Dublin. Tel: 8•400•200 • [email protected] Little Molly McNally, the brave six year old Balbriggan girl, is continuing to charm people all over the North County. Molly, who has stage four Neuroblastoma, a rare child- hood cancer, is having treat- ment at Crumlin Hospital. Molly is a mascot for the Dublin Ladies football team, and local girl Lyndsey Davey from Skerries, who plays for the Dublin senior team, raised funds for the loveable little Balbriggan girl at an event recently. The Kube is a fundraiser for Skerries Harps GAA club. They are raising money for the new clubhouse that is currently being built. A total of 41 contes- tants took part on the night at CityNorth Hotel, Gormanston. Once all contestants raised their entry fee, they could pick a charity to donate the remainder of their sponsorship money. Also, the prize fund of 3,000 went to your chosen charity. Darren Bailey won on the night, and his chosen charity was Pieta House. Lyndsey told the County Leader, “I play Gaelic for the Dublin senior ladies and Molly was our mascot for the All- Ireland final against Cork. A week before the final, we learnt that Molly was going to be our mascot and that is when I found out about her battle with neuroblastoma. Molly and her family came to visit the team the week of the final, and she was presented with a Dublin jersey and pink boots.” “After the final, I was asked to take part in The Kube. When I found that I could donate my sponsorship money, the Molly McNally Miracle Trust was my first choice. Thanks to the generous donations from my friends and family, I managed to raised over 1,100 for Molly,” said a delighted Lyndsey. Dubs Star Lyndsey Fundraises For Molly In a quirky twist, this subsidy also applies to rural resi- dents, many of whom are not customers of Irish Water, including those on group water schemes. They will get the 100 water subsidy - but it will be September 2015 before it is paid. The new payment will be paid out on a one-off basis, rather than on a quarterly system as previously envis- aged, the Department of Social Protection has confirmed. This payment is not means tested, and all householders will be able to apply for it on their primary residence - including those on group water schemes, or with private supplies - as long as they register with Irish Water. Swords councillor, Anne Devitt (NP), who lives in rural North County Dublin, was gobsmacked at the news. She told the County Leader, “Irish Water are charging people for water coming in and water going out. If you don’t have water coming in, you don’t pay, and the same applies if you don’t have water going out (waste- water). “If you have only one of them, you pay half. The charge currently stands at 160 for one person for both water in and water out. I don’t have water out, as I have a bio cycle system. This means that I will only be charged 80. However, this new conservation grant means I will pay 80, and they will give me back 100 - a profit of 20 for nothing. I find that a nonsense,” she said. “Some of my neighbours have their own water, both in and out, through having a well, and a septic tank, or bio cycle system. That means that these people will not be paying for water, but as long as they register with Irish Water, they will get a nice cheque for 100 next September. All of us in the rural area have always known that we had to pay for the privilege of living in a rural area, and accepted that we had to pay for water services. The question I ask is why, and it just goes to show the nonsense of this, and the notion of giving money back to willing payers, is disgraceful. I’m actually upset by it,” she said. However, she conceded that it makes no economic sense for rural people not to register with Irish Water, and to avail of this unlikely bonanza. At a recent Council meeting, the councillor asked the Chief Executive, Paul Reid, for an update with regards to the removal of the disused kiosks. A Council spokesperson confirmed that, owners, Westont Ltd have been in contact with Fingal County Council Operations Department in relation to the unused Smart Telecom phone kiosks and associated structures at a number of locations across the county. The Council also confirmed they are currently in negotiations with Dublin City Council and other local councils, with a view to repurposing the units into more suitable services, including free WiFi. “We hope to roll this out to all areas later in the year,” the Council said. “We will send an engineer out to look at the units in Swords and clean them up as much as possible. “If this question is passed, a further letter will issue requesting an update on these kiosks and when a reply is received, the members for the Electoral Area will be notified,” the Council explained. Significant ConcernsOver Swiftway ProposalThe combined residents associationsof both Glen Ellan and SandfordWood in Swords, representingapproximately 500 houses, have verysignificant concerns pertaining to thecurrent proposal for the Swiftway BRTsystem.

