Dear Parents,
I had the wonderful opportunity of attending the South Charlotte Musical, Willy Wonka Jr., last evening.
I was overwhelmed with excitement as I watched each and every part. The students were so well-
prepared and they all did an amazing job. I would like to thank the students, Ms. Jenkins, Ms. Bourdon,
and Ms. Mitchell-Harris for a job well done. To FAN, a special thanks to you as well as these type
musicals could not be possible without your financial support. Parents, if you did not catch the
performance last night, make it a point to attend tonight. Tickets are only $7.00.
It is rare that in my Shockwave letter I feature one particular student; however, I have chosen to do this,
as this student has accomplished quite a bit in the past few months and deserves special recognition.
Nathan Murray, one of our fabulous eighth-graders, recently won the Southeastern Championship for
the 200m Breaststroke. Prior to that, he had won the state competition, but of all states represented in
the Southeast, he won. He plans to attend South Mecklenburg next year and will swim there as well. In
addition, he runs the mile in under five minutes and he was a member of the Shocker football team. His
grades are stellar and he plays the viola in orchestra. I am just thrilled to know him and be his principal.
He was modest as he shared his accolades, but that demeanor will take him far as well. He admits that
his size works against him somewhat in swimming competition as he claims he is “short;” however, the
hard work, perseverance and focus on excellence has reaped incredible rewards for him.
Congratulations Nathan. The entire South Charlotte family and I are very proud of you.
As we enter the season of EOGs, sleep and nutrition are key factors in students doing well on these tests.
Of course, the academic preparation is the main point, but feeling physically well is of great importance
also. I ask that your students begin getting to bed early, eating right and attending any tutoring
opportunities possible to prepare. We want to exceed our results from last year and we can do that. All
of the students have worked hard so in this final stretch, let’s go the extra mile to ensure success for
them.
I hope that all of you have a wonderful weekend. As
always, if you have concerns, questions, etc., please reach

you and work with you to resolve the issue, questions, or
concerns.

EOG PROCTORS

We will have a brief training in the Library each morning from 7:30 to 8:15 and then you will go straight to your assigned room. Please plan on staying until noon. We will also have training on Tues-day May 8th at 8:30AM and 2:00PM for any new proctors or anyone that cannot get there by 7:30/7:45 the morning of the EOG.

The teaching profession is in crisis. More than a million highly experienced teachers are nearing retirement. In the next decade, the United States will need 2 million new teachers. Approximately 50% who enter the field leave within five years. When interviewed, teachers report that the two factors that most influence this situation are salaries and the lack of respect, support and value. They often speak of feeling isolated. The National Educa-tion Association reports that too little attention has been given to holding on to the quality teachers...the best and the brightest...the very ones we can't afford to lose.
Action must be taken to counteract this problem. Communities, organizations, corporations and individuals can and must do something to let our strongest and best educators know that they are valued, honored and sup-ported.
The Teaching Fellows Institute will do just that. It is our goal to "Honor, Engage and Inspire" the best teach-
ers in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

EOG Prep and Summer Tutoring Opportunity

South Charlotte vs. Crestdale (3-2) April 16, 2012
On Monday the Shockers beat Crestdale for a second time in a tough
battle with the game ending in a score of 3-2. Crestdale scored the first
goal for us with an accidental own goal which was deflected off of one of
their players originating from a corner kick by Oliver Leo. Defender
Austin Kent was the next to score for the Shockers bringing the ball
down the field and slamming a lethal left footed shot right into the net.
Crestdale scored a quick goal right before the half and then another ty-
ing up the game 2-2. Rudy Vargas scored our winning goal with a tre-
mendous strike right into the center of the net. Congrats Shockers!
Our game against AG has been rescheduled for Monday, May 7th .
On Monday April 23rd we play McClintock at home. Come out and cheer
on our Shockers!
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Coach Curtis and Coach Hansen are very proud of the Lady Shockers for their performance at the meet against Crestdale and Whitewater. They took second overall and the following ladies placed individu-ally:
Gabi Jenkins: 1st place 100m, 2nd place 200m
Cydney Spencer: 1st place 400m, 4th place 100m
Mariza Brooks: 1st place long jump, 2nd place 400m, 3rd place 200m
Emma Love: 2nd place high jump, 2nd place shot put, 4th place discus
Lindsay Lanier: 2nd place 1600m, 2nd place 800m
Laurel Hickey: 3rd place 1600m, 4th place 800m
Maddie DeCramer: 3rd place 800m, 4th place 1600m
Michelle Wilson: 3rd place 55m hurdles
Jayla Taylor: 4th place 55m hurdles
Sarah Shipp: 4th place long jump
4x100m relay team took 2nd place: Rachel Teague, Gabi Jenkins,
Alexis Quattlebaum, Jayla Taylor.
Boys Track & Field
4.19.12 - Meet Results
The Boys Track team had a successful track meet with lots of great performances and PRs. In the over-all team standings, South Charlotte beat Whitewater Middle and came in second to Crestdale. Some highlights of the meet include but aren't limited to: -Logan Sutter with our only first place finish in the mile. He also set a PR in the 800 and finished in second place. -Other second place finishes came to the following: Dan Ta - High Jump, Dylan Taylor - 100m, Joe Krajewski - Shot Put, & the 4 x 200m relay team Dylan Taylor, Nicklas Beckman, Tanner Sutter
& Jesse Chen. -Third place finishers were: Jacob Winters - 1600m, Tanner Sutter - 400m, Patrick Barley - 800, William Jones - Shot Put & Jake Anderson - Long Jump -Fourth place went to: Hayden Blalock - 1600m, Malcum Tatum - 400m, Joe Krajewski - Discus & Jonathan Arnall - Long Jump. More importantly than placing in the top 4 and scoring is beating your own Personal Record (PR). At this point in the season its very tough to beat your PR so any improvement deserves acknowledge-ment. The following beat their PRs for their respective events. -110m Hurdles: Ryan Wilkoff -100m: Dylan Taylor -1600m: Donnell Baker, Hayden Dean, Jacob Winters, Adam Pacholski, Connor Boyce & Connor

