First things first—a big thank you to all the amazing volunteers who made our annual auction such a success. Special thanks to Event Coordinator Amanda Graham, Office Administrator Sceni

Foster, and our auction committee Chair Tony Salas. You went above and beyond, and we appreciate it. Another example of how you can make a difference by not being afraid to do things differently.

Do we do things differently here at the Lacey Chamber of Commerce? You bet we do—even how we determine our year. Some organizations

do their year like the calendar, from January to December. Some do theirs as a fiscal year. We do ours from November to October.

Why?

Because we decided to, that’s why. We’re entrepreneurs, and the key characteristic of an entrepreneur is we do things in new ways. We buck the trends, and we have faith in our own vision and our own energy. When other people have given up, we get things done.

Who else would have the optimism to start a business against all odds? Who else would have the belief to think their idea will set them above the crowd and make them a comfortable living? It’s no wonder small business is the cornerstone of our economy. And no wonder we’re the first to pull up our bootstraps and get busy with the business of making our economy run.

Consumer confidence may drive our economic engine, but entrepreneurs supply the high-octane optimism that boosts the power of that confidence. As I look forward to my year as your president I am certain of one thing, this year is going to be great. Because we are going to make it great. Because we are different. We are entrepreneurs. And we are the Lacey Chamber of Commerce.

Happy New Year!

Quality, afford-able health i n s u r a n c e

for business owners and their employees continues to be one of the greatest chal-

lenges for large and small businesses. Over the past ten years, health insur-ance premiums have risen 131% while workers’ earnings have increased only 38% during that same period according to a study done by Kaiser/HRET. Even with recently enacted health insurance reform, significantly bending the cost curve over the next several years will be difficult.

As a member of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce one of your benefits of mem-

bership is the opportunity to evalu-ate and enroll in the Business Health Trust (BHT) program if you employ 2-149 employees. In place for over four decades, the BHT program offers an array of medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D, disability, and other programs to meet your business objectives and employee benefit needs. This benefit pro-gram provides competitive group rates through contracts with the largest and most respected insurance carriers in the state of Washington, such as: Regence Blue Shield, Group Health, Washington Dental Service, Dental Health Services, Regence Life and Health, Wellspring, and more. You can be assured that all plans offered are in compliance with healthcare reform mandates.

The one-stop shopping aspect allows for combined billing and eligibility, with COBRA administration provided as a value-added service. All insurance plan summaries and forms are avail-able on-line 24/7 with links to the BHT insurance companies for easy look-up of network providers.

BHT…it’s good for business and employ-ees and only available to Chamber members—and only available through trained accredited brokers who are also Chamber members.

Well, we just completed our last Welcome Home Picnic for the 4-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team on October 7. Overall, I think

we easily fed another 5,000 soldiers and raised enough funds to pay for the cost of food, plus provide the enter-tainment. During the past two months, we held three Welcome Home picnics for a total of approximately 15,000 soldiers. Now we can sit back and enjoy the rest of the month and take the time to learn more about I Corps’ new commanding general, LTG Curtis M. Scap-

arrotti, who just arrived from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as the commanding general for the 82nd Airborne Division. Welcome LTG Scap-arrotti, we look forward to embracing you in the Lacey community!

Later this month, I will have the opportunity to interact with him personally at the Association of the United States Army’s conference and at the Army’s Ten Miler in front of the Pentagon. I promise to take many pictures and share them with all of you during next month’s edition. I will also tell you more about LTG Scaparrotti and how the I Corps team did during the Ten Miler. Go, I Corps team!

The year 2011 is just around the corner. My next goal is to assemble a small committee to plan a barbeque for the Air Mobility Command Rodeo. The Lacey Chamber plans a bar-beque for the home team, which includes about 200 Airmen. If any of you are interested in serv-ing on this committee or donat-ing food items for the barbeque, please e-mail me at: [email protected].