The new Swiftway Bus is proposed torun from Applewood CommunityCentre, down the Glen Ellan Road andinto City Centre. They claim that the controversial newbus service that is proposed to runthrough their community, will have amajor impact on their quality of life.Representative of the residents asso-ciation, Donal Cassidy told theCounty Leader, “Residents have puttogether concerns regarding thecurrent proposal for the routing of the

Swiftway BRT system through theirarea. It will jeopardise the safety ofour children, pedestrians and cyclistsand reduce Glen Ellan Park Greenarea by up to eight metres for a newSwiftway Bus stop.”Residents also claim that it willpedestrianise Jugback Lane and willlead to the removal of the Skate Parkon Balheary Road. Grass verges andtrees will also be removed on GlenEllan Road, as well as reducing carparking spaces at local schools.

They also claim that major trafficproblems will arise through thereplacement of all roundaboutsalong the Swords route, with widerjunctions and traffic signals that willprioritise the Swiftway bus, leading tomajor traffic implications for cars trav-elling, on what is already a verycongested route. The removal ofpedestrian bridges along the routewill significantly impact on pedestriansafety and ability to access otherparts of Swords. Cassidy is appealingto all local residents to make submis-sions.directly to the NTA before 5pm onFriday 28th November athttp://www.nationaltransport.ie/consultations/public-consultation-on-swiftway-bus-rapid-transit-swordsair-port-to-city-centre, or by post to: BRTConsultation, NTA, Dún Scéine,

This week, the parliament meets inStrasbourg, and members will beaddressed by Pope Francis. When aPontiff last visited the Parliament some26 years ago, the then Northern IrelandMEP, Ian Paisley protested, denouncing John Paul ll as theAntichrist. On this occasion, humanist organ-isations have written to MartinSchultz, the Parliament’sPresident, stating that it is inap-propriate for a religious leader tobe invited to address a secularparliament. The address by thePope will be watched withinterest, as he sets out the church’svision of Europe’s role for the twenty firstcentury. Some level of protest is

expected, which results in height-ened security controlling thepublic’s access to the

Parliament. Ten days ago a toplessprotest against thevisit was staged at theVatican by Feman, a Parisbased feminist organisation. They originated in Ukraine andappear to have a few hundredactivists with a larger followingon social media. Juncker’s trou-bles arising from the alleged tax

avoidance schemes, which operatedduring the period when he wasLuxembourg’s Prime Minister continue.

He now faces a motion of censure tabledby the far-right, Europe of Freedom andDirect Democracy group, comprisedmainly of UKIP and Italy’s Five Star

Movement. They are joined byFrance’s Marine Le Pen, other

far-right and non-aligned MEPsmaking up the 76 signaturesrequired to sponsor the peti-tion. The far-left GUE group,

of which Sinn Fein and LukeMing Flanagan are members,

failed in their attempt to attractsufficient numbers for their motion.

The two groups’ combined total fall wellshort of the number required to pass theresolution, so it is difficult to see howthere is any real prospect of the motionattaining sufficient votes to be adopted. But the issue seems likely to continue tocause Juncker problems over the imme-diate future.

We asked, “Is Roy Keanebecoming a liability forthe Irish Football Team?

Peter Gargan, SwordsNo, I think he’s just being hounded by the press.

He’s speaking his mind and the press are publishingit, that’s not fair.

John Cunningham, SwordsI’ve always thought he was a liability since he ranaway in Saipan - he always has been.

Ray Savage, SwordsNo, he speaks his mind, he speaks the truth. Martin

O’Neill has known Roy Keane for years, and heknows Roy Keane is committed to the cause.

YOURVIEWWith reporters Jemma Came

and Athina Anastasiou

Mark McNulty, UKI think he is probably, yes. I think his personality is

too dominating, Martin O’Neill should be the one inthe spotlight.

