By Rabbi Howard Mandell

I would like to begin my column this month by sincerely thanking everyone for having made my Installation, on September 7, such a joyful and meaningful event. One of the things that made it so special for me was the communal nature of the event, with so many contributing in so many different ways--with your time, your ideas, your financial support, etc. Most in attendance stayed for the entire event, from Rabbi Feld’s informative and moving teaching on the Psalms, until the “sweet” end around 9 PM, when dessert was served. I want to offer a special thanks to Jim Shainker and the entire planning committee, Howie Flagler, Howard Spector, Tanya Gould, and Amy Sherr. I also want to express my appreciation to the klei kodesh, the rabbis and other spiritual leaders from the community, for showing their support to the CBI congregation and to me.

I am writing this column as I take a break from my High Holy Day preparation. One of the key themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is “change”, with the emphasis, for me, on Rosh Hashanah being on communal change and on Yom Kippur, individual or personal change. For my column this year, I would like to focus on communal change.

Recognizing that change does not come naturally or easily for many of us, the synagogue leadership and myself have attempted, and will continue to attempt, to be both circumspect and respectful in making changes. Having determined that offering members more opportunities to be together in a joyful and meaningful setting, and creating even more of a “holy community”, one grounded in the Judaism Tradition, to be two of the synagogue’s most important needs, two changes that were made this past year were, first, the addition of additional prayer services followed by communal meals—were we not all taught that “the family that prays…and eats together stays together”—and revitalizing the synagogue’s CBI Cares and Social Justice Committees.

With the Jewish year 5775 soon to be here, this is a good time to begin looking at what we can do next to stabilize, strengthen, and grow the synagogue in the coming year. With communal prayer being such an essential component of synagogue life, I am always looking for ways to make prayer more relevant and meaningful to our members and to those who might be interested in joining.

Sad as it may be, the fact is that Holidays such as Shavuot, Purim, Sukkot, etc., are not nearly as widely celebrated as they once were, resulting in our often struggling to get a minyan for services, especially when these Holidays fall during the work week. With a number of our important prayers, and with the Torah and Haftarah readings dependent on the presence of a minyan (10 Jewish men and/or women), not having a minyan essentially cuts much of the heart and soul out of the service.

Thus, after having carefully weighed the options, the CBI board has authorized the holding of joint services on these Holidays, beginning this year with Sukkot, with our sister synagogue, Temple Emanuel, which has been experiencing many of the same challenges that we have. Recognizing that our services and siddurim are not identical, evening services will be held at Temple Emanuel, using their siddur, and morning services, which is the service with Torah and Haftarah readings, being held in our sanctuary utilizing our siddur. It is the hope of Rabbis Goldstein and Phillips and myself that, by combining services on these Holidays—services will remain separate for the High Holy Days, Shabbat, etc.-- the likelihood of having minyans will be greatly increased, adding to the ruach (“spirit”) and meaning of these services.

An important derivative benefit from joining together on these occasions is that, while one’s primary responsibility will always be to her/his own synagogue, we are also part of the greater Jewish community, and this should help our members meet some Jewish people, whom they may not already know, thus serving to strengthen the overall Jewish community. I experienced this personally when several synagogues got together on the build that was recently held with Habitat for Humanity, and I got to meet and work with several people, whom I may have never otherwise met.

Another important area presently under consideration by the synagogue leadership and myself is how to make Shabbat morning services more relevant, joyful, and meaningful. The number of people attending Shabbat morning services at CBI has, for a variety of reasons, been decreasing steadily over the years, a challenge not unique to CBI. At the present time, for example, unless there is a special Shabbat, there is no guarantee that we will have a minyan, and even when we do, it is usually not until after the Shacharit service

