Weekly Newsletter of South Charlotte Middle School OCTOBER 3, 2014 Parents, Thank you to those of you who are waiting patiently in our car line to pick up your students each day. We are working diligently to ensure this is a smooth process. Mrs. Butcher, Mr. Theiler, and Mrs. Jones have organized the process in a way that keeps your students safe. Instead of students just walking to cars, risking walking out in front of a moving one, we are forcing the students to load just four cars at a time (the front two in each lane). We are also releasing by grade levels now. Sixth grade car riders are released first so they may move through the hallways easily. Again, thank you for your patience as we continue to refine processes to ensure your students’ safety. There are some parents that are parking off campus and students are walking to the cars. This is not ideal; however, the school cannot demand you not do this. We are working with the students to ensure they are not walking on personal property as they are walking to the off campus cars. I had a very nice lady (who lives in RAINTREE and supports our school very much) meet with me that asked that the students stay off the grass in RAINTREE. There is a man dying of cancer in one of the homes that the students walk in front of on WOODFOX Lane when they are walking to cars. She asked that we be more diligent in ensuring the noise level is low and the students not walk on the grass. I felt these were very simple requests. Parents, I know your students have activities and places to be after school and waiting in a car line is not a lot of fun; however, when you think of the people that are being negatively affected by you not going through the car line, choosing to park on the sides of roads, neighborhoods, etc. ;waiting in a car line (that finishes in less than 15 minutes) seems like something all of us can do. I ask that you consider it. Also, please notice the signs on WOODFOX Lane that indicate NO PARKING. Cars could receive tickets if parked in that area. Again, to those of you that wait in our car line, thank you. Please mark your calendars for October 31 st . This is the day we will host parent conferences. More information will be forthcoming. Next week is spirit week. I ask that you support your students as they participate in all of the fun activities that our Student Council and Marketing Team, under the direction of Mrs. Titus, Mrs. Rogers, and Mrs. Glen, have planned for our students. Thursday is a special day. The Athletic Boosters are hosting a tailgate. We are so excited and want to thank Lynn Pounds and Mary Anne Seaman for organizing it. We hope as many members of the South Charlotte Community as possible attend what I know will be a fun, spirited event. During the month of December, I will host several coffees, teas, etc. so that you may come in, in small groups, and hear the vision for South Charlotte going forward and you will have the chance to ask questions and share information with me. I look forward to this time. I will send dates for this in the next week or so. RSVP’s will be nice; however, not necessary. As always, thank you for allowing us to serve your students. They are amazing young people. Great job, parents! Best, Lisa Bailes, Principal

Paving the Way to the Future

South Charlotte Middle School Annual Fund

PTO is excited to announce that we have exceeded our Annual Fund goal of $32,000 by

taking in over $35,000 in gifts, pledges and matching gifts. We don't want to stop there,

though!

Because this fund will be used to make continued improvements to our Media

Center, we encourage those families who have not yet donated to submit a gift. After

all, there are always ways to continue improving the Media Center, and we plan to use

your gifts through the Annual Fund to do just that.

We have had about 22% of all South Charlotte families give to the campaign so far, and

our goal is 100% participation. There is no gift too small (or too big!) so please

consider submitting your gift today. If you have lost your green form to submit your

gift, click here to print another. Thanks for your support of PTO's biggest

fundraiser.

BOX TOPS - Submission Deadline this Month!

Box Tops Fall Submission is right around the corner. Our deadline is Oct. 30th. This is a super easy fundraiser for SCMS, but we need you. Please keep on clipping and sending them in with your students. There is a Box Tops box in the school’s foyer for drop off.

Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you to Christy Story, Sue Allen, DeHaven Taylor, Dana Both, Amy Miller, Edy Cail,

Ann Hallberg, Tanya Ormand, Yolanda Wilmer, Mary Catherine Dees, and Nicole Love

for sending in breakfast items for the Staff Meeting this week! It was much

appreciated! We love our Shocker parents!

Sincerely,

Internet Safety Tips

Talk with your child about Internet safety as soon as he/she begins using the Internet. It is never too early to start discussing the importance of being a good digital citizen. Use age-appropriate filtering, blocking and monitoring software on all Internet-enabled devices used by your child, including laptops, wireless phones and video games. Stay involved in your child’s online world by setting limits on his/her “screen time” and monitoring who your child is communicating with online. Get to know the web sites your child is visiting and educate yourself about your child’s online activities. Review FOSI’s Internet Safety Contract with your family members and consider having all family members sign the agreement. Explain to your child that he/she should never give out personally identifiable information online. For example, your child should understand that he/she should not post detailed information about his/her whereabouts. Make sure your child knows never to meet someone they met online face-to-face without first talking with you about the situation. Tell your child to never share their passwords with anyone, including friends. Explain the consequences of posting inappropriate material online. For example, a child’s reputation can be impacted by a status entry or an image that is shared. Monitor your child’s mobile phone usage and review text messages sent and received, including images downloaded and uploaded. Educate yourself on the latest threats facing kids online (e.g., cyberbullying, sexting, etc.) and arm yourself with information that will allow you to talk to your child about being a good digital citizen.

Volunteers Needed to Help Construct Newtown Memorial

Description1

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is building a playground in memory of the lives lost in the

2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and you can help.

The playground will be built at Park Road Park during the week of Oct.

27, and will require the assistance of volunteers at all skill levels.

Shifts will require at least 200 people each and are scheduled for the following time slots:

Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon

Monday-Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday from 8 a.m. until noon

Lunch will be provided between the morning and afternoon shifts.

“The playground is a gift to our community and a tribute to the fortitude and spirit of the Newtown

community,” said Jim Garges, director of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. “We hope we can

count on volunteer support to help to make the Newtown Playground at Park Road Park a reality.”

In 2013, the department worked with students at Pinewood Elementary School in south Charlotte to

come up with ideas for the playground’s design. Video

Design firm Leathers & Associates produced the formal plans for the playground and will assist with the

construction of the playground.

The community can also support this project with in-kind donations of materials, tools, volunteer meals

and refreshments, and other items to be used on-site during the playground build.

To volunteer, or for more information, contact Lori Saylor at [email protected] or

980-314-1045.

On-Line School Payments (OSP)

CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept payments for school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a fee (4%), and allows you to pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also relieves our teachers from the time taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in money or checks. Teachers will continue to take cash and checks as they always have.

Just sign in to: osp.osmsinc.com/CMS

Choose your student’s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment.

The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. It is rolling out in all CMS schools this year. Through the year, events will be added including field trips, textbooks, fees, and other payments.
