The Vicarage, Heversham, Milnthorpe Tel: 63125 My Dear Friends, It is interesting and, on occasion, disturbing how words change their meanings with the passage of time or are 'hi-jacked' to mean something different. The name 'Christian' has undergone a great change over the centuries until for most people it is divorced from commitment and a practical faith within the worshipping fellowship. Now it is used too often to mean nothing more than a 'nice person'. To suggest anything else leads to the accusation of being divisive and judgemental. Yet divisive is precisely what Christianity is, and to preserve this cutting edge Jesus' own words 'born again' are often used. Originally when the name Christian was first used in Antioch it meant 'born again Christian'. Such a Christian proclaimed Jesus as Lord, took part in learning groups, loved to be with others of the Faith, took part week by week (and often day by day) in the worship and met with others to pray (Acts 2: 42). That is still the definition of a born again Christian to whom only the name 'Christian' can truly be applied. Yes, it is divisive. The divisiveness of one person being a tennis player and another not, of one being a golfer and another not, or of one being a farmer and another not is perfectly acceptable. No one would call themselves a tennis player, golfer or farmer if they did not play tennis or golf, or farm. Yet many like the name 'Christian' when they never speak up
for Jesus, continue to learn, join with other Christians in weekly worship, or pray with others. It is this loose use of the name Christian that is partly behind the shrinking of Christianity in the western world. In the rest of the world, where the name 'Christian' is not used lightly, Christianity is growing rapidly even in the face of horrendous persecution. Commitment is needed. The New Testament does not understand commitment to Jesus without involvement in the worship and life of the Christian community - the local Church. In our western part of the world we are denying the Faith upon which we like to claim our society is founded, and we wonder why it is falling apart. This nation, the world too, needs Christians who are born again of the Spirit of God - they are the only ones who go out to bring others in and they are the only ones the world will take seriously. With every blessing. Yours sincerely,

What a lovely Celebration of Marriage Service we enjoyed together at St Thomas Church on Sunday 14th September, conducted by the Vicar. Designed to commemorate marriage and the blessings of family life, the church was bright with colourful flower arrangements and a display of wedding dresses of the past, along with an array of wedding photographs in the Church Centre. Readings were by Sarah Eccleston (past chorister for 19 years) and Mary Wills, lifelong parishioner, with prayers by Kathleen Dawson. The youngest person present was baby Jamie John Eccleston, age 4 weeks, who slept throughout the proceedings ! The service was arranged by Val Robson and Lorna Clark following
consultation with the Worship Committee. Flowers were by Marjorie Mashiter. The Wedding March played by organist Glyn Hopkins ended the service. Mothers Union At the first new sessional meeting of Milnthorpe-with-Heversham Mothers Union, the service was led by Pat Radcliffe, with Bible reading by Mary Davidson. It was stated that Rena Blight has retired as Deanery Presiding Member, and Shirley Payne nominated. Mrs Radcliffe welcomed back Lady Audland and Mrs Ena Burch, following their stays in hospital, and also Mrs Joan Ellam , transferred from another branch. Secretary Dorothy Hornby announced that an invitation from Barrow Link Branch has been received, inviting our branch to meet their members on 23rd October in Barrow. It was agreed that the M.U. Christmas Party be held on 3rd December at the Blue Bell Hotel. The Revd Ian Smith of the Unitarian Church Kendal was welcomed along with his wife. He sang many songs, including “Memories are made of this”, which he dedicated to any members married over 50 years – Mrs Marian Ball was married 62 years ago. He also told various humorous anecdotes and sayings, and was thanked by Dr Dorothy Williams. Poppy Appeal A Poppy Appeal Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 25th October 10.00 am – 12.00 noon at the Memorial Hall. Poppy appeal house to house collectors are urgently needed. An Irish Concert featuring Helen McCabe and Band held at Dallam School attended by 200 people raised £863.60. Skydive Raised £600 Brave Jean Pemberton, an amputee, completed a tandem skydive at the North West Parachute Centre Flookburgh and with sponsorship raised over £600 towards Lancaster Royal Infirmary’s Orthopaedic Dept. She thanks all who donated towards this.
Horticultural Show The 62nd Annual Horticultural Show organised by the Milnthorpe and District Allotment Society was a great success – in spite of the weather variations diminishing entries in the flower section ! More entries would be welcomed next year in the domestic classes. Members of the Allotment Association keep the flowers blooming in containers outside the church’s west door throughout the year for which we thank them.
Roadshows We have recently been treated to three separate Roadshows held in the square giving information on 1. The Milnthorpe and Heversham First Responders; 2. Milnthorpe Family Centre and IT Suite; and 3. The new County Council Recycling

