Dear Parents,
It has been a great year so far for our student-athletes. The football, volleyball, and softball teams have
experienced wins and I am so very proud of them. It is true that many of the life lessons learned from
coaches, directors, and other extra-curricular leaders are lessons that young people carry throughout a
lifetime. Character traits such as discipline, sportsmanship, sharing, selflessness, competitiveness, and
pride are just a few of the special qualities students learn in these activities. A special thank you to
Coach Otey, his team of coaches, and our Performing Arts teachers for the job they do with our students
on the playing field and on stage during and after school.
South Charlotte strives each day to be the best middle school in the country. The environment is one
that focuses on academic rigor. High Expectations for students comes with a rigorous environment. Our
goal is to prepare students for the world of high school, be it South Mecklenburg, Providence, Ardrey
Kell or any other High School in the area. I ask that you are supportive of what we are trying to
accomplish and understand that homework accompanies a rigorous program and there are very high
expectations for the completion of the homework. Homework is designed to extend the content
outside the walls of the classroom and reinforce what students are doing in class. Thank you for
working with your children each night completing homework assignments. Homework assignments are
posted on teacher Wiki pages and in each student’s agenda. You may check those two resources to
determine the homework assignments.
I would like to say a special thank you for adhering to the rule of waiting for your students in our car line
in the afternoon as opposed to parking and waiting for your students. Please also refrain from parking
in the teachers’ parking lots in the morning. These areas are marked with red signs with the words:
STAFF PARKING. Teachers are required to be at work at 8:00 AM and many of them have tutoring or
other obligations once they arrive. It is necessary for them to park and get into the building to care for
your children as quickly as possible. If a parent is parked in a teacher’s parking spot, time is wasted as
there is a ripple effect that occurs….one parks in the wrong space, then another, then another. Staff has
been informed to not park in VISITOR parking because that area is reserved for you, our parents. There
are visitor parking spaces in the front of the school and on the side. We are working diligently to get our
parking lot painted with specific numbers for staff so that will help as well. I do hope you understand
that our obligation is to provide a safe and orderly environment and one with high academic rigor for
your children. In doing so, we need to ensure teachers are inside the building on time. Believe it or not,
a simple mishap with a parking space can cause several teachers to be late getting to their classrooms
and/or duties. I appreciate your cooperation so very much.
It is a privilege to be the Principal at such an incredible school with such great students. You should be
very proud of your student(s) and what they accomplish each day.
As always, thank you for allowing us to serve your children each day
Regards,
Lisa Bailes, Principal

Please email Ms. Kissmann a small picture of you

participation in a charity run/walk event, etc) and
it might show up in the Friday Newsletter. Those
of you that have signed up for the Big South 5k at
Blakeney, please be sure to email me a photo from

MRS. SMITH, LIBRARIAN
This is Nelda Smith's sixth year as librarian at South Charlotte. Along with
her three brothers and three sisters, she was raised on a farm outside
Boone, NC. Mrs. Smith graduated from Appalachian State University with
a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and received her Master's
Degree in Library Science from Florida State University. In addition to
being a librarian, she is certified to teach elementary school and middle
school science. Mrs. Smith and her husband have three wonderful
children, two who are in college and one who is a junior at Ardrey Kell High School. She also has a very
spoiled schnauzer who thinks she should always be the center of attention. In her free time, Mrs. Smith
likes to watch her children perform (sing, dance, and play music), bake, and of course read, read, read. Mrs.
Smith loves connecting students to reading and books and thinks being a librarian at South Charlotte is the
best job in the world.

munity can upload and view photos on the site, creating a fun, interactive experience. Our yearbook staff
will use ReplayIt.com to easily view and select photos for the yearbook. With more photos to choose from
the staff will be able to create a better, more inclusive book. FYI. . . when students purchase a yearbook,
they get free and exclusive online access to their ReplayIt Time Capsule--where they can see all the photos
from the year.

SCMS FALL BOOKFAIR
For one week a year, the SCMS Auxiliary Gym transforms into a Barnes and No-
ble (minus the wood paneling and comfortable chairs). A big hand and a round
of applause goes out to everyone who contributed to the success of the SCMS
Annual Fall Book Fair. Many hands contributed to filling classroom novel pre-
orders, working the cash registers, and finally packing it all up. It would not
have been possible without the help and support of the faculty, staff and par-
ent volunteers who gave hours of their time to ensure a successful fundraiser
for our school.
Thank you to all for the generosity of your time!
CLASSROOM NOVEL PRE-ORDERS
ALL of the classroom novels that were pre-ordered have been distributed. If there are any questions or
concerns regarding any items that you pre-ordered this Fall, please contact Lisa Kelley at
[email protected] or (704)246-6575. Any issues need to be resolved right away.

