Message from the Principal

It is hard to believe that it is June and another school year is drawing to a close. Time has certainly flown by and our students have grown academically, socially and physically. It is amazing to see the changes that take place in a child’s life over the course of ten months. The grade eights are preparing for their last month at Oakwood School. They are just about ready to make the transition to their high schools. We are very proud of all our students and their many accomplishments. I am also proud of the staff, as they constantly strive to improve their craft to benefit the students. Thank you to parents and staff for continuing to work together to enhance the children’s education at Oakwood. Let’s have a great final month of school!

Bus Changes for September 2017

Parents who know there are going to be changes in their

child’s pick up or drop off transportation for next year, are

asked to call the office to make arrangements for those

changes before the end of June. This will

ensure a smoother start up in September

when the transportation department is at

it’s busiest.

Library Year End Inventory

In order to complete the entire

library inventory process by the

end of June, it is essential that

all books be returned by June

8th.

Parents are asked to check with

their children and ensure that all library books are ac-

counted for and returned by this date. We thank you for

your cooperation and assistance.

Talent Show

Student’s Council has been

preparing for a talent show. If

there is enough interest, with

observation of hard work and

dedication, the show will go

on. The Talent Show date has

been set for June 15th. A final

decision will be made on

Friday June 2nd.

Final Bike Night, we had lots of Fun!

DSBN Heritage Fair Update

Congratulations to Turner Clarke for his outstanding project on Vimy Ridge.

Turner was one of only three students chosen to be an

Ontario Provincial Heritage Fair Ambassador and will

represent DSBN at the Ontario Provincial Fair. All 3

students were given certificates and gift cards to recog-

nize their hard work and extraordinary displays.

Good Luck at the Provincial’s Turner!

2017 Fun Pass

This summer, celebrate Ontario’s 150th anniversary by planning a trip to

Ontario’s attractions with the 2017 Fun Pass.

To help families celebrate this milestone, we are expanding the Fun Pass so that two children, not one, get free admission to 18 popular attractions when accompanied by one paying adult or senior. Parents also save $5 on a daily parking permit at most Ontario provincial parks.

Simply bring a coupon – found in the 2017 Fun Pass booklet or in June at Ontario.ca/funpass – to any participating attraction.

Visit our website in June for more information about the Fun Pass program and to download the e-pass. And make sure to watch for the 2017 Fun Pass with your kids’ report card in June!

Jump Rope for Heart

Once again our campaign for Heart and Stroke was outstanding. Our generous Oakwood community donated a total of almost $1300.00 to this worthwhile cause. Although it the weather wasn’t coopera-tive, and our event date had to be changed, our students had great time par-ticipating in all the fun activities.

Mrs. Tonnos would like to thank the staff and parent volunteers for all your help making this event a giant success.

HOW TO GET 2017 BACK TO SCHOOL STUDENT

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) is a consortium between the District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board. The mandate of NSTS is to plan and administer safe, efficient and effective transportation services for the students of Niag-ara.

On August 21, 2017 NSTS will post specific back to school transportation arrangements for each student enrolled at the school boards, including bus route numbers, stop locations and times. Eligibility information is also available through the portal and walking directions are avail-able if your child lives within the walk zone of the school and is not eligible for transportation service.

Please visit www.nsts.ca and sign-in to the secure parent portal to get your child’s student transportation information. To sign-in to the portal you will need your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) which can be found on their report card. While signed-in, please subscribe to the delay and cancellation module for direct and timely emails regarding student transportation that impacts your child.

Changes to home, pick-up or drop-off addresses must be made through your child’s school. During the summer you may notify NSTS of address changes so we can make sure a bus stop is available for your child to start the school year, however, NSTS is not authorized to change student address information.

With the availability of the secure parent portal, NSTS will not mail student transportation notic-es with the exception of Kindergarten students or new students to the system who do not have an OEN to sign-in to the portal.

Please contact your school or NSTS if you have questions regarding your child’s transportation arrangements.

Phone: 905-349-0290 Website: www.nsts.ca Email: [email protected]

SEPTEMBER SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Most essentials are supplied by the District School Board of Niagara. It would be greatly appreciated if par-

ents would encourage their children to handle texts carefully and to use notebooks and supplies wisely. In

cases when school texts or library books are lost or damaged by a student, a nominal charge will be levied

for its replacement.

One of our most frequently asked questions posed by parents in the first weeks of school is, “What school

supplies will my child need to purchase for the use in his/her classroom?” Here is a list of supplies by grade
