The third season under head coachDonald Pickett looks to be the onewhere the Northwestern State LadyDemon softball team will turn the cornerfor greener pastures.

After a 2010 campaign saw the teambreak even with a 27-27 record - 22more wins than the previous season, that turnaround was the best in NCAADivision I softball last year. That's thekind of momentum the Lady Demonsare hoping will carry over into the 2011slate.

Five position starters including allthree starting pitchers return for the stillyoung Lady Demon squad. The rosterconsists of just three seniors, three jun-iors, four sophomores, and eight fresh-men.

Headlining the returners is junior firstbaseman Samantha Roberts who hasbeen selected as a preseason All- Southland Conference honoree.

Roberts, who earned third team All-SLC honors in 2010 as a sophomore, garnered the Triple Crown batting titleslast year - leading the team in hitting(.333), home runs (5), and RBIs (35).

Senior catcher Kayla Cole (.314-3-26) will be another piece of the offen-sive puzzle that'll help guide the LadyDemons down the path to success.

But that success will be administeredby the strong corps of returning pitchers- juniors Kylie Roos (13-10, 3.26 ERA),Kelee Grimes (5-8, 3.36), and BrookeBoening (9-9, 3.55).

“We're going to be strong on themound,” said third-year head coachDonald Pickett. “And you have to bethat in softball. We have all of oursback from last year, all three of whichthrew close to 100 innings last year, so

there's a lot of experience there.”Roos tossed 129 innings and struck

out 117 while Boening threw 110.1innings with 132 Ks and Grimes 81.1innings with 92 batters fanned.

“Those three players should be thestrong point of our team,” said Pickett.“We've also got a lot of position playersreturning that we're looking build on.We've also got 4-5 freshmen that aregoing to be in and out of the startinglineup and hopefully they'll come alonglike I think they will.”

After a 5-45 season in his first sea-son at the helm, Pickett guided theLady Demons to the best turnaround inthe country last year after finishing 27-27. The team started out 8-2 and fin-ished the year by taking two out of threegames against Texas-San Antonio.

“I think that momentum of how we didlast year will carry over into this sea-

son,” said Pickett. “The girls are a yearolder and they have a lot more confi-dence now. They know what it takes tobeat teams in our conference.Everybody wants to keep it going andnot have any letdowns.

“We have a lot tougher test with ourearly schedule than what we did lastyear, but we're definitely capable ofdoing some really good things.”

The non-conference schedule isloaded down with teams that will helpprepare the Lady Demons for their 30-game league slate.

“We open up at the ULM tournamentand will play some really good teamsthere (Louisiana-Monroe, SoutheastMissouri State, Eastern Illinois, IndianaState). Then we'll go and play in a tour-nament at North Texas where they'reone of the favorites to win the Sun BeltConference. We'll also face aNebraska team that's ranked in the top

25.“After that, we'll play in a tournament

at Chattanooga where we'll face somevery good competition.

“I also like our home schedule, espe-cially with Big 12 member Baylor com-ing in here (Feb. 21). The plan is totake those early season, non-confer-ence games and use those to helptranslate into wins when the conferenceseason rolls around.”

Pickett will be looking to Roberts andCole to pave the way for a great seasonon the offensive front.

“Sam led us in hitting last year andwas our only all-conference selection,”said Pickett. “She improved a lot fromher freshman to her sophomore yearand we think she can improve thatmuch this year. She had a great fallseason, battled some injuries however, but we think she's back on track nowand definitely going to be the anchor ofthe lineup.”

“Kayla Cole is the only other .300 hit-ter we had on the team last year. Beinga senior, she's going to be a big leaderfor us on the field.”

“We've also got (newcomer) TaraMcKenney who is going to be a greatleadoff hitter and shortstop for us as afreshman. She had a great fall andwe're really looking for a lot of specialthings out of her.”

