The petition was set up with the hope of gaining awareness on the crippling costs of buying school books for families. It is hoped that the campaign will attract the signa- tures of parents and teachers alike with the view to convincing Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn, to establish the much needed rental scheme. The situation in Malahide is no different. As a result, Malahide Chamber of Commerce is in constant contact with the local authority in respect of its ongoing water problems. A delegation, led by Derek Fowler with Barry Gibney and Dave Gorman met with council officials and sought a better form of contact when issues arise from water shortages, or any other form of interrup- tion that may affect their ability to operate busi- nesses correctly. A Chamber spokesperson said, “During the meeting, an attempt was made to have water rates reduced to businesses that were adversely affected by water related problems last December. These companies suffered a serious loss of revenue while still incurring costs, directly from water being turned off and will obviously still be affected going forward. However, this hopeful request would not be considered.” On a more positive note, the Chamber have been assured that “all works to improve the Malahide water system are in place. They will have, by the end of next year, an extended capacity to the reservoir. This should double in size, while also renewing pipelines from this facility to the town. Other options are to supply water directly to the town, should any future problems arise that restrict the main supply.” The council have committed to upgrading their tele- phone system to include a better live service over the week-end periods when disruption takes place. It’s absolutely not on. Parents in some instances don’t even know if their children are going to be able to go to school because of this decision. Remember Us Special Needs Group inBalbriggan have been granted €15,000 by theMinister for Health, Dr James Reilly TD from hisDepartment's 2011 allocation of NationalLottery funds.Families will benefit greatly from the Respitebreaks. The grant will be used to provide twofamily respite breakaways in 2011. The firstFamily Respite break took place in late May tothe Share Holiday Village in Co. Fermanagh fortwo nights, where 60 people, includingmembers and their families had the opportunityto participate in various water sport, Arts andCrafts, drama, wall climbing, archery and so

much more while on the break. The second is been planned for the mid-termbreak in November for three nights to theCarlton Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co.Galway. It's anticipated that 180 people willparticipate in this trip based on last year'ssuccessful trip there. The breaks develop friend-ships between families and gives a muchneeded respite break to all who attend. It alsoallows less privileged families to experienceactivities they would otherwise not have theopportunity to experience due to economic andpersonal circumstances. Families are encour-aged to go as a whole, making it a personaldevelopment programme for the family as aunit. It gives so many families an opportunity tohave a break in a friendly atmosphere wherethey can feel comfortable and at ease becausethey are with so many people who are in asimilar situation to themselves. It gives theparents /carers an opportunity to meet andshare information in an informal setting.

Deputy Clare Daly (SP)has hit out at both theCouncil and theGovernment for the axingof the Park Ranger facilityfrom both the WardRivervalley Park and theSwords Town Park. Deputy Daly said, “Thereis no doubt that therecruitment embargo andthe cutbacks in govern-ment funding haveplaced councils in impos-sible positions. The ParksDepartment in particular,

Swords To Be LeftWithout Park Rangers

has lost a lot of staffthrough retirement, thesepositions have not beenreplaced, significantly

increasing the workloadon those remaining. Localcommunities should notbe left like this. It is justnot good enough.” She continued, “Theproblem in Swords isbeing made worse by theabsolute affront that ourtown is the only onewhich is losing its ParkRangers. The regionalparks in Malahide,Skerries, Donabate andso on, are being covered. Why is Swords beingsingled out? Why do wenot deserve our parks tobe properly cared for? This is really shortsighted. Only lastweekend there was

damage done to the play-ground in the Valleywhich necessitated a bigclean up later, putting theCouncil to extra expense. Having Park Rangers inplace is much more effi-cient and really helps tohave these importantamenities maintained forthe benefit of all. I ampublicly appealing to theCouncil to reverse thisdecision, before the Parkis allowed deteriorate, which will end up costingmore in the long run. Withless money around, people need to have thebenefits of local parks andamenities during thesummer months.”