Alan Byrne, SwordsNo, I think it’s just gone a bit over the top - he’s goodfor the team, but I think people are just trying to geton top, more than him being the boss.

Gerry Ryan, SwordsHe is a liability, he was the best player that everplayed in Ireland, I can say that, but as a coach andas a person, he has no manners.

Noel Harper, Balbriggan Not in the least, he’s worth everything that he does,

i think so.

Daryll Howe, SwordsI don’t know much about football, but I’d say no,

stick with Roy Keane.

Robert Walsh, SwordsOverall no, his coaching makes up for anything hesays, Martin O’Neill knew what he was lettinghimself in for.

Thomas Cahill, SwordsHe’s experienced and dedicated - he’s not a liability,

no, but he needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.

William Bolger, SwordsNo, he voices his own opinion. He is just a personthat speaks out when the rest of them don’t, but itwon’t interfere with the team - even the managerhas backed him.

Frank Collins, DonaghmedeNo I wouldn’t think so, with the experience that hehas, I think he’s an asset. I know he’s had a lot ofissues as well, but for the football, I think he’sgood for it.

The eventwas held in the Crowne Plaza DublinNorthwood. This was the twelfth Annual Fingal BusinessExcellence Awards and these awards are ahallmark of excellence for all businesses in thearea. The Chamber Awards recognise andcongratulate the business leaders who driveinnovative business processes, product devel-opment, enterprise, sustainability and overallbusiness success across all sectors.Guests included County Mayor, Cllr MagsMurray, Minister James Reilly T.D., FingalCounty Council Chief Executive, Paul Reid,Director of Economic Development, EthnaFelten, Senator Darragh O’Brien, Cllr AnneDevitt, Chambers Ireland CEO, Ian Talbot,Representatives from the Arab Irish Chamber,South Dublin Chamber, Dun LaoghaireRathdown Chamber, ITLG and Ireland-Gatewayto Europe.Speaking on the night, Siobhan Kinsella,

President, Fingal Dublin Chamber said,“Tonight we celebrate both tenacity and excel-lence in our business community and Icongratulate each and every one of the compa-nies for their success in reaching the GalaAwards Presentation Evening. I know SpotCheck, our independent judges had huge chal-lenges this year as a result of the calibre of thesubmissions,” she said. There were 22 award winners in total on thenight, with Louise Phelan of PayPal, the recip-ient of the JC Savage Fingal Business Person ofthe Year Excellence Award 2014.Chamber Chief Executive, Tony Lambertcommented in his speech: “Tonight we hostanother great gathering of business peopleand their staff for what continues to be thelargest business event the Chamber organiseseach year. Over the past few years, the busi-nesses in Fingal have been working hard tokeep themselves afloat and I think the hardwork is finally beginning to pay off. There isgrowth in the local economy again and themessage is we have survived and the only wayis up,” he said.

Local councillor, Paul Mulville (NP), has expressedhis concerns over pedestrian safety in Donabate, particularly around the traffic on Turvey Avenue. Atthe recent Council meeting held last week, he askedthe Chief Executive to give consideration to theprovision of a pedestrian crossing and followed upon the progress of a potential footpath on TurveyAvenue. Given the speed of traffic on Turvey Avenue, the councillor felt it important for pedestrians tohave the facility to cross from the railway station

side of the road, to Donabate Square, safely.Unfortunately, in their response, the Council said a2014 application to facilitate this crossing wasunsuccessful. “Funding was not granted but Fingalwill be reapplying for funding for this scheme againfor 2015,” the Council confirmed. The matter of afootpath on Turvey Avenue was previously raised inthe July Area Committee. The plans would allow forbetter and safe pedestrian access for residents ofBeverton estate to Donabate village and the railwaystation. The Council noted a source of funding wasyet to be identified for the project, and the landacquisition issues are yet to be resolved. However, they concluded: “It is hoped to progress land acqui-sition discussions in the coming weeks.”

