    THE LOREM IPSUMS FALL 2012

    Counselors Corner

Are your kids Frustrated? Depressed? Easily Angered? Overwhelmed? Dealingwith deployments? I know that regardless of age, kids can hide their emotions

especially from parents and family members. Sometimes, they need a positiveoutlet, a way of sharing without feeling judged or criticized. I am implementing anew counseling group at Hawaii Technology Academy called the LUNCHBUNCH. Students can bring their lunch, relax, and discuss issues within a safegroup of their peers. We will meet every Friday at 12:00-12:30 for K-5and 12:30-1:00 for 6-8. Our first meeting is scheduled forNovember 19 in Room 4. Please email me or call me toreserve a spot if you are interested in your kids attending

this group. Remember, space is limited so please notify mefirst before having your kids attend.

    Learnin Coach Corner

Tip of the Week!LOL! So we all know that the text-talk is the sign of our times. So why not use this

lingo within your learning coach approach. LOL or laugh out loud, should guide yourplanning each week. Yes, first do just as it says, LAUGH OUT LOUD! Laughing is

    great for wellness.

Now we also can use LOL to focus on our weekly planning:L-Life: Make sure your family calendar is near when planning the work for your

student(s) week. This will help you maintain a realistic schedule.O OLS: The OLS provides a great tool for your scheduling. After knowing what your

LIFE schedule is like, build the weekly school schedule based on what is expected.

Remember to view your progress (k-8). OLS stays with your pace so if you need tocatch up, you need to build this in your schedule yourself.L-Learning Center: Last but not least are the learning center commitments. Be sure

your schedule incorporates the learning center attendance and work expectations.

    HAPPY PLANNING!

THE LOREM IPSUMS FALL 2012Project Step-up

Project Step Up is a student pledge program that encourages

8th and 9th graders to earn the Board of Education (BOE)

Recognition Diploma, also known as the BOE "Step Up"

    Diploma.

Step Up is a community-wide campaign of Hawaii P-20

    Partnerships for Education . It

promotes career and college readiness for Hawaiis high school

students. Hawaiis public 8th and 9th graders are encouraged

to earn the Hawaii State Board of Educations Step Up Diploma

    .

Students sign a Step Up pledge form, along with their parents, to signify their commitment to earn the BOE

Step Up Diploma, which includes more rigorous requirements than the regular high school diploma in

science, math and English, as well as the completion of a senior project. This diploma has been designed to

prepare students for success upon graduation from high school, whether they choose to enroll in college orenter the workforce.

Students who pledge to earn this diploma receive a number of benefits

    , including information on college

preparation and financial aid, and invitations to college-prep events throughout their years in high school.

Upon graduation, students who earn the BOE Step Up Diploma are rewarded with special incentives, such

as special consideration for scholarships, admission into Hawaii colleges, and job application advancement

    with various employers.

Pledge forms are available at our school, print them from the link below, or download them at

www.stepuphawaii.org . Turn the forms into your schools office, or

    counselor.

Do it now! You must pledge your commitment to the Board of Education Step Up Diploma by May

    31, 2011.