The Lady Demons, will play a 22-game home slate beginning with amatchup against Jackson State on Feb.16. NSU will then host Baylor on Feb.21 and will follow that with a double-header against Prairie View on Feb. 23.

NSU will open Southland Conferenceplay at home on March 1 againstMcNeese State in a three-game series.

The Lady Demons will also host confer-ence foes Stephen F. Austin (March 19-20), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (April 2-3), Southeastern Louisiana (April 16-17), and defending league championTexas State (May 7-8).

Don't mistake Donald Pickett's country twang for a laid-back personality.

The Lady Demon softball coach is certainly easy to get toknow, and he's never going to be described as fast-talkingunless an umpire is involved.

But he is driven. He has big ambitions. He has a plan inmotion to quickly restore Northwestern State softball toprominence and championship-level success.

He knows what it takes. He hired assistant coaches whohave been there, too.

Their approach took root last season and especially inrecruiting, where their efforts resulted in the best turnaroundin Divisoin I softball last season.

The plan is in action. Facility improvements are tangible. Asolid approach to coaching, teaching and managing the pro-gram is clear to see. To see where Pickett plans to take NSU,you need only see where he's already been as an assistantcoach.

Pickett helped Tennessee-Chattanooga to three NCAATournament appearances and the brink of a Women'sCollege World Series berth while on the Mocs' staff.

The 33-year-old Pickett begins his 14th season of colle-giate coaching experience. He spent two years helpingestablish a brand-new program at Memphis after working ina pair of highly successful programs at UT-Chattanooga andChattanooga State Community College. At ChattanoogaState, Pickett was part of a staff that coached the team tothree top-five finishes in the junior college softball worldseries along with three regional and conference champi-onships.

He also has coached the Austin (Tenn.) Eagles AmericanSoftball Association summer team to four national tourna-

ment appearances and two top-five finishes in the ASAnationals.

Pickett learned about the Northwestern coaching post fromPat Murphy, the coach of College World Series participantAlabama, who was among several nationally-prominentcoaches during the summer 2008 search for a new LadyDemons head coach.

“Starting with his high level of character and integrity,Donald Pickett has an amazing reputation in the collegiatesoftball world. He will serve as a good role model for ourstudent-athletes while also providing them with the motiva-tion and coaching needed to return Northwestern State tothe point of challenging for Southland Conference titles andNCAA postseason berths,” said NSU director of athleticsGreg Burke, announcing Pickett's hiring.

Working for five seasons under coach Frank Reed at UTC,Pickett helped the Mocs advance within one win of the WorldSeries. The Mocs had an overall 210-126 record while pick-ing up three Southern Conference championships beforePickett joined coach Wendy Thees at Memphis following thefirst year of softball for the Tigers.

Also serving as assistant to Reed at Chattanooga State

CC for three seasons, Pickett helped post a 151-27 record, including a 62-3 mark in 2001. A year earlier, Pickett was partof the National Fastpitch Coaching Staff of the Year, and in2002, Pickett was among the Chattanooga State team thatwas inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.

A 2005 UTC graduate, Pickett is regarded as an excellentrecruiter whose expertise coaching hitting and defense isrecognized nationally.

Coaching and administrative colleagues of Pickett's wereeffusive in their praise.

“Donald is ready to be a head coach,” said Thees. “Hissoftball knowledge is incredible and he does a great job ofgetting to know his players and recruits.”

Said Lynn Parkes, the senior woman administrator atMemphis: “Donald Pickett is a man of character and integri-ty. He loves the game of softball and loves working withyoung people. I think he will do a fantastic job.”

In Pickett's first season as assistant coach at his almamater, the 2001 Lady Mocs opened the season with back-to-back no-hitters and knocked off top-25 teams in OhioState and Baylor, rolling to a 44-15 record while never drop-ping more than two games in a row. The Lady Mocs postedtwo upset wins over top-seeded and No. 12 ranked FloridaAtlantic in the NCAA Regionals. UTC then just missed cap-turing a berth in the World Series after narrow losses toGeorgia Tech and Florida State.