The County Councilhave decided a place-ment of a tourist officeat Martello Tower,Skerries would beunsuitable due to thelack of facilities andfootfall in the area. Theannouncement came inresponse to a questionfrom J.P. Browne (FG), atthe latest Council meeting, whoasked for an update on the feasi-bility study of the project fromthe July meeting. The Council explained that theydid consider the presence ofservices at the location anddecided the main footfall oftourists to Skerries is locatedwell away at Skerries Mills - aserious limitation to proceeding

with a Tourist Office. On the matter ofMartello Tower’s condi-tion, the Councilobserved the overalltower is quite stable, although parts are invery poor structuralcondition. “In particularany future re-use willrequire an intervention

to secure the upper floor whichis exposed toweather and waterdamage.” “To further explorewhat type of inter-vention is required,we would first need ameasured survey toarrive at quantities, and a view of

required minimal supports tosecure the structure, along withestimates of the overall cost,”the Council said.“No provisions are yet made invarious budgets and it is esti-mated that this would be asignificant outlay. A feasibilitystudy is being carried out on thetower, to identify the costs ofrestoring the tower and it’spotential uses” the Councilcontinued. “It is hoped tocomplete this study in early 2015and a report will be brought tothe Balbriggan/Swords AreaCommittee,” they concluded.

1. There is an old wives talesthat actually suggests thatbread baked on ChristmasEve is mould resistant.

3 One notable medieval EnglishChristmas celebration featured agiant 165-pound pie; it was ninefeet in diameter. Its ingredientsincluded 2 bushels of flour, 20pounds of butter, 4 geese, 4rabbits, 4 wild ducks, 2 wood-cocks, 6 snipes, 4 partridges, 2neat tongues, 2 curlews, 6 pigeons and 7 blackbirds.

4 According to a 1995survey, 7 out of 10British dogs getChristmas gifts fromtheir doting owner.

5 The tradition of giving giftscomes from the AncientRomans, who exchangedgifts on New Year’s Day.

6 Alabama was the firstAmerican state to recogniseChristmas as an official holiday. The tradition began in 1836.

7 Bing Crosby’s “WhiteChristmas”, released in1942, is the best-sellingChristmas song of all time.

8 Long before it was a “kissencourager” during theChristmas season, mistletoeshad long been considered tohave magic powers by Celticand Teutonic people. It wassaid to have the ability to healwounds and increase fertility.

10 Every year, about 20,000“Rent-A-Santas” areemployed for the holidayseason and must masterlessons such as, how tomaintain a jolly attitudeunder pressure andavoiding garlic, onions, andbeans for lunch.

9 Bolivians celebrateMisa del Gallo or“Mass of the Rooster”on Christmas Eve.Some people bringroosters to themidnight mass, agesture that symbol-ises the belief that arooster was the first animal to announce thebirth of Jesus.

2 If you are an avid Christmasshopper, statistics have concludedthat you will be elbowed at leastthree times while shopping.

Continued from page 1roll this out later in the year and inthe meantime, the units in Swordswill be cleaned up as muchas possible.Butler continued, “It wouldbe great to see them turnedinto something moremodern and more useful.Free WiFi would be great forthe Main Street and town. With the renewed concen-tration on Swords Castleand the proposed cultural quarterof Swords, I would love to seesome sort of tourism element builtinto the double unit outside theCouncil office, and in front of the

Castle. An on-screen tourisminformation terminal would begreat, or even something people

could stand around andchat, whilst they chargetheir phone for free, modernuses like that would begreat. “Free WiFi and moremodern technological usesreplacing these old dilapi-dated units, will give theMain Street a real boost, especially with more busi-

nesses starting to come back toSwords Main Street. Tying thisinto the rejuvenation of SwordsCastle, could be an extra elementto this,” he concluded.

