A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR ORDER

The order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken was founded in the seventhcentury by Saint Wilfred, a bishop of England. He established the firstconvent and school known as the Wilfred Academy. His motto was "Wedon't teach beauty, we radiate it!" Many years later, a small group ofpioneering sisters set out for America to establish a motherhouse inCleveland. But they got off the plane in Newark by mistake. The orderwas "found" by the Newark Airport Police and the new motherhousewas established in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was at that time that theOrder of St. Wilfred elected to change the name to the Little Sisters ofHoboken and they have been affectionately known as the "Little Hobos"ever since. It was from this convent that Sister Mary Regina, SisterMary Hubert and Sister Robert Anne set sail for the Mediterranean toestablish the leper colony. Today the order has both nuns and brothersas members - all doing various good works in the Diocese of Newark. They also operate Mt. St. Helen's School in Hoboken.

A NOTE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS

Sister Mary Regina, a native of Ireland, is to the outside world a modelMother Superior. But to those who know her, she is an outrageous,quick-witted soul who knows how to get a laugh. She tries to convinceyou that she is strict, but everyone knows that her "bark is worse thanher bite"!

Sister Mary Hubert is a kind person who always tries to be under-standing and diplomatic. She teaches the Novices the ground rules, andis supposed to be dignified. But with the slightest bit of encouragement, she is ready to kick up her heels.

Sister Robert Anne is a tough, streetwise nun who has a heart of gold. All the kids adore her because she speaks their language. And she canhit a baseball "out of the park".

Sister Mary Amnesia is the picture of innocence. She cannot rememberher past and so looks at each new day with a childlike joy.

Sister Mary Leo had been an aspiring dancer before she entered theconvent and is always eager to display her talent. She is veryimpressionable because she is young and can easily be led astray.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Nuns get a bad rap. So many of you believe the common cliches-that Nuns are strict eductors, caring missionaries and really nicereligious women. And you know, Nuns ARE fine educators, caring, brave missionaries and they ARE really nice religious women. However, we often fail to see the real person behind the habit.Any of you who knows a Nun beyond her official capacity knows thatshe has many individual traits which the habit ultimately can't hide.

"NUNSENSE" strips away the habit (so to speak) (go to Confessionfor thinking that) and shows us how these Sisters struggle to reconcilewho they are with the person God calls them to be. You won't mistakethe obvious intent of this show-to make you laugh; but don't lose sightof the human-ness of these Sisters.

Most of us love and respect Nuns for their vocation; this show willhopefully let you appreciate them as people, too.

Sincerely,Kevin CormierDirector

WHO'S WHO IN OUR CASTSISTER MARY REGINA, prior to taking her vows, was MARGEHAND who makes her 28th appearance in a WVLO production. She is the recipient of 6 ERMA Awards for her roles in "GoodNews", "Showboat", "Fiddler On The Roof", "Music Man","Oklahoma!"and last season's "Man of La Mancha". Marge alsowon the Inner City Circle Award for "70, Girls, 70". Her long listof theatrical credits includes major roles with SJCLO, West BayOpera, EI Camino Opera, SCP, LGCP, Manhattan Playhouse,MVCT, Foothill College and Celebrity Players. Marge contracts

her time for computer data entry and performs regularly with Mystery By Design. She still finds time to write songs with her partner, Ray Toney, & serve asPresident of the Quota Club of Los Gatos, which focuses on service to the speechand hearing impaired. We always enjoy having Marge in our cast.

SISTER MARY HUBERT is the former TAMMY NELSON,appearing in her 4th production for WVLO. Her very first stageappearance was in our production of "Sugar", then she returnedfor "My Fair Lady" and her ERMA award-winning performancein "Irene". Since then, she has been playing the Melodramacircuit at the Gaslighter Theater and Big Lil's Cabaret. In her"spare" time, Tammy is a manicurist at Monet's Hair & Nails andwe are delighted to have Tammy back on our boards (emery oracting)!!

SISTER ROBERT ANNE, prior to entering the Convent, wasLisa Marie Ellison, who made her first stage appearance asMonica Breedlove in "The Bad Seed". But we are very pleasedto report her most recent credits have improved considerably!A native of Wisconsin, this will be Lisa's 12th Californiaproduction and the third for WVLO, the others being "Man of LaMancha" & "Music Man". She has also appeared in SCP's"Chicago" and SDG's "Sugar". She enjoys meeting herbusiness associates from many different cultures as the Senior

Administrator of International Sales for Ready Systems. Lisa and her "flashy"camera always enhance every production she does and we know this "habit" mayhelp her find her "Romeo".