The biggest news of the meet (and biggest PR) came from Dan Ta in the high jump. Dan Ta's
previous best in a meet was 4'8" and he man-
aged to not only set a huge PR but also broke
the school record jumping 5'4"! The previous record was a three way tie at 5'3" between Jona-than Paramore, William DeJesus, & Spencer Youngblood. Thank you to those that came out to cheer on the team and to the teachers & parents who volun-teered at our final home meet. Its always great to see the teachers out there at our meets cheering on South Charlotte.

The South Charlotte Sports Report is excited to offer a unique after school basketball prep camp at South Charlotte
Middle School. Our staff of coaches, led by South Charlotte Middle School Head Coach Jason Otey, will lead basket-
ball players through four exciting afternoons of basketball drills, games and competitions. The primary focus of each
activity is to provide quality instruction that will prepare each player for the upcoming season.
Over the last seven years, The South Charlotte Sports Report has hosted over 50 basketball camps. With each camp,
we see more and more return customers. Plain and simple, our basketball camps focus on the development of basket-
ball fundamentals. Without a strong fundamental base, a basketball player will be limited in how far they can advance.
Each camper will receive instruction on shooting, moving without the ball, dribbling, defense, passing and rebounding.
We maintain a low coach to camper ratio allowing the campers to get to know all the coaches on a first name basis.
We also strive to keep campers in the same groups with their friends and other players their age. Our camps are de-
signed to place campers in position to succeed inside the camp and beyond.
The South Charlotte Sports Report Basketball Camp is also designed to provide players of all ages and abilities the
chance to experience success on the basketball court!

South Mecklenburg High School Expo - event for rising freshman
Tuesday April 24 6:30 p.m.
This event, for rising 9th graders and their families, will showcase academic depart-
ments, elective areas, clubs, activities, athletics, and MORE! South Meck student am-
bassadors will be on hand for tours. Administrators, faculty, PTSA and SLT will be
available for questions.
Come when you can and explore your areas of interest at your own pace. The South
Meck community looks forward to welcoming you!
2nd ANNUAL CHARLOTTE MUSEUM MILE TO BE RUN IN UPTOWN CHARLOTTE ON APRIL 21,
2012
(Charlotte, N.C.) -- The 2nd Annual Charlotte Museum Mile, a family-friendly race benefitting the Arts & Sci-ence Council (ASC), will take place on April 21, 2012, starting at 8:00 a.m., near the corner of 11th Street and North Tryon St. Runners will run 5,280 feet heading south along Tryon Street passing McColl Center for Visual Art, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Discovery Place and other cultural facilities and ending at Levine Center for the Arts on S. Tryon Street. Runners will be divided into waves based on projected running time, with races starting every 30 minutes. The course record set in 2011 is 4:23.
Arts and culture will be infused in the event. The fastest runners in each division will receive hand-made awards from Charlotte potter Greg Scott with the overall winners receiving cash prizes and being crowned the Fastest Man in Charlotte™ and Fastest Woman in Charlotte™. Each participant will receive a perform-ance race shirt designed by Charlotte artist Ashley Lathe and many of cultural facilities along the Museum Mile will offer special admission and have scheduled events the day of the race. There will also be a Mini Mile.
The Charlotte Museum Mile was created by Marc Gustafson and his wife Jane. They were inspired to create the race based on their experience and participation in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City in 2010.
“I loved the experience of running down Fifth Avenue and passing all of the New York’s famous museums,” said Marc Gustafson. “When I returned to Charlotte, I immediately began working to create a sight-seeing race in the Center City that was one mile. The street will be closed so it’s a perfect way for participants to see the cultural organizations and facilities along Tryon Street while raising dollars for ASC which invests in those organizations.”
“The Charlotte Museum Mile is a unique opportunity to showcase Charlotte’s cultural facilities while support-ing ASC and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” said ASC President Scott Provancher. “I’m thrilled the race has returned this year and that the proceeds will benefit ASC. “
