Bridge Members Present: Charlie Mauck, Tom Whittemore, Chad Knaepple, Bill Deming, Marilyn Ostrominski, Scott Pursell, Patty Deming, Esther Pursell, Doris Deming, Lou Kaunzinger Location: Tradewinds Restaurant in Niceville Prior to the meeting, all BBSC members present enjoyed the social hour helped by the good selection of beers and wines, followed by dinner which was, as in prior years, served as a series of appetizers followed by several well-prepared entrees, and dessert. By the start of the meeting there were no more customers being admitted or served, so last year’s problem of excessive noise during the meeting did not occur this time. All 2009 bridge members were present, with the exception of Mark Hunter who was with the High School sailing team competing in the Great Oaks Regatta held by the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. Call to order at 9:46pm: The meeting was officially called to order at 9:46 PM by Commodore Charlie Mauck, who began by sounding last call for the 50-50 cash drawing ($100; winner: Esther Pursell). Charlie then thanked the staff of the Tradewinds, the 2009 bridge members, and Brett Hinely as our Marina host. Secretary report (handled by Charlie Mauck): As the minutes of the Spring Meeting (3/14/09) had been printed verbatim in the April Newsletter, a motion was made, seconded, and approved to accept the minutes on that basis. Treasurer Marilyn Ostrominski reported a checking account balance of (roughly) $2900, plus the $4000 CD which matures in January. 21 families have renewed their membership for 2010. Vice Commodore Tom Whittemore announced that it had been a good year, and that he will be leaving the bridge, to be replaced by Chad Knaepple who in turn announced that we now need a new Rear Commodore. Fleet Captain Bill Deming then thanked everyone for their support during the year, and announced that he too is looking for a replacement. Commodore Charlie Mauck, after announcing that we retained both the Bay Challenge cups this year, opened the floor for the election of new bridge members. After the nominations and voting, the new 2010 bridge will be: Commodore: Mickey Duvall; Vice Commodore: Chad Knaepple; Rear Commodore: Charlie Mauck; Fleet Captain: Neville Edenborough; Small Boat Captain: Zack Kastl (tentative from a previous arrangement with Mark Hunter, as neither were present at the banquet). Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter, and Purchasing will remain the same – Scott Pursell, Marilyn Ostrominski, Patty Deming, and Lou Kaunzinger, respectively. Esther Pursell and Doris Deming will continue as Historians. Charlie next presented the Wet Wednesday participation award to Chad Knaepple, who in turn expressed his thanks to Randy Hinely for having helped out the Wednesday night race committees by making his Hatteras yacht available. Fleet Captain Bill Deming next presented the following awards: Jane Colee Small Boat awards: 3 rd place to Zack Kastl, 2 nd place to Craig Dyerle, and 1 st place to Mark Hunter. As I huddle in my blanket wondering whatever happened to the warm Florida weather I am comforted in thinking that Spring will come! With spring comes another big

racing season. This year we are trying to enhance last year’s successful season with a few changes that hopefully will attract more cruisers to join us.

One change is that we have eliminated the Series Race and replaced the series with four individual races, the Spring, April, Summer, and Fall Regattas. These races will be low cost ($10 entry fee) with three classes (assuming enough boats). The classes will be Spinnakers, Non-Spinnakers and Cruisers. The Cruiser class will have a separate start and reduced race length. We will continue with the “big” races; Sailfest, Round-the-Bay, Double Handed, Single Handed, Night, Challenge Cup, and Grande Finale Regattas.Another change is that we have added back the Bluenose Fun Race on January 30, 2010. That has been lots of fun in previous years, so long as you wear your long-johns. Hopefully the weather will warm from the 30’s and 40’s we are having now to a respectable 50º. Bill Deming will be the Race Chairman. As usual the Captain’s meeting will be at Schooners at 11:00 with the race beginning at noon. In February we will have the Chili Dog Cook of and Fun Regatta.Mark your calendar for all the races. Hope to see you there!

