Cowboys Against CancerHonors Paul Bochmann

Honest, dedicated, non-judgmental and altruistic are words used to describe Paul Bochmann. In fact, the name Paul means “humble” in Latin, another word characteristic of Paul.

Paul began his life in Colorado where he resided with his family and attended school. He graduated from Arvada High School in 1952 and attended Colorado State University for one year. Paul married Floy Powell, the love of his life, on December 25, 1955. They moved to Wyoming after Mountain Fuel Supply Company employed Paul. He retired from the company as a Regional Manager in 1992, after 39 years of employment.

Although Paul began woodworking in his younger years, he spent much of his time in retirement in his wood shop

where he hand crafted high quality pieces of furniture from oak, blue pine and redwood. Since 2004, Paul has donated many of his pieces to the silent and live auctions for Cowboys Against Cancer. Paul designed and hand crafted one-of-a-kind benches that added comfort to any home and providing storage of heirloom quilts to winter hats and gloves. Although Paul crafted many benches for the auctions, his work was not limited to them. He also crafted a quilt rack, vegetable bin,

end table, bookcase, corner shelf and an old time icebox for Cowboys Against Cancer.

Paul also enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was on the river fishing or at the house gardening. Any outdoor activity was especially memorable when family was involved. If Paul was not outside he could be found inside playing pool, crossword puzzles and bowling.

Family was very important to Paul and he enjoyed spending time with them. In honor of Paul, eighteen members of his family from Rock Springs, Cheyenne, Vernal, and from elsewhere in Utah, Oklahoma, and Colorado are in attendance to not only remember Paul, but to continue his legacy of altruism.

Cowboys Against Cancer Memory Wall

The Cowboys Against Cancer Memory Wall is a tribute to the warriors whose battle against cancer was so valiantly fought. These were the people who taught us what it means to be courageous. They gave us laughter, compassion, and tears at their most challenging times. As we view their photos and read about their lives, we are reminded that Cancer does not discriminate and can attack at any stage of our lives. We thank them for their spirit and hope, we remember them with heartfelt loss and we celebrate them.

If you wish to have your loved one on the C o w b o y s A g a i n s t Cancer Memory Wall, p l e a s e p r o v i d e a photograph and your written thoughts to C o w b o y s A g a i n s t Cancer.

Cowboys Against Cancer Sponsors will receive colorful plaques to recognize their contribution. The plaques will be delivered after this year’s event.

The plaques, which hang on the walls of many local businesses, recognize those businesses and individuals for their support and remind Sweetwater County residents of the availability of grant funding from Cowboys Against Cancer throughout the year.

This is the first quilt made for Cowboys Against Cancer in 1994. It started the tradition of giving back to the community that continues with the Benefit and Banquet tonight.

Congratulations to the 2017 Grant Underwriters who supported Cowboys Against Cancer during last year’s benefit and banquet and helped raise dollars in direct support of patient grants.

This tradition began in 2009 as Al Harris returned to host Cowboys Against Cancer just after undergoing his own cancer treatment. Al suggested that we add a segment to our program giv ing those in at tendance the opportunity to directly sponsor a grant or a portion of a grant. The tradition started that evening continues, thanks to the generosity of our guests.

Our grant recipients appreciate your generosity and best wishes.

It is with great sadness Cowboys Against Cancer said goodbye to one of the original kitchen t e a m m e m b e r s , Dennis Waters, Jr. when he died unexpectedly earlier this year. Dennis selflessly gave his time for fifteen (15) years and also obtained many donations for Cowboys Against Cancer. Dennis was a talented amateur chef and built a career in the food industry after graduating high school and serving in the Utah National Guard. He learned to make his legendary Limoncello while vacationing in Italy. He was a generous and humorous man who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to supporting Cowboys Against Cancer, Dennis also supported the charity Chef & Child and was a distinguished member of the ACF Beehive State Chefs Association. On behalf of Cowboys Against Cancer, we send our sincere condolences to Dennis’ family and friends. In honor of Dennis, our chefs and cooks tonight wear this pin to celebrate his life and support for Cowboys Against Cancer.

Cowboys Against Cancer President’s Message

Twenty-four years ago, I began this incredible journey known as Cowboys Against Cancer. What began as an idea to give back to others who had been diagnosed with cancer has evolved into an incredible foundation providing more than Six Million Dollars to residents of Sweetwater County. I attribute the success of this organization to the volunteers and the community.

As I travel, I have been presented with many opportunities to share the Cowboys Against Cancer story. As I tell strangers about this wonderful, 100% volunteer organization, they are in awe. People are not in awe because of the organization, they are in awe of the support from our volunteers and the community. For some, the idea that a community our size has given so generously for so many years is unbelievable. For me, it is a testament as to the generous people that live in our rugged corner of Wyoming.

Our volunteers spend countless hours, resources, and energy throughout the year to prepare for this evening. There are over one-hundred volunteers, including the students who serve food or the award-winning chefs who travel from Texas, Nevada, Montana and Utah. Some of our chefs are celebrating eighteen years of service to Cowboys Against Cancer. Each year, the number of volunteers increases.

The community offers its support regardless of the time of year or season. I have heard from grant recipients that they would not have received the support, both financially and emotionally, that Cowboys Against Cancer has given them had they lived in any other community. They have been very thankful to be a Sweetwater County resident at such a difficult time. I feel so proud to be part of such a wonderful community. Thank you, Sweetwater County for touching so many lives.