Nursing Home CrisisIn North CountyThere has been a major increase in thenumber of older people on Fair Dealwaiting lists for a nursing home placing, under the scheme in the North County. This is according to a local senator, whoclaims the number of older peoplewaiting has jumped from 57 to 224, anincrease of over 290 per cent in the 12months to September 2014 over all ofthe whole country. The Dáil will vote ona Fianna Fáil motion this week on theGovernment’’s handling of the Fair Dealcrisis. In the past year, there’s been afourfold increase in the total number ofolder people waiting for a nursing homebed under the scheme. Senator DarraghO’Brien (FF) told the County Leader :“We now have more than 2,000 olderpeople languishing on the Fair Dealwaiting lists for a place in a nursinghome under the scheme, 224 of whichare waiting in North County Dublinalone. It is outrageous that theGovernment has let this crisis get thisfar. These are elderly people who need

care and support. The last thing thatshould be expected of them, is to jumpthrough hoops because of governmentincompetence. “The Dáil will debate andvote on a Fianna Fáil motion. Our posi-tion is simple. Funding diverted awayfrom the Fair Deal scheme must berestored. A total of €23m was redirectedfrom the Fair Deal programme to pay forother packages, leaving a substantialfunding gap. This is causing unneces-sary stress and anxiety for older peopleand their families in the North Countyand across the country. It also puts ahuge financial burden on relatives ofolder people,” he said. “The 2015 HSENational Service Plan is being drafted atthe moment. It is crucial that this planreverses the reduction in support for theFair Deal implemented in 2014, and thatlong-term residential care is adequatelyresourced to take account of demo-graphic changes. This requires acomprehensive strategy from theGovernment, instead of allowing thou-sands of older people to wait for monthson end before receiving the care anddignity they deserve,” he concluded.

ments, and children filled their boots or stock-ings for him.

Christmas

9 Due to internationaltimes zones, our modernSanta actually has 31hours to deliver presentsto all the children of theworld. He would need totravel between houses in2/10.000 seconds, whichmeans he would need to accelerate 12.11 millionmiles per second on each stop. The force of hisacceleration would reduce him to ‘chunky salsa’.

It’s important that whenwe do retreat to ourhomes this winter, theyare as cosy, energy effi-cient and safe aspossible - ready toprotect us from theextreme winter weather.Remembering to turn offelectric fires or blanketsand distinguish candlesor open flames couldsave your life or homethis winter, but there afew more things you

should check beforewinter hits, and it’s toolate.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are probablyone of the easiest roomsto make a big improve-ment on without greatcost. Newly paintedwalls will dramaticallylift the mood of theroom, but re-groutingand replacing taps and

plugs also make a bigdifference and aregenerally pretty easy todo. Larger projects suchas replacing floors, tileand showers will needprofessional help andwill be more costly, butthere are plenty ofspecialist in the NorthCounty who providereasonably pricedservices to help youmake the most of yourbathroom this winter.

Declutter

The phrase may be‘Spring Clean’, butwinter is actually theperfect time to getorganised. Once Springhits, you’ll want tospend your timeoutdoors enjoying theimproved weather, notsifting through piles ofclutter. It’s important tobe ready for Christmastoo, especially if youhave children. Inevitably, toys and games will begained over the holi-days, so clearing out ordonating unwanted orunused toys in the buildup to Christmas will giveyou extra room once ithits. Devote a little timeeach week to tacklingone area of a room andwork until you’ve got itexactly how you want it.Don’t attempt to tacklethe whole house atonce, take small stepsand you’ll be able to seethe improvementsyou’re making in notime.

Insulation

This may not be the mostexciting of homeimprovements, but isessential to decreasingyour energy bills andmaking your home morecomfortable in the winterweather. Check theamount of insulation youhave in your attic - asheat rises, adding addi-tional insulation therecould save you quite abit. Be sure to check yourbasement too, to preventadditional heat loss thereas well.