Neville Edenbourough, PHRF Fleet Captain

I am excited about again serving as the BBSC Rear Commodore and am looking forward to an active cruising and social season. Keep your eyes on this year’s calendar. One new feature for this year will be an attempt to resurrect the Friday Night Raft-Up. These will be informal events – probably held in either Rocky Bayou or Boggy Bayou. Watch this column for further news. If any club member has suggestions regarding our cruising events, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fair Winds, Charlie Mauck, Rear Commodore

The Series Races award for non-spinnaker 1st place went to Dave Lauderbaugh; spinnaker 2nd place went to Mickey Duvall, and spinnaker 1st place to Pat Ballasch

The Commodore’s Cup award, which is based upon best performance in Sailfest, Round-the-Bay, and Grand Finale, went to Dave Lauderbaugh for non-spinnaker, and to Chad Knaepple for spinnaker.

Mark Hunter was named winner of the Emma Goggin Award, and the Sportsmanship Award was presented to Charlie Mauck.

The Blooper Award was retained for the second year in a row by Pat Ballasch, this time for snagging the start line mark during the Start Palooza. The other two possible candidates were (1) a mishap disembarking from a dinghy, and (2) a bizarre type of foul-up in deploying a spinnaker.

The Walt Ruckel Sailor of the Year Award was presented to Dave Lauderbaugh with the presentation being made by Walt Ruckel himself, who was present at the banquet.

Commodore Charlie Mauck then named Patty Deming as Most Valuable Bridge Member of the year.

Charlie turned the floor over to the new Commodore Mickey Duvall who mentioned that he would like to do some things differently

next year. Charlie next thanked Lou Kaunzinger for her handling of the purchasing and procurement. Lou then took the moment to display some samples of the items she had for sale: Hat, license plate, polo shirt. Mickey Duvall then expressed his thanks to the 2009 bridge members, and Charlie adjourned the meeting at 10:31 PM.

Meeting Adjourned at 10:31 PM.

small boat fleet report

Happy New Year and welcome to the 2010 sailing season. With all the cold frigid weather it is hard to think about sailing but its time to start planning your upcoming sailing activities and preparing your boat for a lot of fun. We have a great bridge this year and they’ve been working hard to put together a schedule with a lot of variety that should satisfy everyone’s desires. Variety is the key word and any suggestions to make the racing or cruising better is always welcome. We are always looking for volunteers and the success of the club depends on it. There are lots of things to do and if you are uncomfortable with running a race or organizing a cruise there are lots of veterans that would be willing to assist. These jobs are never as hard as they first appear and it really helps your own ability to understand your boat when you’ve done these. Our membership is down from previous years and we are hoping to attract more families to the club. Please spread the word and help us make the club something they want to join. Our annual

membership cost is $50 for renewal and $60 for new members and based on the schedule of events it really is a good deal. Participation in our activities will breed more participation and make it better for all. We’re planning on sailing events in all the months this year and a fun race in January, the Bluenose Race, will kick it off. We also have the annual Chili Dog Cook-off and Fun Regatta in February. Some twists are added to the race and the chili competition and feast after the race is great fun with a lot of competition for the top chili award. Plan for the Spring Membership Meeting on 13 March at the Bluewater Bay Marina at 6:00 PM and all the 2010 activities will be presented by your bridge. We’ve had a lot of enthusiasm the last couple of years on our Wednesday night fun racing and we hope to carry over some of these lessons to the rest of the schedule. Help us to make the 2010 sailing season a lot of fun. Be safe and see you on the water.

Mickey Duvall, Commodore

As I sit here while the temperature outside falls below freezing, it’s a bit difficult to think about getting onto the Laser and sailing around the buoys for a few hours, but I have to. We have a pretty standard schedule set up this year; 7 races, 2 drops and average score with no drops for race committee duty. (sign up will be there at the spring meeting) The schedule is flexible at this point, so if there is a conflict, let me know.

Like most of the racing scene at BBSC, we have seen a bit of a drop-off in participation recently. Please spread the word that we want people out there on the race course. I think we are a pretty friendly lot and want to encourage newcomers to come on out. If you know anybody that is thinking about coming out, please encourage them to come on down and check it out; juniors too.

Tip of the month: Take the time this off season to make sure the lights on the trailer are working properly and make sure that the registration is current. (I have gotten a warning for this while it was parked at the marina)

Zack Kastl, Small Boat Fleet Captain

Pat and Bob Hutchinson sent the holidays in Staniel Cay, Exuma’s and entered the New Year cruising regatta. They took second to a 75 foot mega yacht named Sea Hawk, holding up the BBSC reputation along the way.
