Leoš Janáček’s dramatic Glagolitic Mass is set to a ninth century
Old Church Slavonic text. With its highly individual synthesis of thunderous brass outbursts, rhythmic energy, radiant melodies and interludes of rapt contemplation, the work has established itself as a unique contribution to the choral repertoire.

ANOTHER NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS and SCROOGE with seasonal works by Liszt,Tchaikovsky and others
Simon Callow (narrator)RTÉ Concert Orchestra Royal Ballet SinfoniaGavin Sutherland
The Christmas net is cast wide in this captivating collection of
seasonal music. John Fox has crafted a delightful Carol Fantasia. Bryan Kelly’s Scrooge is an action-packed Dickens compression, brought to visceral life by esteemed actor Simon Callow, who also narrates Philip Lane’s Another Night Before Christmas, an update by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy of the classic poem.
SLEEP, HOLY BABEA Collection of Christmas LullabiesBlossom StreetHilary Campbell
This programme goes beyond the more usual Christmas carolrepertoire while keeping the traditions and atmosphere of the season intact. Blossom Street is a
popular and ambitious young vocal ensemble, and their flexibility of style is ideal for a selection from the new Shorter House published collection which ranges from the ancient to the brand new. This fine recording will be a first choice for originality this Christmas.

Long considered lost, the two entirely distinctive versions of Bruno Maderna’s strikingly expressive 1942 Piano Concerto here receive their premiere recording. Maderna was still immersed in the world of Bartok as a brilliant young graduate, and this influence is again strong in the more complex and intricate Concerto for two pianos and instruments.

A virtuoso pianist and renowned conductor in his day, Wilhelm Stenhammar achieved early success with his magnificently
wide-ranging and Brahmsian Piano Concerto No. 1. After many years of mixed fortunes as a composer he found his personal voice in the remarkable Piano Concerto No. 2. Conceived as a single span, this vividly affirmative romantic masterpiece was the wellspring for his Serenade (8.572186) and Symphony No. 2 (8.553888). Award-winning soloist Niklas Sivelöv has also recorded Stenhammar’s solo piano works (8.553730). 8.5722598.572642

Charles DICKENSHard Times (unabridged)
Read by Anton Lesser
‘NOW, what I want is, Facts.’ One of Dickens’s most famous opening lines sets the scene for this powerful novel which questions the harsh, rational attitudes predominating in a world of fierce industrial growth. Dickens vividly presents industrial
Coketown — a quintessential northern English mill town in the 19th century — and the overbearing figure of Mr Thomas Gradgrind with his utilitarian philosophy; and contrasts it with the right of every person to enjoy life regardless of social class. Particularly praised by renowned English critic John Ruskin (1819–1900), this moral fable is arguably Dickens’s most significant work.
Mervyn PEAKEThe Gormenghast TrilogyMaeve GILMORETitus Awakes (from a fragment by Mervyn Peake, abridged)
Read by Rupert Degas
The Gormenghast Trilogy was one of the most unusual cult cycles of the 20th-century. In this surreal, darkly comic fantasy
telling the story of Titus, 77th Earl of Groan, Mervyn Peake created a vivid world with strong characters enveloped in intrigue and fearful intent. Here are the three novels completed by Peake, and a fourth, a completion of a fragment left at his early death in 1968. Rupert Degas, an astonishingly versatile and compelling reader, reads all four books.

BUSONI Piano Concerto in C Major Op.39
Roberto Cappello, pianoCorale Luca MarenzioOrchestra Sinfonica di Roma Francesco La Vecchia
Busoni’s monumental Piano Concerto was completed in 1904 and remains the longest piano concerto to have been heard in
public. He thought of the work as his ‘Italian Symphony’ but this Concerto for piano, orchestra and male chorus is an unclassifiable product, and an extraordinary synthesis of Austro-German and Italian impulses.
GRIEGMusic for String OrchestraFrom Holberg’s Time / Lyric Suite
Malmö SymphonyBjarte Engeset
Grieg’s beautiful works for string orchestra often owe their origin topoetic inspiration or to mountain vistas. Some were based on pianooriginals, including the Holberg
Suite, a masterpiece of invention. All of these pieces show Grieg’s assimilation of Norwegian folk culture and his lyrical mastery, through which he sought to ‘give expression to the hidden harmonies in our folk melodies’. 8.5724038.572523
Peter WHITFIELDThe History of Western Art
Read by Sebastian Comberti
What is art ? Why do we value images of saints, kings, goddesses, battles, landscapes or cities from eras of history utterly remote from ourselves? This history of art shows how painters, sculptorsand architects have expressed the
belief-systems of their age; religious, political and aesthetic.
H. Rider HAGGARDShe (abridged)
Read by Bill Homewood
H. Rider Haggard’s novel about a supremely beautiful but vindictive African goddess by the name of ‘She’ is one of the best-selling books of all time. This wonderful multi-layered novel is at once a disarming imaginative fantasy, a fast-paced
adventure story and a fascinating examination of the themes of death, sexuality and power.