“There may not be a better fundamental coach out there,”said UTC's Reed. “He is a good person, the type of personyour family would like to be associated with, and he is per-haps one of the most 'up and coming' young coaches outthere right now.”

A strong reference came from an in-state rival of UTC's,head coach Torey Acheson at Tennessee Tech.

“At Tennessee-Chattanooga, those players all became bet-ter under him......technically, his knowledge base is reallygood....he is an upstanding human being; he was raisedright.”

Said Laura Mincy, assistant athletic director and SWA atUTC: “Donald is very determined and passionate about col-lege softball. He's a gem.”

That's what he says - the gem part, anyway -- about hiswife, Paige, and their 2-year-old baby girl, Ainsley Elizabeth, born Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 in Natchitoches.

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President

Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he becameNorthwestern State University’s 17th president inJuly of 1996 that his primary objective would be tohelp make his Alma Mater the best institution it couldbe. It is apparent after more than 14 years thatWebb is achieving that admirable goal.

Under his leadership, Northwestern becamethe first public college or university in Louisiana to achieve 100 percent nationalaccreditation of all eligible academic programs.

Enrollment has reached record levels during Webb’s tenure as president andexceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004. Webb has alsobeen at the forefront in recent years of moving the university toward higheradmission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in theenrollment of students with greater academic potential and aptitude.

Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of studentshas gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern inrecord numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of highschool valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the univer-sity.

External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s lead-ership. In the first capital campaign in its history, the university received $32.7million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. Thatfunding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professor-ships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the privatefunding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from stateand federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its foundingin 1884.

Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spearheading the devel-opment at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning networkof any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to stu-dents across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video.

Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new andrenovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Wellness, Recreation and Activity Centeropened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and ConsumerSciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated andrestored. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added twomodified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also beenobtained to rebuild the East and West Caspari Halls, and replace the under-ground electrical distribution system.

Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams continue to receive pos-itive national recognition. The Computer Information Systems program, forexample, won five consecutive national championships in academic competitionin systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in theNCAA national championship tournament.

A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid support-er of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at thenational level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board ofdirectors of the Southland Conference and has been a member of the prestigiousNCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that over-see all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAAPresidential Advisory Group.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education,Webb earned a master of science degree in mathematics from NSU in 1966. Hereceived a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research.

Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, VA, from1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and TeacherCertification in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976.He moved to Southeastern Louisiana University in 1976 and in 13 years thereheld positions as director of institutional research, EEO officer, registrar andmember of the mathematics fac-ulty.

He became Dean ofInstruction and GraduateStudies and professor of mathe-matics at Northwestern in 1989.In that position, he was respon-sible for campus-wide policydevelopment, planning, advancement, and review ofboth graduate and undergradu-ate programs. While Webb wasin that position, graduate enroll-ment increased by 35 percent, and internal funding for facultyresearch increased by 200 percent.

As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful FreshmanConnection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant pro-posal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve studentretention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for theSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools.

He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors ofthe Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association forthe Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the FirstBaptist Church.

Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates ofNorthwestern. Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athlet-ic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding hisposition with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball outof the park from time to time but always taking an understated pro-file, seeing himself as a role player.

Beginning his 46th year on the university's staff, Pierce's impacton NSU and the city of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall ofFame statistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significantaspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic direc-tor Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics compet-ing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year.

Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member ofUSTA teams that have won more than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and one national championship.

Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce hadalready served his alma mater, adopted hometown and state withdistinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees university oper-ations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media rela-tions and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in governmentalaffairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as heworked under four previous presidents as Northwestern advancedfrom NAIA to NCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athletic sta-tus in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for theDemon football team during his college years, working closely withlegendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning his journalism degree,Pierce went to work for the New Orleans Times Picayune, serving asa reporter and editor. He was named executive sports editor at theage of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches andreturned to NSU as sports information director. He was promoted tonews bureau director two years later and assumed additional respon-sibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other areas through the years.

