The building's re-use was a critical component of the project and helped further the campus wide sus- tainability initiatives of Nova Southeastern University and the Governmental Services Administration (GSA) which is charged with overseeing the construction of governmen- tal agency facilities such as this. The USGS portion of the building con- sists of approximately 24,000 square feet of administration and Laboratory functions. The administration portion of the space houses approximately 80 people in pri- vate offices and cubicle workstations. The Laboratories are composed of a Geology Lab, where samples of rock and soils are tested, and a Hydrology Lab where water samples are analyzed. The challenge of this project was to incorporate the highly technical uses within an existing building and utilize to the maximum extent possible the existing systems. Through numerous meetings with the USGS development team the Architect was able to formulate a space plan where many of the interior walls and HVAC systems could be readily reused. Additional exterior windows were added to the perimeter of the building to introduce more natural light and allow for views to the exterior. The project was completed in just under 2 months in order to meet a tight timeline dictated by the GSA for the construction of this facility.