The discovery of human remains by Eirgrid workers has thrown up a number ofpossibilities about their origin. A total of three skulls with other bones werefound in a field close to the edge of the Rogerstown Estuary in Rush duringexcavation work last week.Rush resident and local historian, Kevin Thorp, who has studied ancient burialgrounds in the area, feels that the remains may date back 5,000 years to theBronze Age. He said, “an eyewitness who saw the remains said he thought theywere pretty brown and crumbly, which points to them being very old indeed, maybe up to five to six thousand years old. We know that people lived here atthat time as not only have heaps of shells called kitchen middens been found inthe area in the past but at least two chieftain’s burials were discovered in fieldsvery nearby,” he said.Thorp continued, “It is possible that these remains are of Norse origin, but thearchaeologists will pinpoint pretty accurately whether they are or not. Thereare a number of possibilities here. If there are any vestiges of clothes in thisgrave, they are likely to be some victims from the Tayleur disaster of 2IstJanuary 1854, when an emigrant ship sailing to Melbourne sank off Lambaydrowning over 300 people, mostly women and children. If they were victims ofthe Tayleur tragedy, its possible that the reason they were not buried inWhitestown cemetery was because they were of unknown provenance andcould not be buried in a Catholic graveyard in case they had not been baptised.

The County Council willno longer be involved inrefuse collection fromearly next year. Thenews comes hot on theheels of a process ofevaluation by anoutside agency, whichdeemed the Council’sBin collection service as‘not viable’. Thisapparent inability of thelocal authority to affordto continue this service

now opens the way forprivate companies tofully take over refusecollection in the region. This trend has been repli-cated all over the countryand now only Dublin CityCouncil are the soleremaining local authorityto continue providing bincollection in their areaHappily, there will be no

job losses as a result andthe 55 staff involved inthe refuse collectionservice will be rede-ployed to other divisionswithin the localauthority. Former CountyMayor, Ken Farrell toldthe County Leader, “TheCouncil needs to reach80 per cent collectionrate to make it viable. Atthe moment, they areonly achieving 55 - 60

per cent, which ismaking the processunsustainable. Anotherreason forwarded byFarrell is that “thewaiver system meantthat the local authoritywas placed in an unevencompetitive situationwith private companiesin the bin collectionbusiness.” He alsoexpressed his sadnessat the passing of asystem that has been inoperation for over 50years.

Speaking to the County Leader, Principal MiriamDowdall of St Helen’s JNS, Portmarnock said: “It issomething we would definitely back, we haveintroduced our own system on a smaller scalewhere we would recycle books back in to it yearly.Anything that cuts down costs for parents is most welcome.”SVP believes that the scheme would help everyfamily in the North County as it would reduce thehuge amounts spent on buying these books. It hasattracted thousands of signatures so far withnumbers growing every day.Audrey Deane, Social Policy & Justice Officer forSVP said: “We’re delighted how it’s going, so far,we have thousands of signatures and we spokewith the Minister for Education who has agreedthat something needs to be done urgently.”“More and more people have been coming to us oflate as it is the time of year when book lists aresent out. Families are being put in a situation ofanxiety and hardship wondering where they’regoing to get this money from when it could all beso avoidable.” It is understood that Minister Quinnhas contacted school book publishers on the situ-ation and is currently awaiting a response.

Tidy Towns FeverHits RushThe Tidy Towns competition has made a “huge differ-ence” to Rush according to Tidy Towns committeemember Louise O’Loughlin. Speaking to the CountyLeader recently, Louise said that the resurrection of theTidy Towns has been fantastic for the town: “The effortsput in by everyone involved have just been brilliant,”she said. “It’s our first time entering the Tidy Townscontest in 10 years and the difference compared to lastyear has been huge. So whether we win or not, justbeing involved has given Rush a boost and it’s great tosee the town looking so well.” Louise says one of thebest things about being involved in Tidy Towns hasbeen the community efforts: “There has been a hugefocus on a community effort this year which is fantasticto see. Everyone is really involved and we have peopleout every week doing the clean ups. It wouldn’t bepossible without the whole community’s input.”

Prepare a Natural Compost Bin CarefulSelection Of Plants

Where toWater

If you plan on doing a lot of gardening, it’s always agood idea to provide the plants with naturalfertilisers. The installation of natural compost bin willhelp in providing the plants with natural nutrition. This will not only maximise the growth of the plantsbut will also save a lot of money. All you need is tocollect the dead and dried leaves in this bin and coverthem with soil. Within a span of few months highquality fertilizer will be prepared. It’s very easy to do,cheap and above all is very good for your plants.

The first and foremoststep is to select theplant properly. It isvery important thatthe plant you choosefor your garden mustcomplement nature aswell. This means thatit can adapt itselfproperly in heat, dryness and summer.Another importantpoint to remember isthat before you selecta plant you mustcheck the conditionsof your garden as welllike the pH of the soilor the amount ofsunlight your gardenreceives.