Duke TIP Information:
*7th Grade Parents*
Please be on the look out for information that may be coming home with your 7th grade child this Friday
(Sept. 28th). If your son or daughter scored at the 95th percentile or higher on the 5th or 6th grade Math,
Reading, Science EOG (End of Grade Tests), they are eligible to take part in the Duke TIP (Talent Identifica-
tion Program). This program allows eligible 7th grade students to take the SAT or ACT. Research has shown
that students who are more familiar with these tests perform better on them in future opportunities. They
also begin to see the significance of what they are covering in their current and future classes. If your child
has met the previously mentioned criteria, they will be coming home with further information and registra-
tion materials for the October registration . If you are interested in taking part of in the Duke TIP program,
please complete the following registration forms and send them to Duke TIP (this can be completed by mail-
in or on-line registration).

Attention South Charlotte MS!
We are less than a month away from the Big South 5K Road Race and I wanted to send you an update. Peo-
ple in the community are getting excited about the event and registering at www.bigsouth5k.com. We are
on pace to exceed our race participation numbers from last year but still need your support spreading the
word so we can raise additional money for South Charlotte MS. Please let us know how we can help in-
crease awareness in your school’s neighborhood!
Below are the current rankings of schools in order of how many people are running/walking on your
school’s behalf. Last year we were able to donate $15 back for every person that registered on behalf of
your school. Thus far, you have 12 people registered compared to 29 last year. Hopefully we can create
some buzz amongst parents, students, and faculty to keep your school at the top of the leaderboard!

Your Shocker softball team competed against
Southwest Middle on Monday in the first game
of the season. Natalie Hallman was the lead hit-
ter connecting with two singles that drove in two
runs. Alyssa Farrar pounded a ball for a double
and an RBI. After hitting a base hit, Bailie Smith
stole her way to home plate. Morgan Brader
helped the team with a single as well. The Shock-
ers were only down by one run after the first in-
ning with a score of 2-3. The team tried hard to
overcome Southwest's dominant offense, but
lost..
Your Shocker softball team brought home a big win
against AG 17-4. The yellow ball was hit all over
the diamond by Morgan Brader, Bailie Smith,
Alyssa Farrar, Molly Cole, Bridget McLendon, Si-
erra Goff, Iris Brammer, Elli Harman, and Natalie
Hallman with a triple. The girls played a tough de-
fensive game as well with many solid fielding
plays. Morgan Brader made an awesome catch at
shortstop and was our closing pitcher. Natalie
Hallman did an outstanding job pitching the first
four innings with eight strike outs. Our next game
is Monday against Community House at South
Charlotte.
VOLLEYBALLVOLLEYBALLVOLLEYBALLVOLLEYBALL
On Monday, Sept. 17th, the South Charlotte Lady
Shocker Volleyball team traveled to JM Robinson to
take on their rival in the first match of the sea-
son. After strong performances from Courtney
Bruno, Caroline Levine, Sarah Shipp and a host of
others, the Lady Shockers prevailed with a big 2
games to Zero win. The final scores of the match
were, 25- 23 and 25- 22.
On Monday, Sept. 24th, the South Charlotte Lady
Shockers Volleyball team played host to Southwest
Middle School. The Lady Shockers welcomed the
new members of the Southern League Conference
with an impressive win clinching the victory in just
2 games. Though the game was made interesting
by a variety of interesting calls from the referees,
the Lady shockers were never really challenged. They were led by some strong net play from Riley Outen
and Emily Parrott. The Final scores were 25- 11 and 25- 17. The victory ran their record to (2-0).
On Wednesday, Sept, 26th, the South Charlotte
Lady Shockers Volleyball team traveled the Alexan-
der Graham Middle school to take on a balanced
and scrappy Bulldog team. The contest went back
and forth and was never settled until the third
game of the match. The Bulldogs were able to pull
out a very hard fought match and handed the Lady
Shockers their first loss of the season. Leaders of
the match for the South Charlotte squad were
McKenna Cranford, Madeline McIver, Katie Cross,
and Erin Holtzapple as well as solid contributions
from the entire line-up. The final scores were 16-
25, 25-23, 9-15. The Lady Shockers record now
stands at (2-1) and they play host to Community
House on Monday Oct. 1st.