Job CreationRemains A PriorityLocal TD, Alan Farrell (FG) has said that the live registerfigures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO)recently, show that the country’s economic recovery isfirmly on track. “The unemployment rate now stands at 11 per cent incomparison to this time last year when it was 12.4 percent,” he explained to the CountyLeader. “The seasonally adjustedfigures from the CSO removed3,500 people from the live registerin the month of October, bringingthe unemployment level downfrom 11.1 per cent in September to11 per cent now, the lowest ratesince 2009.” “As the unemployment level continues to drop, consumer confidence increases and the business envi-ronment improves, the opportunities for people toreturn to work will continue to grow, which will be posi-tive news for many people throughout the North Countywho are eager to return to work,” Farrell continued. “While we still have a long way to go to ensure theimpact of the economic recovery is felt in every home inthe North County, and throughout the country, the factthat the live register and unemployment figures arereducing consistently makes it clear that we are movingin the right direction.” “However, far too many peoplearound the locality and beyond are still out of work andare still struggling to get by. We must continue to focuson supporting indigenous businesses, and creatingnew jobs to get people back to work,” he concluded.

Airport PensionSaga Heats UpMembers of the joint AerLingus/Dublin AirportAuthority pensionscheme, includingpensioners, will have theirpension benefits cut from1st January as part of measures to address a €750mdeficit in the scheme. However, SIPTU is to set hold a crucial meeting withDAA management, ahead of a crucial staff ballot onpension proposals at the company. Up to now, theunion has refused to recommend a yes vote toworkers on a proposal that will see their pensionscut, and replaced by a defined contribution scheme.Plans are to freeze the joint DAA/Aer Lingus pensionfund, and time is running out, as the existing IASSdefined benefit scheme will be frozen on 31December.A key stumbling block is that Aer Lingus workers willreceive lump sums into their new pension funds thatare double the amount to be received by equivalentDAA workers. This, along with the failure to reachagreement with airport police and airport fireservice, is threatening to scupper any deal. However,DAA emphasises that the proposals from the twocompanies for future pension arrangements aredifferent, and reflect different business priorities.Aer Lingus have already voted to accept the LabourCourt proposals for their portion of the samepension fund, and will hold an EGM on 10thDecember at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dublin Airportto seek the approval of it’s shareholders for theproposed solution to address the deficit in thepension scheme. Both the Government and Ryanair,as shareholders are entitled to vote. In the mean-time, legal threats from both pensioners anddeferred pensioners may hold up the December 31stdeadline. Under the proposals, all retirees from AerLingus, the DAA and the SAA will see their pensionscut by up to 20 per cent, in line with legislation intro-duced last year. A spokesperson for the deferredmembers said they believed their pensions would becut by an average of 50 per cent, compared to whatthey were expecting from the scheme. Neither theynor retirees were included in negotiations onaddressing the deficit, as they were not workers.

Ryanair SoaringRyanair will hold an extraordinary generalmeeting on Friday, 28t November. Earlier thismonth, the airline reported that it’s net profit forthe first half of the year was up by 32 per cent, to€795 million. The company has confirmed that ithas signed a new agreement for 200 new Boeingaircraft, subject to approval at the EGM.

• Chimney Sweepingas per government warning - as seen on TV

• Gutter Cleaning• Garden Maintenance

Gutters

A clogged gutter cancause a variety of prob-lems - dirt and driedleaves not only cause aweight issue, but makegutters less effectivewhen clearing rain-water. Clean out yourguttering regularly, andif the downpipes lead toan outdoor drain, besure to clear this ofdebris too so it doesn’toverflow and flood thepath.

Fireplace & Chimney

We all love snugglingup by the fire, espe-cially when it’s horribleoutside, but don’t waitto prepare your fireuntil it’s so cold you’reready to light it. Stockup on wood andkindling and check thechimney for build up,nests or cracks with atorch. Make any neces-sary repairs to crum-bling mortar or bricks, and clean away ash andsoot build up -remember to get yourchimney cleaned

professionally at leastevery other year. Askthe chimney cleaner tocheck the damper tomake sure it can beclosed tightly to preventdrafts. These steps may betedious, but they’llprevent a chimney cata-strophe, and you’ll beroasting chestnuts in notime.

