AIR FORCE ONE: AN HONOR, PRIVILEGE, AND PLEASURE TO SERVEJoin us on Thursday, February 26 at 7p.m. for a fascinating evening with John L. Haigh, former Chief Steward on

Air Force One.In September 1979, John Haigh was selected as a permanent member of the Air Force One flight crew and

served on flights with heads of states from Great Britain, China, Germany, and Turkey and accompanied the Apollo 17 astronauts as they took a 33-day goodwill tour around the world. He later served as Chief Steward during the latter part of President Reagan’s second term of office and three and a half years of President George Bush, senior’s first term. In Mr. Haigh’s own words, “it truly was a privilege and pleasure to serve the presidents aboard Air Force One.”

With photographs and intriguing stories, Mr. Haigh will describe those flights, both historic and dangerous, as he became well acquainted with the men who served in the highest office of our country.

His book, Air Force One: An Honor, Privilege, And Pleasure to Serve will be available for those who wish to purchase a copy. Registration required.

TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE BEGINS Northland Public Library, in cooperation with AARP, is once again offering

free tax preparation assistance for senior citizens and low-income residents on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. from February 3 through April 14. IRS-trained volunteers will help in preparing both federal and state

forms. This service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and we cannot guarantee that everyone needing help can be accommodated on any given day. Please remember to bring all necessary paperwork to complete the forms. A signup sheet will be located outside of the lower lobby entrance so early arrivals can register and then either wait in their car or return when the library opens.

Book Nook: We have a great selection of presidential biographies and treats for your Valentine in February! Former Lucky Day Collection items (bestseller books and newly released DVDs) are available at unbeatable prices. Flash drives, ear buds, coffee and snacks are available for purchase in the Book Nook. nFOREIGN FILM: The Forgotten Kingdom, Wednesday, February 11 at 1:30 p.m.

Atang Mokoenya leaves the slums of Johannes-burg to return to his ancestral land of Lesotho, where he must bury his estranged father in the remote, mountainous village where he was born.

Stirred by memories of his youth, he falls in love with his childhood friend, Dineo, now a school teacher. Through her, Atang is drawn toward the mystical beauty and hardships of the people and land he had forgotten. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.

Wednesday, February 18 at 2 p.m.

Bolivia is landlocked high in the Andes Mountains and is the last Indian country in the Americas. We’ll visit La Paz, Sucre, Sipe Sipe, Potosi and Uyuni. Each of these cities is rich in both history and culture.

Highlights include watching a New Year’s Festival, visiting a silver mine, a salt desert and a hotel made of salt. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.

On February 3 at 7 p.m., the group will discuss The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer. He tells the story of the past three decades through profiles of several Americans, from a factory worker in Youngstown to an Internet billionaire. Packer interweaves the stories of public figures, newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics.

March’s book will be Little Failure by Gary Shteyngart.

TACTILE TUESDAYS – New!This is a brand new hour-long program that will let young adults get their hands dirty! Starting Tuesday, February 3 at 3 p.m., the group will meet in the Board room across from the Young Adult room. This group will meet on the first Tuesday of each month doing something different, Legos, crafts, or a surprise. Students from sixth to twelfth grade are welcome. No registration is required.

TEEN THURSDAYS Teen Thursdays is an after school program for older teens in grades nine to twelve. A variety of activities are enjoyed by attendees every Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. No registration is required.

Northland In the CommunityIn 2014, the children’s/young adult department conducted 157 outreach visits reaching approximately 8,329 patrons in daycares, preschools, kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools and high schools in each our five supporting municipalities, Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Marshall, McCandless and Ross. This is an increase of 55% more outreach than 2013 which is due in part to the generous support of the Northland Public Library Foundation. Expect to see us in your community soon in 2015.

These languages and 55 more, are available for study through Northland’s website. Simply go to www.northlandlibrary.org/databases, and click on “Mango Languages” to set up an account with your library card and gain access to 64 different courses of study.

Mango Languages provides standard online interactive courses, complete with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, quizzes, and refreshers. But additional features make it more fun than most online learning. When a user creates an account, Mango Languages will save progress in the cloud and will share this on Facebook and Twitter. Apps are available for iPhone, iPod and Android. Children have their own language resource within Mango called Little Pim, with Little Pim the panda as the star.

WHAT IS A TABLET? Tuesday, February 10 from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.During this presentation, participants will learn what a tablet is as well as some common uses for a tablet. Participants will also get an overview of some basic tablet features. Even though the class format is lecture-based, participants will get some hands on practice with tablets during the session. Participants do not need to bring their own tablets because tablets will be provided.

In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library?Marilyn volunteers at the Book Nook because it’s fun. While she is helping the Library, she enjoys helping others (our

customers), from the person paying 15 cents for a copy to someone looking for a book for Grandma and everyone in between. Marilyn believes that if variety is your spice of life, then the Book Nook is a great place to volunteer!

Marilyn practices her philosophy in volunteering as reflected by her many years of service. She began volunteering in January 2006 and for multiple years; she has contributed over 90 hours per year. Northland’s reputation as a vital com-munity asset is reinforced daily due to the efforts of Marilyn as well as all fellow library volunteers.

How We WorkNorthland Public Library is the second largest library in the county with over 200,000 items in cir-

culation. The Technical Services Department helps organize this collection. This department includes seven employees. The goal is to maintain a level of standardization consistent with the Library of Congress, Allegheny County libraries, and Northland circulation, adult, and children’s departments.

So, what exactly do we do? All library materials are processed by Technical Services. This includes new materials chosen by adult and children’s librarians plus items that are donated by the community. Processing includes: receiving, invoicing, and sorting orders; barcoding, dating, and property stamping; cataloging; labeling; covering books; packaging AV materials; and preparing memorial items.

In addition, Technical Services ensures that every item is programmed for self-checkout and future circulation throughout Allegheny County. The materials that we process include books, audio books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, CDs, playaways and playaway videos.
