YOU again for your generosity that helped us achieve our goal! But our stewardship of this community continues. We give our time and talents, make connections, and help each other to build bridges within and outside the Fellowship.

From Lauren Oliver. . . I was a troubled teen and I was constantly looking for someone to throw me a rope. Those ropes are connections. They allow us to see that life exists beyond the little worlds we are currently a part of.

From your Stewardship Team: Bonnie Groop, Mikel Anne North, Danni Schantz, Ivie Sorkin, Mary Wicks

A Message from Youth Community Members of Youth Community continued to learn, grow, and serve during the month of May. In RE (Religious Education), the youth participated in a series of racial justice teach-ins. We joined UU congregations around the nation asking the question, “How can we resist racism? During the teach-ins, we explored institutional racism and how privilege can play out in conversations about race. During the May 7 Landscape Workday, Youth Community members placed mulch and installed step-in fence posts around the new children’s garden.

June brings the end of the RE year. We will celebrate the start of summer with a pizza and movie night at the UUFWC on Friday, June 2 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. At the request of Youth Community members, we will watch Dances with Wolves—a film featured in one of our RE Popcorn Theology sessions. Pizza, popcorn, and beverage will be provided. You are welcome to bring in additional goodies to share. RE Sunday is June 4, which begins our 10:00 am summer worship schedule. Youth Community members are asked to arrive by 9:30 am on RE Sunday in order to practice our skits/presentation. We hope you join us for these end-of-year events! If you would like to learn more about Youth Community, you may reach Dawn Frank, Youth and Campus Ministries Coordinator, at [email protected].

BOWLING PARTY – The feedback we received from some of the close to 100 people who attended our first ever UUFWC BOWLING PARTY was overwhelmingly positive. UU’s can be quite creative with their technique including the imaginative use of bumper guards! Everyone is looking forward to a repeat of this fun, multi-age event that gave our members and friends time to mingle and laugh whether or not they took to the lanes.

NEW MEMBERS – Five of our friends recently signed the UUFWC Membership Book. Please welcome Vivian Ashcraft, Deb and Gene Barnes, Bethany Jasin, and transfer Charlotte Bishop. We recognized the new members who were present during our April 30th services. Our next New Member Sunday will take place this fall.

NEW MEMBER BIO - Charlotte Bishop, a delightful lady, has joined our Fellowship and we thought you would like to know a bit about her. She is Bert Bishop's stepmother, graduated with a degree in nursing and ended up in Denver where she met Bert’s dad. Though she was born in Newark, NJ, she lived in Pittsburg, PA; Seneca, SC; and Denver, CO, before ending up here in Wooster, OH. We are so happy to welcome this animal lover and former UU Youth Advisor to our Fellowship!

UU INQUIRY - Our Summer UU Inquiry will take place immediately following the July 23rd service. These sessions are designed for those who are relatively new to our congregation, providing an opportunity to learn a little more about our religion and how our Fellowship functions while we also take time to get to know each other during a casual lunch.

Softball! We are happy to report that we are going to play in the Wayne County Co-Ed Softball Church League. Eighteen members, and also a few substitutes, are excited to participate on the inaugural UU softball team. Games are all played on Sundays, weather dependent, beginning on June 4, and are all played at the Four Square Church Field on the corner of Miltown and Friendsville Roads. We greatly appreciate the Fellowships support in this venture and look forward to seeing all of you at a game or two. Please come watch us play!

Games are as follows:

June 4 @ 2:00 pm June 11 @ 9:00 pm June 18 @ 5:00 pm June 25 @ 2:00 and 3:00 (a double-header)

July 2 @ 6:00 pm July 9 @ 3:00 and 4:00 (another double-header) July 16 @ 2:00 pm July 23 @ 4:00 pm July 30 @ 2:00 pm

August 6 and August 13 are tournament dates. The times are not yet known.

Social Action In Action OPEN PLATE COLLECTION on JUNE 25th will be given to St. James Episcopal Church for their Saturday Lunch Program. Lunches serve approximately 80 to 100 individuals each week. They are served every Saturday in the Parish Hall from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and are open to everyone. We help the “Lunch Bunch” at St. James because they work hard to provide a needed public service. PEOPLE TO PEOPLE SUNDAY IS JUNE 18th. We will be collecting wide-lined loose leaf filler paper and college ruled filler paper to help with the Back to School project. As always, cash is welcome. Make checks payable to People to People. The UUFWC will be collecting needed school supplies instead of the usual food donations in June and July. In July we will collect highlighters and Sharpies. People to People Ministries has reevaluated the school supplies they distribute during their Back to School project. Area schools are being contacted for updated school supply lists so that the needs of students can be met. Both the loose leaf paper and the highlighters and Sharpies were in short supply at last year’s Back to School distribution. Volunteer groups will pre-package the supplies by grade level for distribution. WHERE HAVE ALL THE CONTAINERS GONE? Remember the boxes and bins on and under the rear table? They are no longer there. In order to provide more seating for our ever growing congregation, we removed the tables and replaced them with a shelving unit containing cloth bins. All bins are labeled as to contents and you’ll find the place for your recyclables there. You can recycle used inkjet cartridges, Our Family labels [they are taken to the Startzman clinic], toiletries collected from hotels [they are taken to OneEighty and the Salvation Army], and eyeglasses. The People to People bin remains in the back.