SAINTS ALIVE! The Saints Alive course starts on Thursday 2nd October at 7.45pm at The Vicarage. The sub-title of the course is 'the Christian life in the power of the Spirit'. In the past it has proved to be of help to both those who are enquiring about the Faith and to those established in the Faith but who would like a 'refresher'. Several people have already signed up. If you would like to know more please do not hesitate to ask.
The Reader Ministry Two of our Readers, Dorothy Williams and Chris Bennett, are doing further training so that they can be authorised by the Bishop to take funerals both in Church and at the Crematorium. Unless a Reader has that authorisation they are not permitted to take funerals either in Church or at a Crematorium without the presence of a priest, and at the present time none of our Readers has that authorisation. As part of that training Dorothy and Chris have already started to assist in the taking of funeral services both in our two Churches and at the Crematorium. This is an important extension of their ministry and one which will be very valuable to our Churches in the future.

Xcelerate in Manchester Hello everyone, I’ve been on Xcelerate now for 6 weeks and love it! The first week we spent trying to find our way around Manchester and getting to know each other. I’m in a house with 10 other girls. That’s a lot of make up. The second week we had teaching on the Evangelist – we have lectures from 9 until 12 every day with guest speakers or our course leaders Steve and Rachel. In the afternoons we have placements – I have Exodus with my church (Saint Bride’s) which is outreach to local kids. We play football and basketball with them and are also helping to make a garden for them next to the church. Another placement I have is a soup run on Sundays for the homeless. I also help in a kids’ club in a primary school and attend a home group in my church. St Bride’s is an Anglican church in a predominantly Asian area – so we sing one song in Urdu and both readings are translated into Urdu. They are really friendly and I was in the music group the second week. There are quite a few young families and young people. I am really enjoying it but really missing Heversham too. Manchester has two Eden buses equipped with DVD players, computers, board games and music that go into deprived areas such as Weaste in Salford for local kids to have somewhere safe to go. It’s amazing!
We were also team leaders in the third week of Festival:Manchester. We had projects such as cleaning up canal areas in Oldham. My team also cleaned a back alley so overgrown that there wasn’t enough space for a wheelie bin to get down. Each night we had gigs with Christian bands such as The Tribe and gave out tickets to anyone we met on the projects. We were split into various ‘hot zones’ where we met before each day’s work started for prayer and worship and again at night. On Saturday and Sunday we had a free party in Heaton Park with Christian bands, evangelists such as Luis Palau speaking and a skate park (which we helped to build!). Overall, about 1800 people made a response and 50,000 were at the festival over Saturday and Sunday. After a day off to recover, we were back having teaching as normal and placements started again. Just to let you know, you are all in my prayers. If anyone has anything they specifically want prayer for, we have a prayer wall in our house – just let me know and I’ll put your name up. Thank you so much for all your support – it’s been incredible. See you at Christmas!

Spotlight on .. .Sport Dallam Table Tennis Club (a section of Dallam Sports Association) has been in existence for six years. Currently we have 30 members of all ages, and will have 7 or 8 teams in the four divisions of the Kendal and District league this season. Last year we won the 3rd and 4th division titles and were runners-up in the 2nd, but we have yet to make any real impact in the top division. To give our best juniors further experience, we put any Under 18 team in one of 5 North West Junior Leagues last year. Winning that has qualified them for the N.W. Premier League. Practice takes place on Thursdays and Fridays – limitation of space restricts us to three tables.