Perhaps some of you have read the book The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible by A.J. Jacobs. In a narrative by turns both profound and funny, Jacobs sets forth his experiences adhering to the oft-times challenging tenets of the Bible as closely as possible. Jacobs has made a career of spending-–and chronicling--periods of his life dedicated to very narrow foci: reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A-Z, following an extreme health regimen to get as healthy as possible, and hosting the Global Family Reunion (GlobalFamilyReunion.com. Sign up: we’re all invited and all related!). In the spirit of Jacobs’ zest for throwing himself so fully into life, let’s challenge ourselves to wholeheartedly commit to something. Let’s declare this The Year of Living Gratefully: One Shul’s Humble Quest to Live in Grateful Relationship with One Another. Each of you was recently asked to submit expressions of gratitude about your Judaism in general or CBI in particular. Many of you did so, and your responses were heartwarming and uplifting. The expressions of gratitude reaffirmed what so many of us cherish about CBI: it is a haimishe shul. In affirmation after affirmation, people expressed gratitude about the strong and lasting friendships they have formed at CBI, the warm and welcoming atmosphere at CBI, and the strong sense of community at CBI. Perhaps one phrase best sums it up: “I appreciate the feeling I get walking into CBI that I’m somehow ‘coming home’.” So many of us have this feeling about CBI. It’s like Cheers: “Where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.” Let’s make this the year in which we express gratitude for the people and programming that gives us this feeling. And let’s make this the year in which we make sure that CBI has that Cheers feeling for everyone. Let’s strengthen our existing relationships, build new ones, and express our gratitude for each and every person we are in relationship with. The more of us there are, and the more tightly we are bound together, the stronger we are. Throughout the year, please continue to let us know what is making you feel grateful. Social Action Committee Many thanks to everyone who has participated in CBI’s Social Action projects during the past few weeks, including the Yom Kippur Food Drive, which gathered food for a local food pantry. A terrific team helped prepare and serve a meal at Lazarus House on Sunday, August 24: Caren Jacobson, Rebecca Fishbein and Mitch Guttentag, Amy Friedman Lee, J.P. Lee, and Rebecca, and Rob, Susannah, and Rachel Abbott. The guests at Lazarus House were so appreciative of the nutritious, home-made meal, and the volunteers found the tour of Lazarus House’s transitional living shelter to be very meaningful. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with this very deserving and worthwhile organization!

We hope you’ll join us for upcoming projects! The next Social Action Committee meeting will take place on Thursday, October 9 from 6:30 – 7:30, and all are welcome. We have many projects ahead for the fall, including our annual participation in Share the Light and Project Ezra, and proposed new projects with Lazarus House. And, of course, we are always looking for new ideas!

The Social Action Committee is serving as a liaison with Welcoming Faiths, a growing coalition of more than 15 LGBTQ-welcoming congregations of faith in the Merrimack Valley. The goal of this lay-led group is to provide a forum for dialogue and action among religious congregations who are committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer and/or Questioning individuals and families. On Tuesday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m., Welcoming Faiths will hold their meeting in the sukkah at CBI. We are as excited to welcome them as they are to meet in the sukkah and learn about Sukkot. All are welcome to participate.

Thank you, as always, for your support of CBI’s social action initiatives. We hope to see you at an upcoming project!

CBI Cares

At his Installation, Rabbi Mandell stated his wish to focus our congregation on adopting the performance of mitzvot, and the following were among the examples he gave:

bikkur cholim – visiting the sick nichum avelim – comforting mourners gemilut chassidim – deeds of loving kindness

As he also observed, "by fulfilling our obligations to each other and to God with love and with joy, we can bring additional holiness into the world and into our lives." Under the sponsorship of the Social Action Committee, the CBI Cares Committee invites each of you to join together in this sacred and joyous endeavor.

The co-chairs of CBI Cares are: Alan Friedman – 978-256-4978 Mitch Guttentag – 978-475-7214 e-mail: [email protected]

Please let us know by phone or e-mail if you would be willing to have us contact you should there be a bereavement, illness, or other situation in our community where you might be able to assist by phoning, visiting, delivering food, etc. A regular commitment is not required. If you volunteer and then are not available at a time when assistance is requested, that will be perfectly understandable. Our goal is to assemble a large enough group of volunteers – ideally, everyone – that each individual will only be called upon occasionally.

