Last year, Pope Francis added to our liturgical calendar a new observance, the World Day of the Poor. Nearing the end of the liturgical year, the Holy Father reminds us that before celebrating the universal kingship of Jesus Christ, we should remember Christ’s particular kinship with the poor. Disciples of Jesus, those who allow Him to reign over their lives as Lord, should then naturally share His own kinship with the poor who are close to His heart. In this way, we rediscover togetherness. “On this World Day, we are asked to fulfil the words of the Psalm: ‘The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied’ (Ps 22:26). We know that in the Temple of Jerusalem, after the rites of sacrifice, a banquet was held. It was this experience that, in many dioceses last year, enriched the celebration of the first World Day of the Poor. Many people encountered the warmth of a home, the joy of a festive meal and the solidarity of those who wished to sit together at table in simplicity and fraternity. I would like this year’s, and all future World Days, to be celebrated in a spirit of joy at the rediscovery of our capacity for togetherness. Praying together as a community and sharing a meal on Sunday is an experience that brings us back to the earliest Christian community, described by the evangelist Luke in all its primitive simplicity: ‘They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers… And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need’ (Acts 2:42,44-45)” (Pope Francis’ message, Second World Day of the Poor). This kinship with the poor is keenly expressed in our concrete actions as we live as disciples of Jesus. We are called to share life together with those Jesus loves. The fellowship of Christians is not exclusively with the like-minded, the good-mannered, and the well-to-do, but with the poor, the blind, the lame, the hungry and thirsty, every person who is in need of God’s forgiveness, healing, and mercy. Jesus has drawn close to us so that we might know that we are not alone, we are not unwanted, we are not unloved. Let’s all grow in generosity to share our experience of Jesus Christ with those in need of it, so that everyone can rediscover togetherness.

REDISCOVERING TOGETHERNESS

As we prepare ourselves to sit down this week with family and friends to carve the roast beast, the Church prepares herself for the end of the liturgical cycle.

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA VINCENTIANS...

The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us.

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are hearing the words of Jesus and living them out.

THIS WEEKEND’S SPECIAL COLLECTION

Please be generous in this week’s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people lives in poverty. With this collection, you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. Please

give to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development by using your designated envelope from your packet. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

made some changes in our preparation process, to better help our parents to be “the first and best of parents” in raising their children in the Catholic Church. We no longer have the preparation program every month.

The next class is Saturday, December 1st, at 10:30am in the St. Isidore Room. Register for this or future class sessions online: www.stsusanna.org/baptism.

THIS ADVENT, GET TO KNOW MARY AS YOU NEVER HAVE BEFORE!

Advent is a special time of year to gain spiritual fruits, particularly peace and joy. A special mediator of these graces is our Blessed Mother Mary. In her humanity, she responded with virtue in a special way when the Lord Jesus entered into her life. Her response teaches us lessons that we can best learn from her in the history of salvation. Join us for a special 4-week Advent study as we prepare for Jesus’ birth as Mary did. This study will guide us through Mary’s experiences and encounters and shed light on how they relate to our preparation for Christmas.

Please join us as we joyfully anticipate the coming of the person of Jesus through an encounter with his Most Blessed Mother. We will meet on Wednesdays at 9:30am in the St. Isidore Room, November 28th through December 19th. Don’t miss this opportunity to draw more intentionally into the season of Advent and to obtain the grace associated with Advent devotion.

For more information, please contact Susan Hack at 398-3821, ext. 3169 or [email protected]. To register, please visit www.stsusanna.org/advent.

