WISE WALKS RESUMEGet ready for another 10-week Wise Walk

program beginning Tuesday, September 1 at 9:30 a.m. Participants will meet with Wise Walk leader, Mary Jean Voigt, at the library to receive information and handouts, then will go to North Park to walk for 30 to 45 minutes.

For the remaining nine weeks, the group will meet each Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Pie Traynor Field in North Park to walk together and enjoy the fall weather. Water and snacks will be provided. Please register.

RITE-AID FLU SHOT CLINIC On Friday, September 4, 2015 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Northland will host a flu shot clinic that Rite-Aid will be running. Participants should bring their health insurance cards and be prepared to fill out the necessary paper work. Medicare, Highmark, Security Blue, UPMC Health Plan, Cigna, Gateway, United Healthcare, Health America, TriCare and Aetna will be accepted. For non-insured patients, the cash price of the vaccine is $31.99. Cash and check will be accepted. Please bring insurance cards and vaccination records if you have them to the clinic. TURKISH COOKING CLASS Have you ever tried Turkish cuisine? In either case, you should join us to learn more about the cuisine of this interesting culture on Thursday, September 10 at 7 p.m. Gonca Teker will demonstrate the preparation of a tasty vegetable and bulgur salad called Kisir. This salad makes a great side dish with barbecued meat or chicken. Taste samples of the salad and learn what wine or other beverage pairs well with this dish. Please register.

TAI CHI CLASSES RESUME Northland Library is pleased to sponsor another ten-week series of Tai Chi classes, to be held at the

Activity Center at Blueberry Hill Park in Franklin Park Borough on Monday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon beginning on Monday, September 14 through Monday, November 16. Vincenza Furst, certified Tai Chi instructor, will lead this popular series. Please register so we know to expect you!Tai Chi is a centuries-old Chinese practice designed to exercise the mind and body through a series of gentle, flowing postures. Tai Chi can improve strength, balance, flexibility and coordination. It may also improve heart function and decrease blood pressure. On Saturday, September 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, bring your sports collectibles to the Ross Township Municipal Building and get an informal appraisal from Michael Osacky, nationally recognized vintage sports card and sports memorabilia appraiser.

Northland Library is pleased to welcome Mr. Osacky, who appears on TV and travels the country to help people evaluate their sports collections. Mr.Osacky will give a presentation on sports collecting with tips on how to find and recognize that great article you’ve wanted for your collection. After his presentation, he will provide each person with a free verbal appraisal on each item. He deals in nothing produced after the mid-1970’s. Please register.

SHINING A LIGHT ON SOLAR ENERGY IN THE NORTH HILLS

Solar energy is the fastest growing energy source in the world. While the Pittsburgh region has many cloudy days, we receive much more sun than Germany - the leading solar energy nation! There are already more than 7,000 solar installations in Pennsylvania. Many people choose solar energy for the environmental benefits and others choose it to save thousands of dollars over the lifetime of the system.

Ross Township is partnering with non-profit SmartPower as part of the Solarize Allegheny project, funded by the Heinz Endowment to expand the use of solar energy in Allegheny County. Sharon Pillar, vice-president of SmartPower and project director for Solarize Allegheny will describe the benefits of solar energy and help you decide if your home or business is good for solar. Volunteer FocusExciting programs and creative events scored another successful Summer Reading Club (SRC) at Northland. Along with Anna and Jasmine, many eager and caring volunteers stepped up to the plate to assist library staff day after day with whatever jobs needed to be done.

2,268 toddler, student and teen participants came to SRC to learn, discover and enjoy any of the 22 team programs along with any of the 59 pre-school and school age programs for a total of 81 awesome happenings. Stories, songs and games highlighted Picture Book Picnics, while introduction to Spanish was entertaining and educational for preschoolers. Drawing and design took place in Superhero Swag and fun with food science concluded the Teen SRC.

Volunteer’s Assignment and Schedule: Anna volunteered during the Summer Reading Club in the Children’s Department and helped in several key capacities whenever she was free during the summer.

In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library?Anna remembers coming to the library as a child, and the Summer Reading Club was always her favorite thing, besides the books. She enjoyed seeing the new generation getting the same experience as she had and watched the smiles on their faces when they came to greet her at the volunteer aide desk. According to Anna, “Volunteering also gives me valuable experience that can be useful later in life, such as working with people and having patience with children.”

Volunteer’s Assignment and Schedule: Jasmine helped during popular events such as Mother Goose Olympics, Science Spot and Engineering Super Heroes in addition to several shifts on the volunteer aide desk.

In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? Jasmine wanted to volunteer at the library since last year, but never had time until this year and she wanted to help out with the kids and also get to work with them. “The programs are a lot of fun and a great experience and opportunity to help out.” She enjoys working and helping with the kids, other volunteers and staff.

Northland Public Library FoundationValerie Golik of Marshall Township has been named Director of Development for Northland Public Library and Director

of the Northland Public Library Foundation. She is tasked with raising funds that support programs and activities for the library and its patrons.

“Northland Public Library is more than just the second largest library in Allegheny County; it’s a community treasure,” Valerie said, adding that she is “delighted to be able to be a part of an organization that does so much good for my neighbors and others throughout the region.”

Valerie brings with her a wealth of experience in grant writing, donor cultivation, event management, board development, strategic planning and marketing. She is an avid proponent of philanthropy, noting that great things happen when people share their time, talent and treasures with organizations they believe in.