Based on the experiences of having been both ill and bereaved in the past few years, the comfort received from the CBI community is of inestimable value … and the satisfaction in providing comfort at such a time is even greater. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

The schedule is:

Erev Sukkot evening services on Wednesday, October 8th at 6pm Temple Emanuel, 7 Haggetts Pond Road

celebrate in the Sukkah following services.

Sisterhood News

On Sunday, September 21 Sisterhood had its kick-off event, featuring a brunch and a presentation by author Jessica Keener. Keener, the author of Night Swim and Women in Bed, spoke candidly about the writing and publishing process, acknowledging that Night Swim took seventeen years to be completed and to find a publisher. Touching

on the tangential Judaism of the family in Night Swim, she asked the group to consider the tension between the synagogue as a source of community and as a source of spirituality—”and noted that increasingly, people see the synagogue as a source of the former, not the latter. It was a thought provoking and enjoyable gathering, and a great start to the New Year. Thank you to Amy Friedman Lee for pulling this lovely event together.

The next Sisterhood event will be on Sunday, October 26—time to be determined. The meeting will feature a brief discussion of how to help Sisterhood grow and reach out to women in the shul and the larger Jewish community. Our activity will be craft centered, with a choice of fun crafts to work on. Few things are as convivial as women working and talking together companionably. Everyone who attends will receive Amish Friendship Bread starter—the perfect example of receiving something good, increasing it, and passing it on to others. Exactly what we are trying to do with Sisterhood!

Hoping for the sweetest Sisterhood year yet,

Tanya Gould, Sisterhood President

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS By Esther Kaufman

As you read this article, we are in the midst of the cycle of fall holidays consisting of Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Succot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. This is a time when we come together as a community to pray, to assess, to atone, to give thanks, and to rejoice. Indeed, we traverse a wide range of human emotions in a few short weeks. We are hopeful and reflective on Rosh HaShanah, solemn and repentant on Yom Kippur, grateful on Succot, and joyful on Simchat Torah. The unifying element in this wide variety of holidays is the sense of community. It is not alone that we mark these special days, but in the company of our extended family, our synagogue community. At Rabbi Mandell’s recent Installation, our community was referred to as a kehillah k’doshah, a holy community. We maintain this model of holiness through our study of the Torah, and in the recitation of our prayers. We also uphold a sense of dignity and sanctity in our interactions with one another. We understand that each of us is an individual, all created b’tzelem elokim, in the image of G-d. We are instructed in the V’ahavta to love the Lord our G-d. We show that love for G-d by doing G-d like things—caring for one another, feeding the hungry, giving clothes to the poor, and donating tzedakah to help those in need. All of these acts are performed in a spirit of goodness, kindness and respect for the individual. The concept of community is instilled in our children from early on in Religious School. The definition of community is a group of people having cultural, religious, ethnic, or other characteristics in common. While we all share a common connection based on our Judaism, our students quickly learn that the CBI community encompasses so much more. It is a group of people who care about each other, and who are respectful of one another. Our Religious School is a place where the children feel comfortable, connected with one another, and with their Jewish heritage. It is a place where others will share in the joy and delight of their achievements, and where they can find comfort and support in difficult times. In short, CBI is a place where they can feel that they truly belong, and can make others feel the same way. As a Religious School, we will be welcoming residents of Marland Place, an assisted living community, to share a Succot dinner with us on October 9 at 4:30 PM. The children have forged a connection with these residents previously by sending them Chanukah cards, and Purim treats. Now, they will have a chance to meet and share holiday experiences in person. At the same time, students will be able to put their welcoming and community building skills into action. Another event in our synagogue family will take place on October 16 when we will celebrate Simchat Torah and the Consecration of several of our students who have never been officially welcomed into our synagogue community. We continue to make the greater Andover community aware of our culture and heritage through our holiday-related story hours at Whole Foods. Our Succot story hour will be on October 7 from 4-5 PM. As we begin a new year of 5775, it is our goal to continue to further the reputation of the CBI community by performing acts of loving kindness, both within the synagogue and outside of it. Let us all remember that each of us has the power l’taken et ha olam, to improve the world one act at a time, thereby enhancing the integrity of our Kehillah K’doshah, our holy community. - Morah Esther

