Letter from the PastorLetter from the PastorLetter from the PastorLetter from the Pastor Dear Parish Family, On March 15, 2019, Bishop Perez sent a letter to the clergy of the Diocese of Cleveland concerning the
celebration of Mass. Specifically, he pointed out that during his travels throughout our local Church, he
observed “the variety of postures taken by the faithful during the celebration of Mass, especially during
the Communion Rite.” He found that a “diversity” of postures existed. The Bishop highlighted the fact that “liturgical services are not private functions but are celebrations of
the Church…, the holy people united and organized under the authority of the bishops. Therefore,
liturgical services pertain to the whole Body of the Church.” He went on to state that, “the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, third typical edition,” (or the
GIRM) “has laid down normative postures for the celebration of Mass.” The GIRM states that “A
common bodily posture, to be observed by all those taking part, is a sign of the unity of the members of
the Christian community gathered together for the Sacred Liturgy, for it expresses the intentions and
spiritual attitude of the participants and also fosters them.” The Bishop also notes that “a lack of
uniformity can serve as a sign of disunity and promote a sense of individualism.” Therefore, the Bishop has “elected to retain” the “current Communion Rite posture policy, first
promulgated in 2003. This “reinforces the universal Church’s policy of standing for the singing of the
Communion Hymn, during the distribution and reception of Holy Communion. Once the last person has
received Holy Communion, the Communion Hymn should end, and the faithful may kneel or sit for
private prayer. The faithful should not be required to stand for the reposition of the Blessed Sacrament
or the purification of vessels.” To sum up this instruction, the faithful will: Stand…after the Great Amen, and remain standing after the Lamb of God and through the celebrant’s
reception of Holy Communion. The faithful remain standing during the distribution and reception of Holy
Communion for the singing of the Communion Hymn. Sit or Kneel…during the period of sacred silence…after the distribution of Holy Communion. This period of
sacred silence should begin as soon as the distribution of Holy Communion has been completed. At this point
the faithful may sit or kneel. The faithful should not be required to stand during the purification of vessels,
or until the reposition of the Blessed Sacrament. May our love for our Eucharistic Lord grow ever stronger as we celebrate Holy Mass, which is the
greatest prayer of the Church and the source and summit of its ecclesial life. God bless you,