Tristan PERICH1-BIT Symphony
Tristan Perich Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony is an electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip. Though housed in a CD jewel case, 1-Bit Symphony is not a recording in the traditional sense; it literally “performs” its music live when

Across the Sea – Chinese-American Flute Concertos
Sharon Bezaly (flute) Singapore Symphony OrchestraLan Shui (conductor) The three composers represented on this disc are all resident in the USA, but have their roots across the Pacific Ocean, in China. Philosophical, musical and literary
aspects of this Chinese heritage are in evidence in the works recorded here. Zhou Long has composed his Five Elements inspired by the traditional Chinese concept of the five ‘elemental energies’ (wu xing): metal, wood, water, fire and earth. In Zhou Long’s flute concerto each element is represented in a separate movement in which the activities of yin and yang are manifested as cyclic changes of nature regulating life on earth. VIVALDI – Concertos for Strings
Arte dei Suonatori It is a familiar fact that Antonio Vivaldi was a prime mover in the creation of the solo concerto, but what is less well known is that he also was the leading exponent of the older concerto a quattro – music in four parts, with several
players to a part, intended for what we nowadays would call a string orchestra with continuo. As Vivaldi expert Michael Talbot explains in his informative liner notes, these works are notable not only for their beauty, but also for their experimental character and for providing the most important examples of fugal writing in Vivaldi’s

and as chief executive of the Finnish National Opera. With such a background, it is not surprising that as a composer he is highly eclectic – a quality which Kuusisto has embraced wholeheartedly, comparing the result to ‘a stew that I am constantly stirring.’

The Father, the Son and the Godfather
Paradiso Musicale(Dan Laurin, recorder; Henrik Frendin viola; Mats Olofsson, cello; Anna Paradiso, harpsichord)
The Father, the Son and the Godfather is a snapshot from a time when art music escaped from the courts and churches. Domestic music-making
in the company of close friends became a treasured extension of social interaction, and the resulting boom in ‘market opportunities’ offered composers a tremendous freedom in their choices of genres and styles, as demonstrated by this colourful programme.

Four modern masters explore the musical possibilities of combining the recorder and choir!
Featuring the virtuoso Danish National Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Stephen Layton.
Recorded in state-of-the-art Super Audio Sound!
The “idea” of combining the recorder with a choir is certainly nothing new; the recorder has joined the human voice in song for almost as long as the instrument has existed. The recorder is in a sense the closest instrument to the human voice, producing a pure sound without mechanisms, reeds or elaborate mouthpieces to alter the tone. However, until recently, few contemporary composers have explored the expressive potential that this combination can deliver.

Sono Luminus has once again partnered with the Ames Piano Quartet to create their latest release, Hahn - Schmitt - Dubois, a celebration of the masterful work of composer Théodore Dubois and two of his most gifted students, Reynaldo Hahn and Florent Schmitt.
The Ames Piano Quartet, the resident chamber music ensemble at Iowa State University, holds a distinctive position in the chamber music field as one of the few professional touring piano quartets in the world. The combination of their lush string sound, blended with the orchestral quality of the piano, produces an exquisite and rare sonority. The Washington Post aptly described it as “one of the most heavenly combinations of instruments around.”

JANÁČEK
Piano MusicOn an Overgrown Path; Sonata; In the Mists
Rudolf Firkušvny
A comparatively tiny body of music – fitting on one CD – Janáček’s piano music may lie less easily under the fingers than (to cite a contemporary miniaturist) that of Anton Webern, but it’s
affecting and intriguing out of all proportion to its size, fromthe violent Sonata inspired by a brutally quelled demonstration of social unrest, through the elliptical tonepoem In the Mists, to the almost diary-like intimacy of From an Overgrown Path.

BRUMEL
Missa: ‘Et ecce terrae motus’; Dies Irae
Huelgas Ensemble, Paul Van Nevel
The most famous work of this 15th-century French polyphonist, the ‘Earthquake’ Mass is named after a plainchant, but perhaps also refers to the nickname given to his formidable employers, the Duke Alfonso d’Este of Ferrara. Brumel’s waves of immaculate multi-voice polyphony may impress us now, but the principal reason for the Mass’s survival at all is the esteem in which it was held in its day.

MEYERBEER / STRAVINSKYFrederick Ashton
Les Patineurs; Divertissement; Scènes de ballet
Darcey Bussell & Jonathan Cope, Leanne Benjamin & Carlos Acosta, Miyako Yoshida, Ivan Putrov, Steven McRae, Tamara RojoRoyal Ballet, Barry Wordsworth
Founder choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Frederick Ashton created more than 10 ballets over a 60 year career. Showcasing three of his shorter works, this disc reflects the breadth of his sophisticated, elegant and widely popular style. Les Patineurs evokes the Edwardian skating rink, with all its youthful charm and humour, in contrast to Scènes de Ballet where sharp geometric shapes and the music of Igor Stravinsky are combined to create perhaps Ashton’s most modernist work. Divertissements, a collection of eight short dances, features some of Ashton’s most lyrical choreography, including pas de deux set to Romantic masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Massenet.

Daniel Barenboim (piano)
