This year, the Echo Chamber party goes all out in a preview performance event with a true East Van flavour. Held in the newly refurbished (and now within the new Crawl boundary) Vancouver East Cultural Centre — Echo Chamber is a carnival of delights; a non-stop journey of over lapping performances. With acts rotating through the theatre, the Lab and lobby, the audience is free to wander at will from Indie Rock to House DJs, from Cabaret to Gypsy Punk.

The Eastside Culture Crawl has become one of

Vancouver’s cultural treasures. The neighbourhood is

rich with fabulous artists of a multitude of crafts who

are eager to share their talents with cultural crawlers. It

is the unique character of our city that allows us to be

able to appreciate and participate in a celebration of the

arts such as the Eastside Culture Crawl. Vancouverites

are fortunate to have such a strong and creative arts

community.

Welcome to the 14th annual Eastside Culture Crawl! There is nothing like the excitement of ducking into studios, big and small, while wandering through creative and quirky East Van. So whether you’ve been around the block a few times, or are a newbie on the Crawl, we hope you find something that really amazes you.

For those who haven’t heard the news, 2010 has been a hallmark year for the organization. This spring we bid farewell to longstanding Executive Director, Valerie Arntzen, who leaves a legacy of bringing the Crawl to where it is today, known and loved by thousands. Thank you Valerie, for all that you have done over the years!

On the other side of that coin we welcome our new Executive Director, Jeffrey Boone, to take us into the next decade. The Board is excited to have him join us, his contagious enthusiasm and creative ideas including providing more opportunities to promote our member artists year-round!

Don’t forget to check out the newly expanded boundaries- the Crawl now takes you 2 blocks further east to Victoria Drive, including several talented artists and The Cultch (location of this year’s Echo Chamber!) We hope you’ll wander a little farther east, and check out these new additions.

Welcome to the 2010 edition of the Crawl. Having attended for the past 12 years and seen the growing public interest and support for the event, I feel privileged to be on the other side and gaining an understanding of what has made it so successful. For her many years of service we all owe a debt of gratitude to Valerie Arntzen and to the many board members, who over the years, have crafted a vision for that success.

At the heart of the event is a community of driven dedicated, entrepreneurial artists, craftspeople, designers and makers of things thoughtful, meaningful, useful and beautiful. I am genuinely moved by the good will their work inspires in the public, the local business community and our private supporters.

The continued dedication of all of these stakeholders has taken this event and raised it to a phenomenon unparalleled anywhere. In doing so, an organization has evolved. One that educates, advocates and promotes local culture. As such, the Eastside Culture Crawl Society is often called upon to be a voice in those many regards.

I am delighted to work for a committed, supportive and thoughtful board as they continue to develop ways for the public to connect with our membership and to continue expanding the audience for art and culture.

Echo ChamberNovember 21st 7pm – 12am at

Studio 101STUDIo 101 is an initiative created

by past ECCS Board Member, Mira Malatestinic. This program brings Grade 6/7 students into artists’ studios to see how a professional artist’s works and to experience making art with them. These studio visits take place the week after the Eastside Culture Crawl.

Prior to the studio visits, Richard Tetrault, and other volunteer artists such as Suzan Marczak, visit the school to explain the artists’ creative process and what medium the students will see when they will visit the studio. The students tour the artists’ studios, getting to talk about art making, life as an artist, and so on. The classes are given a budget to purchase a piece from one of the artists at the end of the process.

The EaSTSIDE mUral ToUr. The Strathcona Business Improvement Association facilitates a mural creation program to support local artists and to help create a positive image for the area. This year the association has partnered with the Crawl to organize a tour of the murals. A marks the mural locations on map pages 8 and 9.

The GolD SponSor ToUr is a private event organized for those sponsors that have contributed over $1250 to the Eastside Culture Crawl. The Gold Sponsor Tour visits a small selection of studios with the aim of delivering a more intimate experience — a small way of thanking Gold Sponsors for their generous support.

The VancoUVEr IS awESomE ToUr takes you on a tour of some of their favourite artists studios. A great way to see artists in their workspace.

The byron acEman collEcTorS’ ToUr is a private event organized by one of Vancouver’s most enthusiastic collectors to introduce a select group of his friends to some of the artists represented in Mr. Aceman’s collection.

Counting PeopleWe have embarked on the massive

project of counting everyone who attends the Crawl this year. We are recruiting 150+ volunteers to count every person who enters a building during the entire weekend.