Watering is a chore thatneeds to be carried outthroughout thesummer season, butremember to use waterwisely and, rather thandrenching your entiregarden regularly, concentrate yourefforts on thefollowing: Plantsgrowing in pots, containers and hangingbaskets as these candry out very quickly, often in the course of afew hours. Newlyplanted trees andshrubs, as these arevery vulnerable todrought stress, as areany freshly sown ornewly planted parts ofyour garden so waterthem all on a regularbasis.

There’s no betterway to celebrate thesummer season thatto add some colourand vibrancy to yourgarden. For extrasplashes of colour inyour garden you mayconsider ContainerPlanting or HangingBaskets. Rememberto regularly turn yourpots though so theplants get equalexposure, otherwisethe side facing thewall will performpoorly in comparisonto the side in directsunshine.

A Splash of Colour

Staking and SupportPut stakes and supports in place for tall, herba-ceous plants, like peonies and delphiniums. Thiswill prevent them from falling over or look messy,as they grow taller and heavy with blooms with theprogressing season. Likewise, as climbers displaynew growth, be sure to position them on a supportsystem in order to maintain control over wherethey grow and prevent an untidy appearance.

Healthy plants must be selected for the garden toensure they survive the summer season: Make surethat the plants you select for your garden arehealthy. Avoid purchasing the plants, which havediscoloration, drooping leaves or appear sickly. Ifyou are starting your garden with seeds then makesure that the seeds you purchase are of high quality.

Fingal County Enterprise Board haveconfirmed that almost €600,000 of grantaid has already been approved for 48 indi-vidual start-up businesses, which arebeing set up by former SR Technicsworkers in the North County and beyond. However, the Fingal County EnterpriseBoard has cautioned that other SRTechnics workers who want to set up theirown business in this region could miss outon grant aid worth thousands of euro andcrucial business support services unless

they act quickly. Under the EuropeanGlobalisation Fund (E.G.F), former SRTechnics workers at Dublin Airport whowere made redundant after February 12th2009, can apply for grant assistance tofund the setting up of a new business. The local Enterprise Board is warning thatformer SR Technics workers could miss outon valuable financial assistance and busi-ness support services, unless they submittheir business proposals quickly. Oisin Geoghegan, CEO of the Fingal County

Enterprise Board, said: “The value of eachgrant varies from project to project, but atypical employment grant is in the regionof €10,000, depending on the job specifi-cation. To apply for funding under theE.G.F, SR Technics workers first have tosubmit a business proposal outlining theirenterprise idea. As the final deadline isonly a couple of weeks away, Geogheganis concerned that some SR Technicsworkers might miss out on accessingimportant grant aid.” Applications shouldbe submitted to the Enterprise Board andall applications are subject to appraisal byan Evaluation Committee to assess thebusiness proposal. Top Tips ToSpruce UpYour HomeThis SummerMany schools arenearing the end of theyear and since wecan’t rely on theweather, that’s a suresign that summer ison its way. As weapproach summer-time, many home-owners want tospruce up their homeswith a decoratingmakeover to matchthe season. Why nottry out some of ourtips to bring the lazy, carefree summer daysinto your home.

Spruce It Up With FlowersI say this time and time again, but one of the easiestand most cost effective ways to make an impact iswith the addition of fresh flowers. I recommendfresh cut, brightly coloured flowers either from yourown garden (if you happen to be so lucky) or fromthe local florist. Place them in a light and under-stated vase; avoid heavy, dark or bulky vases andlet the flowers take centre stage. Placement shouldbe casual and on table/counter tops to ensure theflowers are always visible. Consider the foyer, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom as prime locations.

Paint Is All AroundThinking of painting? Well now would be theideal time to get those paint brushes out. Youhave the perfect excuse to go bright, light andcheery and get colours to compliment yourbreezy summer humour. A bright paint instantlytransforms the light in a room and can makewhat may be like a small room seem big andairy. It will give your room and your mood amuch-needed lift. Try mixing in different colourschemes such as greens, blues and whites toliven up a room and bring a feel of the ocean intoyour home. It may not be as good as the beachbut it’s a start.