2018 Colletion Weekend:

GIVING TREE OUTREACH KICKS-OFF THIS WEEKEND, NOVEMBER 17TH/18TH

The trees for the annual parish Giving Tree ministry are now displayed in the gathering space and by the elevator. This year, three organizations will benefit from the donations: the Schuh Center (red ornaments), St. George Food Pantry in Clifton (green ornaments) and St. Vincent DePaul St. Joseph Conference in Adams County (yellow ornaments). Gifts for the families of SVDP St. Joseph Conference can be found on The Hive, St. Susanna’s new parish software:

www.stsusanna.org/givingtree. Please stop by the trees next weekend or visit the website to take an ornament…or 2 or 3. Purchase the item listed on the ornament. Pay close attention to the ornament regarding wether the gift needs to be wrapped or not. Attach the ornament and return the package to the church by the weekend of December 8th/9th.

Volunteers are still needed on the weekend of December 8th/9th to collect the gifts. Volunteers are also needed on December 10th to deliver the gifts to St. George Food Pantry and SVdP St. Joseph Conference in Adams Co. To volunteer for these opportunities, go to the parish web page: www.stsusanna.org/givingtree. If you have questions, please contact Mary Jo Burns at [email protected] or 398-3821, ext. 3120.

IT IS NOT TO LATE TO SUPPORT THE TURKEY DINNER MINISTRY!

If you forgot to bring your donation items, or would still like to make a financial contribution to be used for purchasing items, for the Thanksgiving Meals, please feel free to deliver them to the Parish Office on Monday or Tuesday, November 19th/20th. If any contributions are received in excess of what is spent on these meals, those funds will be used to meet the needs of the poor and vulnerable in our area and the surrounding area.

If you would like to participate in the actual preparation of the meals or to acquire more information, please contact Karen and Ricky Mathews, [email protected] or 755-7645.

THE BOX OF JOY OUTREACH WAS A SUCCESS!

Once again, the parish, school, preschool and CFP students helped to make our Box of Joy Outreach a success! We were able to donate 938 Box of Joy boxes to be delivered to children living in some of the most impoverished areas of the world – Haiti, Guatemala, The Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and El Salvador. What a beautiful way to share the love of Christ with our fellow brothers and sisters! Thanks so much to all of those who volunteered to help with this ministry and to all those who donated boxes filled with school supplies, toiletry items and fun toys. Such a simple gesture can have life changing results.

At Christmas, we experience the joy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Gift giving is a wonderful, meaningful part of that experience. Unfortunately, severe poverty

deprives many children in developing countries of this joy. Their parents are too poor to provide even one simple Christmas present.

Through Cross Catholic Outreach’s Box of Joy program, you can ensure these children are not deprived of Christmas blessings this year. By packing a

Christmas gift box and sponsoring the cost of its shipment, you can deliver a Box of Joy to a child overseas who would otherwise receive nothing.

For childrenwho wish forJUST ONE GIFT.

HOW TO PACK aBOX OF JOY

Do Everything Well

This huge fresco behind the Sistine Chapel altar may be the greatest

representation of the coming of Christ at the end of time. The centerpiece of the composition is Christ the judge with the Virgin at his side represented in a halo, surrounded by a crowd of apostles, prophets, patriarchs, Old Testament heroines, martyrs, and saints who form a double crown of swirling bodies. Michelangelo painted hundreds of figures, all with exquisite attention to detail.

Just think, when Michelangelo was painting, his work in the chapel was destined to be seen by very few—the pope, his court, a few visiting kings and diplomats at most. The Sistine Chapel would receive less foot traffic in Michelangelo’s time than a medium- to small-sized parish today. Yet, Michelangelo painted with the same eye to perfection as if he knew his work would be seen by millions. He was not painting for the multitudes but for God and his patron, the pope.

Similarly, if we act with generosity and love, whether observed by millions or no one, we will follow the path to true freedom and love. We do what is right, not to be seen, but because we want to be true to God, ourselves, and others. Living like this, we will have no reason to fear the Last Judgment.

Judgment in person, and countless more via broadcasts and social media. So do everything well, since it is seen by God and yourself—and maybe some day, by more eyes than you ever imagined!

For ReflectionDo I worry too much about being seen by others?

Do I console myself knowing that no good deed goes unrewarded?