He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility inPrather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an enti-ty created in 1958. He established annual induction activities thatremain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director of

the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him to step aside from the vol-unteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star,1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of theSouthland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director JoeDean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend EddieRobinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions tofilm the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, SallyField and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie's impact ontourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana's higher edu-cation system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spo-ken at hundreds of events since 1965.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the JournalismDepartment faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thou-sands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and magazines.

In the midst of his 15th year as director of athletics atNorthwestern State, Greg Burke has received nationalacclaim for the job he's done in his adopted hometown.

Athletics director at Northwestern since speaking atthe annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon onAugust 29, 1996, Burke is the longest-serving AD at anyLouisiana institution.

He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in near-ly all of the school's NCAA Division I sports.

In June, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors ofAthletics (NACDA).

He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith's SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU's Burkewere Purdue's Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford's Bob Roller and Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the SportsBusiness Daily. Burke is the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association.

Burke's 14 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 51 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, andthree U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition.

Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate andGraduation Success Rate reports. The school's athletic facilities have undergone nearly $6 million in improvements in the past four years.

NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league's five decades of history to sweep football, men's basketball and baseball cham-pionships in the same athletic year. It's been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last timeby Michigan State in 1979-80.

Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke's management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal.Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fenc-

ing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subse-

quent positions. Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball's Mike McConathy and soccer's Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons

and have been back to postseason since. NSU's 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63.

Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women's ath-

letics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament. Volleyball set attendance records and made its best-ever showingsin conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation's most improved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett. The Lady Demonsjoined Stanford as the only women's tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and mak-ing a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance.

While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU ath-letic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service.

The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA's APR and GSR studies.Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hoursin 2009-10.

Recently, Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSUAthletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “AcademicAchievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!”

In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation's Gen. Robert R.Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of twoNatchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff.

He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School inAlliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became oneof only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982.

In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of CollegiateAthletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic BusinessManagers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from an AthleticDirector's Perspective" speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Directors.

Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports ManagementCabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors on keyissues facing Division I athletics.

He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002)and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that administers the nation-al playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for FootballChampionship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country'spremiere advocates of FCS football. He currently is third vice-president of the FCS Athletic Director'sAssociation.

In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, "fully certified," from the National CollegiateAthletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformitywith operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.

Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remains active in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a formerpresident of the Natchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American Heart Association and was2010 March of Dimes chairman locally.

He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and elementary teacher, have a 16-year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a junior at St. Mary's High School, a cheerleader, the point guardon the Lady Tigers basketball team, and a member of the tennis team.

Faculty Athletic Representative Jody Biscoe is Associate Professor ofPsychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, where he is thecoordinator for the undergraduate Addiction Studies, and SubstanceAbuse/Prevention concentrations. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty

Athletic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. Since 2006, Northwestern State University has made numerous paradigm shifts in how

it addresses the needs of student-athletes; however, one thing has been consistent in thatits student-athletes are winners on the field and in the classroom. All have heard abouthigher educational institutions being penalized by the NCAA for academic improprieties.NSU has attempted to be a model program of “Doing Things the Right Way,” by followingthe Athletic Department motto: Great Tradition – Brighter Futures. This past year, NSU wasone of only four schools in the State of Louisiana that did not receive any penalties for lowNCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, women’sindoor & outdoor track, and volleyball rating in the top three in the Southland Conference.Among the 40 Northwestern State student-athletes and athletic staff members who gradu-ated in spring 2010, 10 of the 20 receiving undergraduate degrees graduated either cumlaude or magna cum laude. Graduation rates of student-athletes in soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, baseball and football ranked in the top four of the Conference. Theseaccomplishments could not have been achieved without the support and efforts of the stu-dent-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administration.

Also, Jody is the Director for the Louisiana Addiction Technology Transfer Center atNSU.