M&M Minyan

Youth Shabbat Morning Services

10am - 12pm Saturday, October 18

Celebrate the story of Creation

as we read the first chapter of the Torah

M&M Minyan is an exciting way to experience the beauty and joy of Shabbat. Religious School students are expected to attend services at least once a month and the Conservative Movement suggests at least 10 times per year. Those that meet this requirement will be treated to a special end of the year field trip—just for fun! M&M Minyan provides community, a chance to practice what students are learning in the classroom, a model for “davening” and of course “oneg” a snack that is the “pleasure” of Shabbat. Traditional nusach is enhanced with modern, upbeat melodies. We use games, drama and

discussion to enliven the morning. These services run from 10am-12pm and then the students will join the congregation for the conclusion of the service.

HIRE-A-USYER If you’re sponsoring a kiddush at CBI and would prefer to enjoy the service rather than spend time in the kitchen, let USY help. The Hire-A-USYer program will set up, serve, and clean up, leaving you free to enjoy whatever occasion you’re celebrating. There is a two server minimum, and the cost per server is $40--$20 of which goes to the server and $20 of which goes to the USY Tikkun Olam fund. For information contact Tanya Gould at [email protected]

When you become a member of Anshe Shem Circle (Circle of Prominence), you are doing an important and wonderful mitzvah. By contributing above your

membership dues, you are performing an act of chesed, loving kindness, by helping families in our

community who cannot afford to pay full dues.

Looking for an opportunity to do even more for CBI?

The last few years have been difficult ones financially for CBI and for many in our community. There are ways you can help. If you are able to contribute an amount above the cost of your membership dues (an area where we are experiencing a significant shortfall), we invite you to do an important and wonderful mitzvah. Help us balance our financial picture by contributing an additional amount when you send in your dues, or at any time of the year. In appreciation, you will be recognized as part of our new Anshe Shem Circle (Circle of Prominence), and you will be acknowledged in the CBI newsletter (or, if you prefer, anonymously). CBI appreciates and values the contributions of all its members. We thank you for taking this opportunity to make a difference!

SISTERHOOD

We are planning lots of wonderful events for the upcoming year. Among activities under

consideration are: another author event, a nature walk, an accessories and household goods exchange (think of it as being like when you pick all the good

items out when you are sorting for the yard sale), bowling, an Orthodox women’s chorus that

performs only for women, a crafting event…….and who knows what else?! Watch your email for

notification of upcoming events.

has concluded, and sometimes not until after the Torah service was to have begun. One of the many options that has been approved by the leadership and is already working well at other

Conservative synagogues across the country is for us to periodically hold a different kind of Shabbat morning service. In larger synagogues, one or more “alternative” services are held Shabbat morning at the same time as the more traditional service. In smaller synagogues, like CBI, since we don’t currently have enough people or space for two simultaneous services, the “alternative” service is held either in lieu of or before the more traditional service. I have been talking with some people, who currently lead such a service at a large Conservative Synagogue here in New England, about their coming to CBI in November to conduct such a service.

If you have any questions about changes currently being considered, or any suggestions about changes that you would like to see made, please do not hesitate to contact either of our co-presidents, Howard Spector and Tanya Gould, Jeff Tye, or myself. Please be assured that the leadership and myself, in introducing change, have been and will continue to be guided by what is in the best interest of the CBI community as a whole, and what is needed to make CBI the truly holy, safe, and caring community that we all want so much for it to be.

May the year 5775 be a Year of Good Health and Blessing for Your Families and You! Shalom Aleichem! Peace Be With You! Rabbi Mandell