SISTER MARY AMNESIA is said to resemble Jane Sayre-Box,a veteran performer with WVLO, since this marks her fifthproduction. Our regular members will remember Jane as Prin-cess Puffer in this season's "Drood", as well as her portrayalsof the Baker's Wife in "Into The Woods", Fruma Sara in "FiddlerOn The Roof" and Clementina in "The Desert Song". Her othercredits include Josephine in "HMS Pinafore" & Pitti Sing in"Mikado" for G&S. She is an Administrative Secretary at ESLand says this is the most difficult role she has ever done. Butwith her talent, she makes it all look very easy.

Page 9: obHill Would - WVLO Nunsense.pdf · of the Baker's Wife in "Into The Woods", Fruma Sara in"Fiddler On The Roof" and Clementina in "The Desert Song". Her other credits include Josephine

SISTER MARY LEO, before joining our Order, was RichelleRichards, who marks her seventh production with WVLO. Ourregulars have seen her in "Some Enchanted Evening", "Show-boat" "South Pacific", "42nd Street", "Anything Goes" & "DamesAt Sea". But her talents have not been limited to our stage, shehas also performed for SDG, SCP & SJCLO. She may beplaying the role of a novice but with 16 years of dance - ballet, tap & jazz, she is certainly no novice to dancing and was thelogical choice to become our first ballerina nun (the highlight ofher career so far). As Events Coordinator for Age of California,

Richelle hopes to continue administrative planning and social events. And wehope she continues to bring her wonderful talents to our productions.

WHO'S WHO IN OUR ALTERNATE CASTSISTER MARY REGINA, prior to taking her vows, was KathyRussell, making her debut with WVLO, but is no stranger totheater. Her theatrical credits include "Sound of Music", "SheLoves Me" and the roles of Vera Charles (her favorite role) inSDG's "Mame", and Mrs. Upson in SJCLO's "Mame". Kathyworked with SJCMT for 11 years and served as SummerConservatory Director and Board President. A native ofCalifornia,a graduate of Notre Dame High School and a formerstudent of the College of Notre Dame, she is currently theOffice Manager for Bruce Anderson, DDS. No wonder her smile is always sobright! Welcome, Kathy!

returning.

SISTER MARY HUBERT is the former Cheryl Canning, anewcomer to WVLO, but a veteran performer. She hasproduced and performed in over 30 plays and musicals duringher 20 years in the performing arts and is currently theManaging Director for LAYT. Last year she portrayed SisterHubert for MVCT. And with her BS in Nursing, she keeps verybusy. The highlight of her career to date was opening for BBKing at Harrah's-Lake Tahoe. We hope that now Cheryl hasmade her debut with WVLO, she will get into the "habit" of

SISTER ROBERT ANNE, prior to entering the Convent, wasBarbara Savage, who joins us for her third production withWVLO, "Irene" and her most recent role as Antonio in lastseason's "Man of La Mancha". With a BA in Music from SJSU,her other credits include appearances in "HMS Pinafore" &"Pirates of Penzance" for G&S as well as several otherproductions in the Bay Area. Barbara's father, Clarence (Bud)was one of our orchestra's finest clarinetists for many yearsbefore he moved away. It is a pleasure to have Barbara backon our stage again.

SISTER MARY AMNESIA is said to resemble Anneka VanMastrigt. A student of acting and stage technique in high schooland college, Anneka returns in her seventh production forWVLO; her former performances were in "Sound of Music","Kismet", "Oklahoma!", "Into The Woods", "Fiddler On TheRoof" and "The Merry Widow". She most recently appeared in"Pirates of Penzance" with G&S. She was fortunate to haveattended the New Year's Eve Kaiser Ball in Vienna and saysshe plans to return to school (she studied music at SJSU) to

study physical therapy. She never mentioned where she learned the art ofventriloquism, but it is one more achievement to add to her never-ending list oftalents.

SISTER MARY LEO, before joining our Order, was the formerClaire Cormier, who marks her fifth show with WVLO, her mostrecent as a belly dancer in "Man of La Mancha"; but oursubscribers will remember her as Chava in "Fiddler On TheRoof", Florinda in "Into The Woods" and one of the nuns in"Sound of Music". In addition to earning her BA in Theater Artsat Cal State Fullerton, Claire has also performed in "TwelfthNight", "You Can't Take It With You" and "5th of July". Shecompleted her legal courses at Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley andpassed the California Bar Exam last year. She works for McCutchen, Doyle, Brown& Emerson and recently, in her first trial, won a $13.2 Million judgment for herclients. Not bad, Claire, and now she will fulfill another dream, tapping in a show! What a versatile and talented "novice".
