Respect for Self Respect for Others Respect for Property
Message from the Principal: 13 April 2018
Dear Parents/Caregivers
It is hard to believe we are at the end of the first term already but as we look back there has been no shortage of quality learning, whole school events, camps and all sorts of activities that make a school busy and exciting. This week finished with Mr Reid's "Pirates". This has become an institution in itself and many past and present students will have fond memories of this amazing set-up. Mr Dale Kington has been appointed to the position of HOD Health and Physical Education and starts in week 5 of next term. Mr Kington is currently at King’s College in Auckland. Yesterday we also farewelled two staff members; Mrs Melissa Palmer, one of our Teacher Aides, and Mrs Catherine Baldock, who has been long term relieving for Mrs Cairns while she has been on maternity leave. Both have been an asset to the school and will be missed. I would like to congratulate all of our Year 7&8 students who competed at the Southland Primary Athletics last Saturday. It was less than ideal conditions but it was great to see NSC so strongly represented and a list of specific achievements is in this newsletter. Also well done to our thespians who performed in the production of Shrek as part of the Gore Musical Theatre. Recently some changes to the Food Act have come into force which will have an unfortunate impact on our canteen. A true case of bureaucracy gone mad but we will have to comply. I will update you all when we have worked through a solution. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and to thank all students who will be attending the Anzac Day services in our area. Noho ora mai

ANZAC Day If students are wishing to attend an ANZAC Day Service, we ask that they go in correct, tidy school uniform to represent our school and show respect to the fallen soldiers.
Some of the fantastic Gold Mufti Day dress-ups. The gold coin donations
collected went to St John Ambulance. The last week of Term has been about reflection . A time to think back on how you‘ve worked towards your goals and improved your general well being. Now it’s time to make a plan for the holidays. The holidays are a time to relax, rest, enjoy and recharge for Term 2. It’s also a perfect time to catch up on any school work. We look forward to seeing you all fresh and ready next Term!

The Y12 Biology class are studying the structure and function of the respiratory and circulatory system, focusing on gas exchange and internal transport. The students took a hands-on approach and dissected some sheep plucks on Thursday.
The Y7C8 classes are studying the geology of Northern Southland. They used chocolate as a model to show the formation of different rocks and to explain the rock cycle.

15 Students have been studying Agricultural topics during Friday Clubs time and over Google Classroom this term, in preparation for the TeenAg and Agrikids contest being held as part of the Otago Southland Young Farmer of the Year competition at Browns on Saturday, April 21
st. I team of Lachy
Elder, Fynn Mitchell and Jack Merchant are competing at 9.30 in the Agrikids part; and five teams, comprising Arron Sangster and Kane Graham, Josh Bennett and Ollie Trusler, Scott Cullen and Cameron Slatterly, Kyle Hansen and Izac Elder, Kate Bennet and Adriana Evans, and Bernice Cullen and Dylan Bulleid, are all competing at 11.30 at Browns.
