My dear family of St. Matthew!

Viktor Frankl is someone worth knowing, at least knowing about. His life is a remarkable example of the importance to discover meaning in our lives. He died at the age of 92 in September, 1997. Viktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, a Holocaust survivor, and he became the founder of logotherapy (literally “healing through meaning”). From among some 40 books he authored, he is most noted for his best-selling book “Man’s Search for Meaning” based on his experiences in various Nazi concentration camps.

Marching in the snow with other prisoners in one of these Nazi concentration camps, cursed and kicked by guards, he remembered the image of his wife with a clarity, as he remembered, “more luminous than the sun that was beginning to rise.” For the first time in his life, this thought occurred to him: “that love is the ultimate and highest goal to which man can aspire.” In that instant, he recalls, “I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.”

Pope St. John Paul the Second lived through that terrible time — as a matter of fact, he grew up into adulthood as a son of nation crushed by two totalitarian regimes in a row — and, nevertheless, he could still preach that love is the “fundamental and innate vocation” of every human being. As retired Archbishop Charles Chaput summarizes, “This vocation (or ‘calling,’ from the Latin verb vocare) is the heart of the Christian faith. Catholics believe that each human life has a unique but interrelated meaning. We are created by the God who is the source of love itself; a God who loved the world so fiercely that he sent his only Son to redeem it. In other words, we were made by Love, to receive love ourselves, and to show love to others. That’s why we’re here. That’s our purpose. And it has very practical consequences — including the political kind.” When Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?” and Peter answers yes, it’s no surprise, right?, that Jesus immediately follows up with: “Then feed my sheep” (Jn 21:17). As Archbishop Chaput says, “God loves us always. We can choose to ignore that. All of the damned do. But if we claim to love him, it’s an ‘if/then’ kind of deal, with obligations of conduct and personal honesty just like any good marriage or friendship.”

With God, it’s not just an “I-Thou” type of relationship (not just “me and Jesus”!) — it’s more like an “I, Thou — and everybody else” kind of arrangement. Archbishop Chaput continues, “...our faith has social as well as personal implications. And those social implications include the civil dimension of our shared life; in other words, the content of our politics…. Christians in general and Catholics in particular do not, and should not, seek to ‘force’ their religious beliefs on society,” Archbishop Chaput continues. “But working to form the public conscience is not coercion any more than teaching the difference between poison and a steak is a form of bullying. Actively witnessing to and advancing what we believe to be true about key moral issues in public life is not ‘coercion.’ It’s honesty. And it’s also a duty — not only of faith but of citizenship.” This basic way of understanding ourselves vis-à-vis other people (namely, we are ourselves created as social and political people), is clearly expressed in our Catechism of the Catholic Church, referencing two of St. Paul’s letters: “It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom… (paragraph 2239). Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one’s country… (paragraph 2240).”

    Sisters in Christ

    Dedication of Pro-Life Monument

Thank you Fr. Gregor for dedicating the Pro-Life

monument. It’s been 20 years since the CCW donated

this monument to the parish. The love of Our Blessed

Mother and Her Love for all of God’s children surrounds us.

    And another thank you

To all who have worked so hard over the summer and fall

to enhance the parish grounds - thank you for your

donation of time, talent and treasure. It looks lovely.

    Undy Sunday

Please consider making a donation to this

worthy cause. Catholic Charities needs our

needs our support more than ever this year.

Thought for the Week — Our most important prayer is just

    two words - Thank you.

We have some work to do, if you haven’t already done so: have you compared the Democratic and Republican platforms? More specifically, have you looked at records and statements of our local officials who are also on the ballot? I have actually looked up and viewed the November 3rd sample ballot which I will be filling out for my district at dupagecounty.org (for me, it’s Bloomingdale 084-0178 Precinct), and I have seen the six candidates for President of the United States, the five candidates for U.S. Senate on my ballot, the two U.S. House of Representatives candidates, and all the rest of the candidates ending with the Judicial Retentions on the ballot as well as the Propositions which are the local statements that would become law if a majority voted yes on them. I also checked online to make sure I am registered to vote in the upcoming election, where is my polling place, and what are the hours that I can vote. These are my duties as a Catholic and as a citizen of Illinois, one of the fifty United States of America.

We live in a representative democratic country (republic). Since so many things/activities/decisions cannot be voted on by everyone everyday (which would be a true “democracy”), we elect representatives to vote for us for a certain period of time, whether, two or four or six years, or more if they are already incumbents. This is our responsibility, because it comes from our vocation to love, to love one another, to love our neighbor as ourselves, to love God above all things. We find our truest and deepest meaning in this expression of true love.

We are citizens who have co-responsibility for society, which especially obliges us who live in a democracy and who must elect representatives to run the State on our behalf. It’s true that the duty to vote obliges depending on the issue and the worthiness of the candidates, but it is more seriously obliged when a good candidate is opposed by an unworthy one. For example, one may not vote for an enemy of religion or freedom, except, in this case, to exclude a worse enemy of religion and freedom. In such a case, the exclusion of the worst candidate is the object which is intended, not the evils the less bad candidate might do. In determining which candidate is a threat to religion and liberty, or, which of several candidates the worse threat is, non-negotiables issues outweigh negotiable issues, since, 1) Non-negotiables concern certain truths and are always morally applicable, while 2) Negotiable policy issues involve differing opinions about the best means to the end in complex circumstances. That’s the work we as citizens cannot ignore. May God bless you in your work as a good Catholic and a good citizen! Blessings of shalom and joy and good health for all, especially our dear young people who seek the good things that lead to lasting happiness and true love and meaning! In the living, loving, giving, and caring Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Joseph,

    Fr. Gregor

big project, bricks and mortar, dirt and flowers, all to

make the sign more attractive and welcoming. A job

Some Catholic parents -- in fact too many Catholic parents -- are willing to sacrifice a good part of their income to get a good moral education for their children, but don’t follow it up at home with prayer, discussion, and regular participation in the Liturgy. Yet, that’s where the really crucial Catholic education always takes place. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Living The Catholic Faith, Reprinted by permission of Franciscan Media
