Freestyle rapping withMahogany Jones' helpis Kai Rogers '20.Rogers and severalothers volunteered toshare their skills infront of the school.

Mahogany Jones made a big impact on EastMiddle School with her performance andmotivational talk during the 3rd installment ofthe Building Bridges with music series. Studentsapproached her after the performance, posedfor selfies and asked questions. She tours toschools around the Midwest as a special guestwith Building Bridges with Music. "Just recently,I got a really cool phone call from a gentlemanby the name of Jeff Haas, and he told me aboutthe program...which is to do pretty much what Igo across the world to do...to begin to connectcultural dots, but using music and using thearts," said Jones. Mahogany has travelled allover the world, breaking down people’s culturalstereotypes using art and music. “We reallymake efforts to just try and keep everything

temperate...we go to different countries wherethey send diplomats, where ambassadors maybe, and where people don’t always have thegreatest view of America or Americans so thework that we do culturally is kind of to just goand share our music and work with the localartists that are there and the vocal communitythat’s there to help them see that we’re not asbad as you think we are but we’re not asfabulous as you think we might be, and thatwe’re not all Donald Trump.” In her own words, she basically just wants everyone to know: “HeyI have a big package of love for you, and it justhappens to be a whole bunch of words andmusic and I hope you like it.”

BuildingBridges "I thought Building Bridges was areally cool exposure to a lot ofcreative stuff that we otherwisewouldn't see," Mr. Ford. Building Bridges is a group of artisticindividuals that come to East Middle School. They present lessons to the students of theschool that will help kids with problems thatoccur daily. One way they shared theirmessage was by playing musicalinstruments with and without the EastMiddle School Band Students. By playingtheir instruments they taught the studentsof East not to bully each other because weare all different in several ways. "Thepurpose of Building Bridges is to use musicas a spring board to teach great lessons,"said Founder Jeff Haas. Everytime Building Bridges visits East MiddleSchool they bring with them a guest. Thistime they brought with them band students

who are currently attending a college. Theyalso invited East Middle School's Black Band Band students to play with them while alsoteaching another great lesson. "I think musiccan be really moving while teaching a greatlesson," said Kailey Gustafson '20. All theband students agreed that it was a greatexperience for everyone. "It was really coolto play with people who are experienced inJazz because this is my first year in JazzBand. We also taught a lesson to theaudience at the same time,” said Sidra Smith

"I likeBuildingBridgesbecause itsends agoodmessageout to ourschool in afun andinteractiveway,"MackenzieBohrer '21.

14 Carolynn Garner

Page 15: Eastside Story 2016

Another way that BuildingBridges collaborated to putacross their message wasthrough dance. Jeff Haasinvited dancers KatelynColling and Dwaylan Jones toEMS for a Martin Luther KingJr. Celebration. The twoprepared three differentdances to share with ourschool. Dwaylan has been dancingsince he was fourteen and hestudied dance at the DetroitSchool of Arts. He is alsocurrently a sophomore atConcordia University. "Dancehas been one of the greatestthings in my life," said Jones.Katelyn has been dancingsince she was just threeyears-old and hopes that oneday she can have theopportunity to be aprofessional dancer.

"Our goal was to teach the

youth about equality andhow to accept each other'sdifferences no matter race,

gender, or sexualorientation," said Jones.

Jeff Haas also reached out to and invited her to come andtake part in the celebration.

She sang "Way In The Water"and the world famous

Whitney Houston song, "IWill Always Love You".

She has been singing since

the age of three and eversince then music has been

such a huge part of her life."Music is so important to me

and it has helped me tomeet so many people, andsome from other races andcultural backgrounds," said

Wheeler.

" " "I like hearing thedifferent kinds of musicthat they play for us,"said Jack Brizard '22.