I meet Robbie Corr, Sports Officerwith Prosper Fingal at their trainingcentre on Seatown Road in Swords. It

was a day of celebration for five athletesfrom the service as they prepare to travelto Athens to represent Ireland at theSpecial Olympics World Summer Games.“Our athletes have overcome majorobstacles in life and have battled hardagainst stiff competition to achieve thishonour,” he comments proudly, amidstgreat warmth and much slaggingbetween Robbie and the team members. A keen sportsman, Robbie believes participation inphysical activity is invaluable in terms of personalwell being. “We're influencing people's lives atProsper by having them train three times a week.We work on all aspects of life, not just going out andbouncing a ball. I give dietary and nutritional advicetoo, even though I know I could do with it myself,”he laughs. The success of the sports programme atProsper is evidenced by the fact that almost half ofthe 240 service users across North County Dublinparticipate in it. As Robbie points out, “this is instark contrast to the three per cent of the generalpopulation who exercise regularly.”Robbie's love of sport goes back to his teenageyears when he played soccer for Loughshinny, astrong Intermediate team at the time. As a talentedfootballer, when he left school he lived many youngboy's dream and completed a FAS soccer coachingcourse, run in conjunction with the FootballAssociation of Ireland. “I got to play lots of football

and in the process earn coaching badges,” Robbiesays “but on finishing the course I realised that Iwas a good player but not a great player.” However, one of the course facilitators, Fran Butlerbelieved Robbie had 'the potential and flair to be acoach' and encouraged him to apply to Camp USAas a sports counsellor. He subsequently spentfour hot summers in New Jersey buildingup vital experience teaching variousdifferent sports. While enjoyingevery minute of his time in theStates, in 1998 he decided itwas time to settle in Irelandand “start looking at acareer.” Having returned home, heundertook a course in HealthStudies at the NationalCollege of Education in DorsetStreet in 1999 to complementhis coaching experience. “Itwas part-time, so I workedduring the day on building sitesand at night time went tocollege.” On completing thecourse, Robbie began working inthe Iveagh Fitness Centre

teaching aerobics, gym work and personal training. After a year there he was approached by MarianBrowne then with the County Council to run the gymin Skerries Community Centre. Living in Laytownwith his family, this position was ideal for Robbie.

A few years later, Marian also askedRobbie about the possibility ofProsper Fingal service userscoming to the gym for a workoutevery week and he thought it agreat idea. “They started to comedown every Friday afternoon and Iwould teach aerobics and show

them how to use the gym equip-ment.” Eventually, having built up a

close rapport with the group,Robbie resigned from the

Community Centre and beganworking with Prosper as a

care assistant in thetraining centre, whichwas based inPiercetown at the time.

“It was great! I had my sports training and now I waslearning about all types of disability.” Robbie was eventually appointed sports co-ordi-nator of Prosper Fingal in 2006 just as a consciousdecision was made to invest more time and energyinto their sporting programme. Relishing this opportunity, Robbie approachedConan Byrne of Sporting Fingal with a view to estab-lishing an eleven a-side club team for players withintellectual disability. While Sporting Fingal has nowceased to exist, the team established by Robbie withthe assistance of Conan and Richie Dunne fromSpecial Olympics has gone from strength tostrength. “There are now 23 athletes playing soccerand, as it's a club team, it's run very differently tothe Prosper service which is good for the guysbecause it gives them another experience.” “Across all our sports, there's great camaraderie

among the athletes and the stronger ones watch outfor the weaker ones which is brilliant for teammorale.” One of Prosper Fingal's goals is thefostering of independence and Robbie explains thatall service users travel to training venues indepen-dently, “whether it's soccer training in Skerries orswimming in ALSAA.” While sport encourages the integration of Prosper'sservice users, other pursuits which facilitate sociali-sation, such as trips to the cinema or going out fordinner are organised by the recreation officerSinead, and staff member Ciara, and Robbie enjoysgetting involved in these activities too. While his role at Prosper Fingal keeps him extremelybusy, Robbie also makes plenty of time for hisyoung family, six year old Seán and three year oldRuby. “Seán waits for me to come home at night totell him a bedtime story,” he laughs. “I also do a bitof 'DJ’ing' in my spare time for the fun of it. My wife,Victoria is very patient and deserves a gold star!” With the Special Olympics beginning on 25th June,Robbie is looking forward to joining the athletes forthe opening ceremony and being there to cheerthem on as they battle it out in their chosen sport. He believes that everyone involved will have a 'lifeexperience to treasure forever' and has urged allathletes to 'come home with a smile.' The SpecialOlympics World Summer Games runs from 25th Juneto 4th July and we wish all athletes taking part 'thebest of luck.'