Finally, please come join us at the next Military Affairs Commit-tee meeting on November 9. We have military representatives there each month, but very few Chamber members. The meet-ing begins at 7:30 a.m., and it’s held at the Hawks Prairie Res-taurant. In November, we will have the leadership from the 446 Airlift Wing (the McChord Field Reserve Unit) attend to talk about their mission. I hope to see you all there.

Thank You for Your Support and EncouragementWritten by Mike Beehler, Executive Director, Lacey Chamber of Commerce

Thank you, C h a m b e r members

and staff. I appre-ciate the support and encourage-ment I have received from the Lacey Chamber board, staff, and members in the first month of my

tenure as your interim Executive Director. The Lacey area is a wonderful community in which to live, be productive, and contribute to the success of our neighbors. We are for-tunate to have the natural resources of our community’s beauty around us every day. The entrepreneurial sprit is alive and pros-pering in Lacey. I continue to be impressed with the spirit of giving and community

service by our members as well. I want to assure you that my service as an interim director is an opportunity for me to assist the businesses in our community in con-tinuing to be vital contributors to the eco-nomic vitality within our region.

I believe that the Lacey Chamber is uniquely poised to be a partner with both public and private entities to foster economic growth, to provide networking opportunities for business professionals, and to sustain the sprit of community service which enhances our quality of life. Please join with me in ensuring that the future of our business community is bright, enduring, and ever so prosperous. Please call upon me at any time if you have questions or if I can be of assistance. I assure you I will also rely on you for the success of our Chamber’s efforts as well.

The Lacey Chamber of Commerce has a strong tradition of welcoming new mem-bers and encouraging mutually beneficial interactions. I have felt welcomed, and I hope to be a part of those beneficial inter-actions on behalf of the Chamber. Chamber of Commerce committees are active (you are always welcome to become involved), Chamber fundraising continues to be suc-cessful, and we are sustaining our mem-bership in spite of a constrained economic environment. There is much work to do, and with your support and encouragement I believe the Chamber will move forward with renewed energy and optimism. Thank you to the Chamber Board for allowing me the opportunity to be your interim director, and I hope to be of service to each of you as Chamber members.

As stimu-l a t i n g a n d

thought-pro-voking as the Lacey Cham-ber of Com-merce monthly Forums always are, do you ever

find yourself wishing that there was some mechanism for delving deeper into a particular topic—perhaps some meet-ing or venue where there could be more interaction with the presenter? Of course you have! Well, here’s the answer!

Each month, the ROXY Connector Eco-nomic Development Roundtable meets for breakfast and a robust discussion of contemporary, relevant topics. For example, last week (October 20) we were treated to a presentation by Bret

Bertolin of the Washington State Eco-nomic & Revenue Forecast Council. Mr. Bertolin shared with us the state’s meth-odology for doing their job: forecasting for the legislature and governor what the income outlook is for the coming biennium. You’ll be shocked to learn that this was not the rosiest picture ever painted…but there were some nuggets of good news in this discussion. For example, Americans have recovered over $6 trillion in net worth from the depths of the recent recession! You read that right, six trillion with a T! That’s a lot of recovery.

We’ve interacted with other valuable presenters in previous programs. In September, Patrick Connor ,with the local office of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), led a discussion of pending ballot initiatives. We had asked Mr. Connor to focus pri-

marily upon I-1082, the Initiative that will allow competition in the worker’s compensation insurance arena. This meeting also provided an opportunity to share information on the other ballot initiatives and referenda.

Once again, one of the appealing ele-ments of this format is that it invites the participation of all in attendance. That’s why it’s called a “roundtable”…your par-ticipation is encouraged! We’d love to see you at the next meeting of the ROXY Connector on Wednesday November 17. We’ll be at the River’s Edge Restaurant at Tumwater Valley. The program will feature a presentation by Grant Gilmore, Executive Director of the AWB Institute, the economic development arm of the Washington Association of Business. We look forward to seeing you at 8:00 a.m.!