All Thing Green WAYNE CLEAN WATER PARTNERSHIP is a project of the Green Sanctuary Team. One of the requirements for certification as a UUA Green Sanctuary congregation was a project involving a community or ecumenical group. The Wayne Clean Water Partnership is a working group of the Wooster Interfaith Justice Committee and its most recent project has been as a citizens’ watch group for the Utopia pipeline which will cross the buried aquifer which feeds the south well field of the City of Wooster and is its only fresh water source. Through the efforts of UUFWC’s own Karen Skubik, a reporter for The Wooster Weekly, an article about the Partnership’s activities appeared in the May 13, 2017 issues. Thank you, Karen for your work. WOW SUMMER GARDEN is taking shape. The Green Sanctuary Team will be responsible for this summer’s WOW program for the children. The fenced garden is located next to the green shed on the driveway where trees have been cut down, leaving roots and stumps. The challenge will be to grow a variety of vegetables planted in various pots, boxes and tires in a place not suitable for a garden. In addition, a wild edibles garden will be planted nearby. Check them out! ATTENTION ORGANIC GARDENERS: a wide variety of organic plant foods and soil amendments (including worm castings and bat guano), along with bagged compost from Paradise Composting Co. are available at The Greenhouse Shoppe, 3649 Cleveland Rd. Wooster. BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY - RESOURCE INFORMATION PROJECT: We are moving forward on a project to assist people find the rich resources offered in our community. This has been an area of concern for awhile within the community of those agency people and church members who assist people. We want to guide people to find resources to be successful in using the services available to remain in their homes, have food & maintain their daily lives.

We will be offering a table in the lobby of Viola Startzman Clinic with flyers and information of where to find supports in this community. We have been learning about resources from our regular meetings with United Way and meeting with human service organizations. You can support this work by joining us to become a “navigator volunteer” to share information with those in need. Stay tuned for details. THANKS

500 PLATES IN WOOSTER: Friday June 16, 5:00 – 7:00. We will place tables around the block starting at United Way and will invite groups of 10 people from various neighborhoods throughout all socioeconomic groups around Wooster to gather for a meal and discussion about topics such as food insecurity, women & LGBTQ community in poverty, fostering resiliency etc. The intention is to bring people together to begin to break down socio economic divisions. Volunteers needed to plan, find participants, set up tables, host a discussion, tear down, etc. We will keep you posted.

Nuclear Weapons are About to be Banned and We Need Your Voice! In one of its final acts of 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted with overwhelming support a landmark resolution to begin negotiation on a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons. This historic decision heralds and end to two decades of paralysis in multilateral nuclear disarmament efforts. Through June and July, 2017, governments will negotiate a ban on nuclear weapons at the United nations. The Women’s March to Ban the Bomb is a women-led initiative building on the momentum of movements at the forefront of the resistance, including the Women’s March on Washington. It will bring together people of all genders, sexual orientations, ages, races, abilities, nationalities, cultures, faiths, political affiliations and backgrounds to March and Rally on Saturday, June 17. Here in Wooster, we will gather at the Gazebo downtown from 1-4pm.

Listed below are two book titles new to the UUFWC library:

THE BOOK OF JOY: LASTING HAPPINESS IN A CHANGING WORLD By His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu 294.3 Dala 2016

“Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships or, as they would say, because of them they are two of the most joyful people on the planet.

In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness’s eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the fact of life’s inevitable suffering? ……

We get to listen as they explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy from fear, stress, and anger to grief, illness, and death. They then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness. Throughout, they include stories, wisdom, and science. Finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives.

The Archbishop has never claimed sainthood, and the Dalai Lama considers himself a simple monk. In this unique collaboration, they offer us the reflection of real lives filled with pain and turmoil in the midst of which they have been able to discover a level of peace, of courage, and of joy to which we can all aspire in our own lives.” ….Quote from inSpirit web site

LANDSCAPES OF AGING AND SPIRITUALITY: ESSAYS Editor, Kathleen Montgomery 242.65 Mont 2015

“In a collection of lovely essays, nineteen writers reflect on the experience of aging and the ways it intersects with their spiritual lives. Alternately tender and frank, funny and wistful, these heartfelt ruminations offer companionship for those walking the journey of later life. The authors, many of them retired ministers, approach the topic from many angles, with many stories – including adjusting to wearing leg braces due to neuropathy, being called “a woman of your age,” considering what it would be like to have nothing left to prove, and reflecting on assisted suicide and its impact on those we love. These thoughtful writers ponder growing older as a spiritual path—not one that we choose, but one that has chosen us.” ….Quote from the book’s back cover