Boiler

Keeping your boiler wellmaintained is the onlyway to ensure youaren’t left without water

or heat during the coldwinter weather.Regular boiler mainte-nance and annualservicing will makesure your boiler isrunning with top effi-ciency and won’t packin on you when youneed it most. Fit acarbon monoxidedetector so you know ifyou have a leak, andcheck the amount of oilyou have left in yourtank. Fill the tank at theend of summer, or assoon as you can if youhaven’t already, so youdon’t run out in the

middle of winter. Cleanout water scale fromyour tank too, andmake sure the outsideflues are clear.

Radiators

Many of us rely uponradiators to keep us, andour home, warm duringthe colder months, butradiators that haven’tbeen used for a whileoften struggle withuneven heat or don’theat rooms at all. Bleedyour radiators now, before you need them,to get rid of any trappedair and increase heatefficiency when you turnthem on.

Windows & Doors

If your windows are olderthan 15 years old it isprobably time to replace

them or at least checkthat they are workingcorrectly. If yourwindows are singlepane, let considerablenoise and draft in, or leakwater, it is time toconsider replacing them.

P.J. Cunningham’s latest book is acollection of 19 short storiescentred around the tales of oneboy, his family and his experi-ences growing up in Ireland. Abook of what-ifs and lessonslearned; the tales arepersonal accounts andstories recounted tohim. But throughout itall, is an education, especially to a townieEnglish reader likemyself, on Ireland, itshistory, and its land. Cunningham sparksinterest, with justenough detail for thereader to follow, but nottoo much to overwhelm. No firstor second names are used, simplyfamily names or job titles, reflecting the simplicity of life andan emphasis on the story, ratherthan the people themselves. That’s not to say the people aren’timportant - at the core of thisbook are the views and goals of anation during a difficult period inIrish history. Tales of Black andTans are retold, views on the

church tackled, and the constantstruggles faced by those familiesliving off the land are brought tolife. Cunningham successfullyintertwines poignant stories with

the necessary technicalterms in a way that isneither patronising nordull. “Sods”, “pulling thewool” and “turning theswathes” are no longeralien, yet it wasn’t a choreto read about them. It is no surprise to me thatthis unassuming littlebook was shortlisted inthe 2014 Irish BookAwards - I couldn’t put it

down. It may be a book I wouldnot necessarily have chosen toread, but it moved and engagedme more than any of my latestchosen forays into the literaryworld. It is modest and simple, but it is neither quaint nor twee; itis endearing beyond belief andsuccessfully tackles a variety ofissues in both the past andpresent through the eyes of boyand his family.

Smith Wants Swords ResidentsTo Have Say On SwiftwayLocal councillor, DuncanSmith (Lab), is calling onSwords residents to havetheir say on the proposedSwiftway Bus RapidTransit route which iscurrently on publicdisplay. Smith told theCounty Leader: “I amcalling on residents inSwords, particularly thoseliving in estates off theGlen Ellan Road, likemyself, and those living inestates adjacent to theSwords dual carriageway,to have a look at the BusRapid Transit proposals, which currently are on

display in the CountyCouncil offices or on theSwiftway website.” “Thisproposal, if it goes aheadwill have a massiveimpact onSwords and willalter the trans-portation systemand the layout ofour dualcarriageway andadjoining roadsand estates. Forexample; the currentproposal would see awidening of the Glen EllanRoad encroaching onsome estates, TheBalheary Park would beinfringed by the new roadlayout and the skateparkwould have to be relo-cated, all roundabouts onthe Swords dualcarriageway would beremoved and replacedwith signalised junctions, pedestrian accesseswould be opened toestates adjacent to the

dual carriageway, thePavilions roundaboutwould become a four roadjunction with the FeltrimRd exit onto the dual

c a r r i a g e w a ybeing totallyaltered,” heexplained. “Thisis a big proposaland it is vital weall have our sayon the route. Inmy canvassing in

recent weeks it hasbecome very noticeablethat awareness of theproposal is still very low. Iam very concerned by thislevel of awareness, as ifthe proposal goes ahead,it will have a major impacton our town. We need tohave our say! Please takea couple of minutes toview the proposals on andsend your thoughts to theNational TransportAuthority The closing dateis 28 November 2014,”Smith concluded.
